Yes he was. He considered himself a "true" christian, put out death sentenses on oposing religions/ideologies and generaly tought that he was doing gods will.
He brought back theology what he saw as an increaincreasingly "Atheist" and non-christian nation, and part of that plan was to play on his contrymen hatred against the jews.
He was generaly kind to animals and children also.
He almost succeded in slaughtering a whole nation, and belived he himself would go to heven for it.
Just because he has been demonized does not meen he himself or his allies tought that of him in his time.
And hey, he was not the only one.
Just look at how the catholic church has slaughtered many "heathens" throughout the ages "all in the name of god".
Just look at how many muslims slaughter each other/there "enemies" all in the name of Allah.
Just look at how many Jews have slaughtered christians/muslims troughout the ages "all in the name of god".
Th blood of our ancestors is still fresh on our hands, one dictator demonized or not.

What's yer faovrite album? =^_^=

ELP is far from the only band to question blind faith.
Just look at Tool and it's lyrics to the song opiate and Sober, plus their obvius dislike of martyrs.
Pink Floyd's Roger Waters is a known atheist too, altough he choose not to dwell on it in his lyrics.
His distain for religion clearly shows tough on the album Animals, and later in his solo caree.
I also think that many people mistake Genesis for a pro-christian band.
True, they use religius imagery in songs as supper's redy, but it is my opinion that it is a parody on "our" religious values and the good and bad/black and white view on reality, going on in their Monty Python-esque parody about that "he has fooled you all" ,that god and satan are realy the same thing, and that the trumpets on the judgment day will sound Rock and Roll "the devils music".
In the end, alltough we know better, we will rather walk blindly intto the "new Jerusalem" than face reality.

Well, anyways, that's my tvo cents.
Don't take them too easily tough, 'cause I'm a bloody "devil worshiping, misguided Atheist"

Greg Lake professes to be a Christian and I believe that this was the case when he was with ELP. So the lyric is less a profession of the writer/singer but just a point of view or perhaps a man struggling with faith in the scientific age.  (or Perhaps even just relating to his audience.)

265 posts...5 accurate? This thread is really far-flung of the main subject.

Religion, sex, politics and “sports” are extremely issues…  Be watchful when you speak.

I’m not upset, simply I dislike religious blabbing. I prefer to keep my religion with my private feelings.

Be religious people doesn’t assure be intellectual people.

A person who lives for religion, usually creates a freak world about the matter, and got mad when somebody dislikes "untouchable believes". Fanatic religious are crazy mofos to me. Ask Al Queda about it…

A proud TOOL fan.

I believe you are what you are.No amount of going to Church and praying will make a blind bit of difference. If you are a fool you remain a fool.I also believe that people know this but choose to ignore it.Truth hurts.''Man is man made'' but we'd rather blame others for our stupidity.hence why the world is such a mess.Lets bomb Iraq and make the world right.Such blatant stupidity gets applauded and ultimately will send us to oblivion (unless Global Warming gets us first). There are religious fanatics and then there are religious fanatics .Al Quaeda and George W Bush. The world ends.

OK, I read the first page, and a bit of the second, and I can see from the last page that stuff has deteriorated somewhat!

I haven't read the intervening pages, but didn't Pete Sinfield write the lyrics for ELP. I know Greg had a choice in singing them, but I don't think he originated them (probably - PS: 'hey, wow, like I've got some words for you' GL:'thanks, what are they about' PS:'Like, does it matter' GL:'I guess not')

I agree with Maani and the others, I'm another Christian and prog lover. Indeed I was in the Christian band Paley's Watch (that's me with the long hair, now a grade 3 all over!).

I do think a line has to be drawn at times, for instance I would steer away from things like Darryl Way's Wolf's 'Night Music' cut, since it is openly satanic. Many prog bands are basically undecided and tend towards saying just anything that they think sounds cool and fits the story of the toon (cf 'And the nurse will tell you lies, of a kingdom beyond the skies'). This doesn't necessarily reflect their true belief, but it may be hinted at from the lyric.

At the end of the day, it is the Lord alone who knows the content of a man's heart, and we can espouse all we like about what aonther is thinking, but we will never be fully correct. Also we all make our own choices about what we listen to say, what we listen to, and whether or not these things will please the Lord. One of the best deciders is the old line of 'If Jesus was standing next to me, would I still do/say/listen to this?'

The forum is childish, rude and often obscene. I was genuinely shocked when I first discovered it (I had thought that the prog listeners were mostly rational intellectuals). The messages the people write and the language they use do not leave the room for a self-respected person to be here any more.

Arteum - I am a Christian (with beliefs almost exactly like those of Maani) yet with these points you make, I AGREE with you.  I too am not in favor of bands such as Radiohead and Primus being on this site as well as the the rapid growth of "post-rock" and new-age electronic bands being added at an alarming rate.

I won't go so far as to say that the forums are childish, but they do seem to be repetitive at times. How many posts about "who is the best guitar player", "what is the best keyboard solo", "name your favorite epic song", etc. do we need?

As for you leaving, I am not surprised. Maani whooped your butt. I think you are just as misguided, brainwashed and "lost" as you claim Christians to be, however, I wouldn't leave this site if it was made up of 90% atheists. If you love prog and 90% of this site (I think a correct percentage would probably be less that 33%) are Christians that love prog and you believe prog lovers to be intellectual then what does that tell you about Christians?

Logic my friend?

Best of 2006 that I've heard:
PFM-Stati Di Immaginazione
Zenit-Surrender (Best "unknown" album)
Oaksenham - Conquest of Pacific
2007:
Phideaux - Doomsday Afternoon
La Torre Del Alchimista - Neo

The biggest error of Arteum is, in my opinion, that he automatically equates "believing in God" with "being of the Christian faith". What he attacks is the Christian faith. He has a point in saying that Christian faith doesn't exactly follow the laws of logic, but that's not what Christian faith is about. "Credo, quia absurdum" ("I believe, though it is absurd") is a central saying of the Christian religion. Attacking the Christian faith with logic may be tempting, but I don't see the point of it. Anyway, the conclusion he draws from it, that believers in the Christian faith must be idiots, is wide off the mark. Many of the world's leading scientists are of the Christian faith, as well as political leaders (ok, the last one is not exactly proof; aren't all political leaders idiots? ) People of Christian faith can be found anywhere, even among communists. They can be found on all kinds of intellectual levels, and the same is true for atheists.

This is a Prog Music Lounge...

Please,  "MODERATOR"  shutdown this...

Grow up!!!

If you cant read a passionate discussion without getting all flustered then you really need to ask if forum life is for you.

Ignore the thread if it upsets you.........

You grow up… and behave..! This is a public forum. Go church to talk about religion… Nobody needs preaching here… or a passionate gobbledygook discussion...

The question is: Is ELP against Christianity? –> Possible answers:
  • a) Yes… why?
  • b) No… why?
  • c) Maybe.. why?
  • d) Who cares?

Dig me...But don't...Bury me

How on earth did you arrive at that  conclusion? Not only can "Art" not handle some humor when the tables have been turned, he himself is guilty of having dealt some insults, whether subtle or overt. Maybe you should reread his posts.

Exactly what I was going to say.
