I was kind of surprised that no Roger Dean covers made the list, not because I think they are bad, but because of the provocative nature of the list. Then Mickey said the person who made list knew their stuff and it struck me: they knew where to draw the line between raising the ire of hard core prog fans and making a list that would cause bomb threats at Onion Central.

The Nursery Cryme album artwork is horrible. Looks really poor. |
It's miles ahead of the Miami Vice-style 'A Show Of Hands' cover Syme designed for Rush in the late 80's.

Wow, Ivan, that's really terrible. I'm surprised the label didn't stop them. |
As a fact, they managed to control the band apparently. As far as I know, they wanted to recreate the joke completely, but the label said no way José, so they reached an agreement to this cover that makes no sense at all.
Something similar happened with Aphrodite’s Child, they wanted an album in red with big 666 on numbers, plus a joke saying “This album was conceived under the influence of Sahlep”.
Of course the label opposed, radical groups made a scandal, but the guys insisted, so their record was in the freezer for almost two years, until Vertigo dared to release it with everything Aphrodite’s Child insisted, but the band didn’t existed anymore, they had split long before.
People thought Sahlep was a Greek demon but at the end it was only a non alcoholic beverage from Turkey (Well at least here in Perú they do Sahlep with a bit of alcohol, almost as Irish Coffee).

Yes, the I Dik Dik Suite... and PFM Chocolate Kings covers, those are really horrible prog covers. Both great albums, by the way.
Just adding nothing to the discussion, just wanted to say that I love the Tarkus cover, and even the Yes' Hipgnosis covers. And all Paul Whitehead covers are wonderful.
As I said, nothing that is of any help for the discussion, just expressing my tastes.

I always thought the two men on the cover of Rush's Hemispheres were supposed to represent the Apollo and Dionysus that the title track is about. But perhaps I give the cover too much credit . . .

Yeah...a lot of the covers from the 70s I don't "get."
Now you might have cheesy metal album covers, but at least you don't have revolting weirdness like Birth Control albums or Le Orme's Collage.

The album by Camel is a new version of an old and bad taste joke, it's said tghat Jesus in the Cross called Peter (who wasn't really at the cruxifiction place but the joke goes like this) and Peter answers "Yes Master", Jesus calls him again and asks him to climb the ladder to the Cross. Peter goes and Jesus tells him in he ear "I can see your house from here".
That's why the album got a lot of bad reactions in their day, thre joke is not only disrespectful, but also a bad one.
