Conclave - Not the type of film we normally watch but this one turned out to be quite good. After the death of the Pope all the Cardinals meet up to select a new one - hence the movie's title. A great cast and a good story made the 2 hours fly by. It's full of twists and turns with an ending that no one could ever foresee and a real jaw-dropping moment. 8/10

Movies watched over the festive season:
Heretic - A horror movie with Hugh Grant. A great start but went downhill a bit later on. 2 young religious girls get trapped by an anti-religious nutter in his house during a storm. Worth a watch though 7/10 Little Bone Lodge - 2 criminals seek refuge at a remote Scottish property where a mother and her daughter live with the disabled husband. It heads in a totally unexpected direction and the twist is a good one. Nicely acted and some decent jumps near the end. Recommended 8/10 Gladiator II - I wasn't overly fond of the original despite it's positive reviews. This one isn't great tbh. The action scenes are decent but it's way, way too long and the story is quite weak (I could never watch something this long and drab in a cinema). The 2 Emperors were the best thing in it. 4/10

A Quiet Place Day One 2024
This is the third in the franchise and does not feature either John Krasinski or Emily Blunt (although Krasinski co-wrote the screenplay) who appear in the other 2. This does exactly what it says on the tin. One moment all is normal in NYC, next it's complete carnage but because, perhaps, they don't have a big Hollywood budget for a load of CGI, instead it centres on one or 2 characters a la The Walking Dead. It's very good with faces I'm not familiar with plus a very clever cat! 7/10

Finished The Penguin, excellent!! 9/10
Carry On (Netflix) surprisingly very good. 8/10 Children's Train (Netflix), got better as it progressed, enjoyable. Kids aside the acting was just ok. 7/10 |

A Complete Unknown looks like it may be the film of the year, Tim Chalamet is impressive.

The Northman 2022
Interesting attempt to strip back the whole Viking saga thing, moving it away from perhaps the over romanticised and popular TV series Vikings and The Last Kingdom. I could easily have hated this but I didn't and was never bored for its 2 hour duration. Alexander Skaarsgard is as good as ever in the main title role and is well supported by Nicole Kidman and Anya Taylor-Joy. 7/10

We've just watched Red One and it's a blast. Cast and acting are great and it's made with heart if you get what I mean. Dear Santa, with Jack Black, had no heart and was a tick-in-the-box movie. Red One, on the other hand, is full of charm and it's great fun. I don't think I've ever seen a bad film with The Rock in it and he does his normal thing here - Chris Evans is great too. I'll give it 8/10

Venom: The Last Dance None of these Venom movies have really struck me in any way. They should be fun but I find them rather dull. Tom Hardy is so miscast too - it always seems like he doesn't want to be there - pays the mortgage I suppose. Typical Marvel these days which frankly it's all been done, and seen, before. 5/10

Finished The Penguin last night and an excellent show it was too. Both Colin Farrell and Cristin Milioti deserve Oscars (as do the make-up artists). A rather nasty ending though which brought everything back to what we really expect of The Penguin. 9/10

^ I've been watching the German series Luna & Sophie which reminds me of the Shetland season 9 cast.
Also Little Women from 2019-- never a big fan of the story but this version is quite enjoyable, and just finished the four-part Howards End from 2017 which was very good. |

^ A poorly executed concept involving Jack Black? Please say it's not so
![]() weather has also been terrible here in North Cornwall and we even lost the internet for 10 hrs because of Storm Darragh. Thankfully my Mum has old fashioned TV where you can actually record stuff so I was able to watch the latest episode of Shetland. That show is so good and I'm glad has survived Douglas Henshall leaving it (replaced by the excellent Ashley Jenson (Extras))

Because of the awful weather here yesterday we stayed home and watched a movie in the afternoon. Dear Santa with Jack Black. An 11 year kid writes a letter to Santa but as he's dyslexic he writes "Dear Satan" by mistake. Along comes Jack Black as Satan hamming it up as he always does. The premise is a good one and had potential, but was just poorly executed and a missed opportunity. Anyway it killed some time on a dreary day. 5/10

Hi,
Just saw ... Carlos Saura == FLAMENCO ... not sure a lot of folks here will stick with Carlos Saura, who also did a similar film TANGO ... and so many others that are dancing minded that we can not figure out much about it ... his CARMEN is fantastic, and it is a story kinda changed into the new dancers against the older dancers. KUBRICK ON KUBRICK == A very odd ball thing on my part, but since I did many others with similar moments (Godard, Truffaut, Gilliam ... and others) ... I thought I should watch this one ... it doesn't make you want to see/appreciate more Kubrick, but it might add to its lively atmosphere as some of the actors talk about it, or there is a comment from the narration. It is good, but I don't think it does one thing that is usually exceptional in some of Kubrick's films ... how some actors just about run away with the whole thing and make it a special film. Peter Sellers, Malcom McDowell and Jack Nicholson, were by far all over the place, and the films did not suffer one bit by it ... in fact, without it, they would likely be very boring! ANG LEE == SENSE AND SENSIBILITY ... I have, so far, not been able to write, or bother with a review of this film ... not sure why, but it sticks with me as a reminder of the advanced actors in advanced acting classes posturing and posing, and making sure they can deliver the line without tripping over their feet, or mouths! There is some good acting here, but all in all, I think the director did not know how to handle actors that had the ability ... and likely did whatever they wanted ... makes one wonder if ANG LEE was prepared for this ... most of the actors he had worked with were not as well known and experienced as those here, and it looks like he got blown over!

Dune Part Two
I watched Part One again before going into Part Two. May have been a mistake as it was probably too much to take in. On the whole I felt there was way too much desert stuff just to get to the sandworm surfing. Timothee Chalamet's character is boring for me and I couldn't care less about his romance withn Zendeya's character. Could and should have been trimmed down by about half an hour but as always we have to have a more 'epic' follow up film, this seems to be the main curse of the modern franchise and where it all goes wrong for me. Shame. 8/10 for Part One but about 6/10 for Part Two. Can't see myself returning to it. and on a side note , Rebecca Ferguson is so much more interesting in Silo.

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes - How many is that now? Anyway, this one takes place generations after the death of Caesar and feels like it's building up to the 60s movie - maybe, who knows as that takes place thousands of years later. CGI, animation and cinematography were brilliant and I only spotted issues a couple of times - so top marks there. The story was a bit dull though and yet again we get a movie that is stretched out way too long than what's needed to tell this story. Of course the gorillas are the bad guys, the orangutangs the saints - the rest are a mix of good (they look nice) and the bad (they look like orcs). I'd say this is the weakest of the franchise so far and I'm sure there will be more to come. In saying that I did quite enjoy it and the end is thrilling - 7/10

I liked it, it was an improvement on the first one. The lead character was better developed.

Smile 2 - Let's face it, modern day horror movies are mostly crap. This one started really well then dragged in the middle and ended in a very strange way. The lead actress was excellent but it needed a lot more than that to make this any good. A shame as it started with much promise. Two hours was way too long as well 5/10

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice - I was really looking forward to this sequel to the cult-classic original. Well, in parts, it was great and all the ingredients were there but overall it just felt a little flat. Winona Ryder has always annoyed me a bit and she has a lot of the screen time. Thankfully Michael Keaton reprises the role like it was just yesterday, but stealing the show for me was Justin Theroux as the slimy boss/boyfriend. Jenna Ortega and Willem Dafoe were both at their best too. This movie was probably not needed except to cash in on the original and the script was mediocre at best. Still, it was nice to have a blast from the past - 6.5/10
