There must be an equation to derive a tracks comparability with other tracks....if maths can put a man on the moon then surely even some of the extreme nuttery of this site can be rationalized...

For me, Tarkus, is ELP's magnus opus. I like it far more than Karn Evil 9.

Genesis - Firth of Fifth
I really want to get into Genesis more though, but everything else I heard yet wasn't as perfect as this one. I will probably get out now... ...or by Friday

Not songs, but Thirty Seconds to Mars' self-titled debut album is unbelievably superior to any of their other albums.

I agree with you up to a point i.e. If we don't ever listen to the 'other' songs' it might imply that we either don't ascribe them any value or haven't even heard them.

As an ELP fan I might have to accept Tarkus as an entry for this thread. Of course I love a lot of their stuff but this track (especially the live version) is something very special. I doubt I would be a fan but for it. Big Big Train - Judas Unrepentant . Not a bad choice here . I saw them live recently and this track was by a massive margin the highlight especially with the audience participation. But again I love a lot of their music. btw people are missing the point of this thread. Its a question of whether there is one track that is clearly above all else. Doesn't mean that everything else is not good as its being taken by some!

I chose "Court" primarily for the vast instrumentation (use of Harpsichord, Mellotron, organ, flute, etc), the sheer beauty of the melody and rock "orchestration" of it, and the absolutely wonderful vocal work of Lake. Schizoid is a close second for me. Starless, meh. Honestly I am more a fan of Crimson's first four albums. After that point their music stopped really fitting my tastes. |

I was really worried until I saw that. ![]() (Why do people keep picking "Court" as the best KC song? It was my first by them and it's really good, but Schizoid Man and Starless are far better imho.) |

about time Hercules said something that makes some sense... though he is ignoring the Wart's contribution to K.C. but his point is taken. K.C.'s fame really does rest upon one song and that one only.

Can't really thing of one among prog artists.
But I will offer one with a prog angle to it. Elton John: Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding Great song. And the only one in his catalog I like. It's probably no coincidence it's his proggiest.
