Topic: Deserted Island Posted: April 18 2008 at 13:29 |
You all know the drill, you unexplainably end up on a deserted island with 5 CD's in hand and a pizza with your choice of toppings. So which do you have?
1. Genesis - The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway (The different assortments of music and the length make this on key in my 5) 2. Area - Arbeit Macht Frei (I can think of no better place i would like to listen to this album than all by myself on a windy island) 3. Focus - Hamburger Concerto (Simply one of my favourites) 4. Mike Oldfield - Ommadawn (Relaxing) 5. Van Der Graaf Generator - H To He Who Am The Only One (The theme of the album just seems fitting)
PIZZA - bacon, pepperoni, ham, sausage, cheese.

you placed this in the prog lounge, so I'll choose from that area of my collection:
1. Art Bears - The World as it is Today: i'd bring this as a function of it being my favourite album as I keep saying as often as possible in all tangentially relevant threads o:)
2. Area - Arbeit Macht Frei: how did you know?
3. Jannick Top - Soleil d'Ork: suits my occasional penchant for heavier music without being uselessly metallic (this could also be any '70s Magma or Weidorje album but "Jannick Top"'s another phrase I like to repeat.)
4. Radiohead - either Amnesiac, Kid A or Hail to the Thief: modern music to prevent me from the inevitable retreat into retrosolipsism.
5. Wha-ha-ha - Shinutokiwa Betsu: I'll need to laugh ;P
Pizza: Tuna! (*meow*)

Done before many times....
Still I'm in the mood, so here it is.
1. Yes -- Yessongs
2. Gustav Holst -- The Planets
3. John Coltrane -- A Love Supreme
4. Rick Wakeman -- Journey to the Center of the Earth
5. Frank Zappa -- Joe's Garage
And the pizza would be double pepperoni.
5.

Peter Hammill - The Fall of the House of Usher (1999 version) Mother Gong - Fairy Tales Nik Turner's Sphynx - Xitintoday Hawkwind - Warrior on the Edge of Time Amon Düül 2 - Tanz der Lemminge
Subject to change at any time though; other candidates would be:
Gong - You Embryo - Rocksession Guru Guru - Känguru Jon Anderson - Oliaz of Sunhillow Yes - Relayer Genesis - The Lamb lies Down on Broadway Can - Tago-Mago Tangerine Dream - Rubycon Klaus Schulze - Mirage Edgar Froese - Epsilon in Malaysian Pale Van der Graaf Generator - Pawn Hearts Dzyan - Electric Silence Ash Ra Tempel - Join Inn Popol Vuh - In den Gärten Pharaos Cosmic Jokers - Same Deep Freeze Mice - I Love you Little Bo-Bo With Your Delicate Golden Lions Gryphon - Red Queen to Gryphon Three
To name but a few. And don't get me started on live albums; I wouldn't know where to stop there at all (I definitely prefer live to studio).

Is it ok if I change the pizza and the CDs for a solar-powered stove and an acoustic guitar instead? Whatever CDs and pizza I choose now I will regret choosing later anyway.

Rush albums... five of them... ANY five.
But limiting to one per artist: 1. Rush - Different Stages (3 discs!). But Permanent Waves if only studio. 2. Dream Theater - Awake 3. Chris Squire - Fish Out Of Water 4. Porcupine Tree - Deadwing 5. Tool - Lateralus
Pizza? Spicy Pirogi (I don't know what's on it, but it's awesome!)

1. David Sylvian - Secrets of the Beehive 2. Talk Talk - Spirit of Eden 3. King Crimson - Islands 4. Tangerine Dream - Rubycon 5. Yes - Relayer

1. Magma - Live ; for my mandatory regulatory zeuhl fiesta 2. Pat Metheny - Speaking of Now ; for my mandatory nostalgic simmering/marinating 3. Captain Beefheart - Safe as Milk ; so that I can say "Why didn't I bring Trout Mask instead?!?" for eternity 4. Weidorje - Weidorje ; epic groovage is a requirement 5. Univers Zero - Heresie ; to lullaby me to peaceful slumber when I can't sleep
And the toppings on my pizza would be various zeuhl, RIO/avant, kraut and Canterbury albums. *graaa*

I hope my Island is next to Vom's since after swapping Crimson for Meddle, that would be a pretty damn near ideal list for me, however, in an attempt to be original:
1. Pink Floyd - Meddle
2. Tangerine Dream - Force Majeure
3. Savatage - Dead Winter Dead
4. Supertramp - Crime Of The Century
5. Sigor Rós - Ágætis Byrjun
Pizza - Calzone - with Steak, potato, onion and suede filling - and make the dough out of short-crust pastry instead of that tasteless cardboard pizza's are made from (pizza... what a dire piece of foodstuff - Italy has a great cuisine, but pizza...? No. Come on - the only people who ever finish a whole pizza would have eaten photograph of one smeared in ketchup and been just as happy). Pah!
...and I'll have it with chips and baked-beans, two sliced of bread and butter and a mug of hot tea with milk and sugar.

All right guys, lets say this desert island thing is for real. this is all you get to listen to, all of you wouldn't pick double or triple album complilations. Now don't get me wrong, I don't like complilations, but if I'm really leaving for a desert island I want as much music as possible.

^^^ Quantity or quality . I suppose you're right though. But none of us will ever know until we're stranded on a desert island saying "I'm so sick of these albums!"

Well, I would like to know why I'm going to a deserted island in the first place. I would never choose to go to one; no conceivable event would cause me to move to one, and if I'm forcibly being taken to one, I get the feeling that I won't have the option of picking music to listen to when I get there. I can't pick just 5, anyway, but here is what I'm thinking of right now:
The Mars Volta - Frances the Mute and De-Loused in the Comatorium
Between the Buried and Me - Colors
Dream Theater - Scenes from a Memory
Transatlantic - Bridge Across Forever
Pizza - Philly Cheesesteak pizza!
