If you don't like it become an MP and change it. Surely the chances of getting into Parliament as an independent is better now than it has ever been.

Tell me about it!
Try getting a half decent job in the UK when you're 51. It's minimum wage plus working tax credit - if you can find 30+ hours a week of course, or the Nat King Cole (dole). Sixty quid a week when you've worked all your life and paid God knows what in NI. Rant Rant Rant

True - there appears to be a perception that there is a difference between benefit fraud and creative accounting when they are the actually same thing - taking money that isn't yours. Edited by Dean - May 15 2009 at 14:58 |

The government do a reasonably good job of that - they are a realatively easy target. It's the rich who don't pay their full dues that we are crap at getting hold of ![]() |

At the same time as recovering money from the excesses of expenses for MPs all money should be recovered from benefit fraudsters. |

UK MPs get £64K a year ($98K) this is before you work out their various allowances, including £100K/year for "staff" (which generally means Mrs MP doing a bit of filing and MP jnr licking stamps), another £3K if they have to work in London (hmm, where are the Houses of Parliament again?) £22K incidental expense allowance, £5K IT equipment allowance, £24K additional costs allowance, £40K winding-up allowance (whatever the flump that is), £10.4K communications allowance and 40p/mile mileage allowance (lets assume 10,000 miles per annum or £4K) ... making a grand total of £272,400 (...about $400K - which I understand is roughly what the US gov pays Mr Obama)
... it must be bloody tough for them.
the average UK salary is £27K ($41K) ... of course that "average" is grossly skewed with the majority earning less than that.

Mr Chawner said: "What we get barely covers the bills and puts food on
the table. It's not our fault we can't work. We deserve more."
I'm almost beyond a rant; just speechless really at this attitude. If I were a British citizen I'd be foaming at the mouth. |

When I was a Civil Servant expenses claims were so heavily scrutinised you could get raked over the coals for being a few miles out in calculating mileage allowance. At one point it became so arduous making a claim that many of us couldn't be bothered with the hassle over a couple of measly pounds. These b
