npj,
I know what you mean, they do double the vocals over an instrument frequently. "Stardust We Are" comes to mind as a prime example, though there are certainly enough examples of the opposite as you long for. If you're interested, I'd recommend I am the Sun and Life Will Kill You as examples of the vocals taking a life of their own. I do think of the vocals as one of their weaker points, both tone of the singing and in the lyrical content, though even so, I'd give the tone an eight out of ten and the content a six, both above average. I disagree on the female singer part though unless you could find a breathy alto. I think based on the music, it would be easiest to put a clean soprano in there but I don't think it would improve the sound. Roj, Thanks, as I'm thinking about a review for Stardust We are, I'm realizing that I really associate The Flower Kings with becoming a Dad, I hadn't realized that they were such a personal band for me. |

In regard to melodies: What I actually mean is that strong melodies are supposed to sit on top of the accompaniment of the other instruments, often in counterpoint, practically having a life of their own. This happens very seldom with the FKs. The melodies (especially Stolt is the culprit here) just seem to go in unison with the chord structures or the guitar lead with hardly a variation, and don't have a life of their own. He mainly seems to sing along with his guitar lines, and I find that very 'empty' (and lazy) for want of better words. |

Nice review buddy
![]() npjnpj - no melodies in Flower Kings music?!? You've got to be joking. I sure hear plenty of fabulous melodies from TFK, do you want to borrow my ears?
And by the way I love the vocals of TFK, Stolt, Froberg and Gildenlow.

I'd like to enjoy flower kings music, but I can only manage that in small doses.
And I can tell you what disturbes me: It's the lack of melodies and the unremarkable singing, yes and I include the guest singers as well.
The playing, instrumentation, and production is brilliant, and I'd not change a thing there, but if you ask me, what the FKs need is a re-recording of the vocal tracks on ALL their albums, preferable sung by a female singer with strong melodies. Those songs would be ideal for vocal harmonies on well constructed chorus sections. Then I'd become a fanboy.

I try not to review the popular albums by the bands, but I might make some exceptions with TFK. I did give Adam & Eve 4 stars ![]() |

Hmm, your point is taken Roj, I may have to do a review or two. Maybe I'll try to write something up for Space Revolver at lunch. Guess what I'm listening to this morning.

Nice to hear everybody talking about my favourite album, Stardust We Are. Check my review of it
![]() I just love Just This Once, it's an amazing track and one of my very faves by TFK. The Merrygoround was also mentioned and that is right up there. It's my second favourite on the album (after SWA) and features my favourite ever Roine solo. Wonderful stuff.
I know the feeling Roland113 and Angel mention. The album (like most by this amazing band) just washes over you, and it's just an overall heavenly feeling, leaving you inspired, relaxed and with a completely positive vibe.
I can only agree that you hear new things each time you hear a TFK album. For instance on this classic album The Man Who Walked With Kings went (almost) unnoticed by me for a time, but is now one of my favourites on the album. It's brilliant!
I think we need a real concerted effort to review as many TFK albums as possible between us, and get those ratings up to the level where they deserve to be.

^ I sense a gauntlet being thrown here.
"Just this Once" is a fantastic tune, though I do cheat. I've forced iTunes and my MP3 player to skip the sirens in the very beginning. I had to actually listen to a few bars of "The End of Innocence" to figure out which song it was. I can't say that I have any great affinity for that one in particular, but as Nov said, every time you listen to one of their CD's you run the chance of picking up on a new gem that you hadn't noticed before. I think that their albums tend to run together in a good way, one track slides into the next into the next and so on until you find yourself at the end of the album with an over all serene sense of wonder knowing that you enjoyed the experience, but unable to remember the exact details. It's kind of like a drunken hook up. (without the unpleasant itching the next morning) |

^ah, fans of their 90's stuff, hmm, I still need to check Stardust and Flower Power, but I doubt they can overpass Space Revolver and Unfold The Future.
The one 90's Flower Kings album I do really enjoy in the heights of the mentioned before, is Roine's solo album, TFK, simple stunning. |

Just this once is, I think, my second favorite Flower Kings song. Right after Garden Of Dreams
![]() End of Innocence is definitely a "mood" track, as in, I have to be in the mood. But if I am, it is a good tune. On the other hand, The Merrygoround is a fantastic piece of music. Just love Salazar's drumming in the first half and Roine's solo in the second ![]() Now you guys have made me get out Stardust We Are. Thanks! ![]() |

Definitely ![]() I was listening to "The End Of Innocence" in the car today. What a glorious track, and one that hardly ever gets mentioned. I know that I'll be listening to The Flower Kings until the end of my days because it's possible to actually overlook a fabulous track such as this when it's on a double CD crammed with brilliance. Then one day, you're listening to it properly for the first time and it's like "Wow, how did I miss that one?" ![]() If anyone has overlooked "The End Of Innocence", go back and have another listen and see what I mean ![]() To quote you; "the Flower Kings are amazing" ![]() Edited by Nov - May 12 2009 at 17:38 |

Actually, I did review it quite a while ago. The problem is, I wasn't officially a member at the time, as at that time you had to put an email in a specific place on the control panel in order to have a link to your name and all your reviews (or something like that). I've actually been posting reviews here since 2005! If you search under infandous (but with no link), or infandous@exc .............. I think I changed emails in 2006 or so, so that didn't help either. Anyway, it's all sorted now, and I am resubmitting reviews that are under those other id's whenever I come across them (sometimes I rewrite them, but mostly I just resubmit them as is). I just resubmitted the Odyssey, so you should find mine there now. I gave it 4 stars. It's a brief review, but I don't think it's really feasible to do a song by song analysis on an album like that. Who would have the patience to read it? ![]() |

I frankly like most of their albums. I like every album I know, which is from Lex Rex on. I am still eager to get Chronometree and their live albums / dvds, but so far they are too expensive. Damn, Lex Rex and Shadowlands are masterpieces as well as disc 1 of Inconsolable Secret. That band is just so unappreciated . . .
About the Odyssey album, i discovered Glass Hammer in that album. I loved their song so much I bought Lex Rex, Shadowlands and Inconsolable Secret all together and i don't regret it a bit. Their last album is pretty good also, but they somehow lost the focus in some songs, so some tend to seem overlong. Still Culture Of Ascent is awesome.

Well, I have to be honest: I'm not on the forum EVERY day but I am here quite often. So I have a bit of a life I guess
![]() And about the reasons for promotion: I get this question often in pm's but I'm not sure if it's about topics or new bands suggestions (though these things are indeed apprciated). But the real reason they asked me was that I had posted over a hundred reviews in three months. I guess that impressed the team.
I was surprised though because I thought my reviews were not really impressive. So who knows ?

Like I said, Inconsolable Secret is magnificent, Knight of the North is even better than their Odyssey track. Also Shadowlands is a great album. You could check these out both and not get disappointed.
Although I must admit The Odyssey track is of extreme quality.
Are you going to do the review of The Odyssey some day ? It's a real challenge (haven't really worked it out myself to be honest) and probably the best epic collection ever ! (though Spaghetti 3 is also excellent).

I don't know what is about Glass Hammer for me. I picked up Chronomotree in anticipation of their Nearfest performance back in 2003 (hadn't heard any of their stuff, and that was their next to most recent album at the time). Loved it (and still enjoy it). At their Nearfest performance I was bored out of my mind. It seemed like something I should enjoy, but just seemed to drag on and on (I did enjoy the 2 songs from Chronomotree and the Kansas number they did with Rich Williams on guitar). I pretty much gave up on them after than. Then, a couple years ago, they had an epic track on The Odysse (Collusus project), and I really liked that song. So, last year I picked up their latest album Culture of Ascent. I liked the first few song, but the long tracks I find kind of boring. Not sure how to explain it but they just seem kind of bland and generic to me. I appreciate what they do, and they are very talented musicans, but so much of what they play just does nothing for me. I'm curious though, since I like Chronomotree so much and that track they did on the Odysse, if it would be worth it to me to try any of their other albums (Lex Rex is probably out, since that was most of their set at Nearfest)? |
