£22K incidental expense allowance
£24K additional costs allowance I'd love to see a government official asked to differentiate the two... |

At the same time as recovering money from the excesses of expenses for MPs all money should be recovered from benefit fraudsters. |

The government do a reasonably good job of that - they are a realatively easy target. It's the rich who don't pay their full dues that we are crap at getting hold of ![]() |

True - there appears to be a perception that there is a difference between benefit fraud and creative accounting when they are the actually same thing - taking money that isn't yours. Edited by Dean - May 15 2009 at 14:58 |

Tell me about it!
Try getting a half decent job in the UK when you're 51. It's minimum wage plus working tax credit - if you can find 30+ hours a week of course, or the Nat King Cole (dole). Sixty quid a week when you've worked all your life and paid God knows what in NI. Rant Rant Rant

If you don't like it become an MP and change it. Surely the chances of getting into Parliament as an independent is better now than it has ever been.

Re the bold part - yes you're absolutely right - I actually saw Martin Bell on TV this very morning saying just the same thing.
Only trouble is, you need the money for the deposit, a decent car to get around your prospective constituency plus the gift of the gab to put it into practice. And, perhaps, hide like the proverbial rhino. I don't really fancy remortgaging on the off-chance I might appeal more to the voters than the 'professionals' do!
Re the other comment - yeah, this was my first post on this thread and I thought you could let off steam. I must come across as a bit sore but I've been lucky enough to have decent jobs all my life and now I can't get Jack - and IMO it really does seem to be 'cos of my age (51).
For what it's worth I don't actually sign on - YET - but I had to pick up on Dean's comments about the average wage 'cos i think he's right.
Btw I worked as a chef on minimum wage + wtc until the owner went bust - now I can't even do that

Plus IMO 'large people' often claim they are unable to cook anything themselves with any degree of nutrition in it - but appear to have complete mastery of the microwave and are able to walk/waddle to the chip/kebab/chinese/indian.
Mind you I'm too lazy to cook some of the time and could walk to my local takeaway blindfold - but that could just be 'cos I'm just 150lb ![]() Edited by el dingo - May 18 2009 at 05:15 |

Aye, but if there are enough of them, who knows? Who is going to vote for any of the main 3 at the next election?

It really wouldn't matter how many of them there were - even if they were a "majority" they could not form a government so they would be worse than useless. The possibilities of corrupting these Independents by professional politicians and lobbyist would be endless and impossible to monitor or police. They would be so centred on getting their pet causes noticed they will be able to be bought and sold by the major parties like prawns (sorry pawns) while being fed with empty promises. Should it ever occur to them that as an unofficial party of independent MPs they actually could wield true power, the practicalities of organising a disparate bunch of newly elected non-politicians into a cohesive unit would be gargantuan task that if anyone could achieve it they would have to be so charismatic and persuasive they would effectively be a messiah figure of such impressive stature as to be positively terrifying.

Yes, you are quite right in having your rant - if you don't mind my rant about people ranting but not doing owt about it. I know it takes resources but if you feel strong enough about something we can still do something about it.
Personally I wouldn't become an MP in this society with too much selfishness and lack of personal responsibility around but I am happy to do my bit in support. I also think that in this day and age the luxury of being well paid for what we do is rapidly becoming history. We live our lives like tourists - expecting first world goods/services at third world prices - and get very uppity when jobs are moved to other countries where the labour force is a lot cheaper. Don't forget Britain used to be the biggest economy when workers were paid a pittance and had a low life expectancy. Also there are a lot more people in these countries. What's the world's population, 6 billion; how may in the UK - 65 million.

Point taken but if Labour came to power less than 100 years ago if there is sufficient depth of feeling then anything can happen. Personally I don't think much will work cos we are stuffed. We have devastated so much of the Earth's equilibrium that pretty soon it will be unrecoverable and local bickering will be pointless. A global solution is the only answer - but those that have stuff will not be prepared to sacrifice anything.

This really is one of my pet hates - cooking with a degree of nutrition is ridiculously easy; an example: We're having some work done on the house & yesterday there were a bunch of friends helping out, so on Sunday I thought I'd make something for their lunch. In half an hour, I'd made a stew of beef, lamb, pork (all the cheapest cuts & all with the fat trimmed off), fresh veg, lentils & barley - that was a huge cauldron of the stuff which went down very well & there's still half of it left - nothing artificial, nothing processed, everything fresh & all for under £12.00. Fatties - get your asses into the kitchen ![]() |

Perfect example - I live basically on my own for four days a week and If I can't get four tasty meals with fresh stuff for around £10 I think I've failed. All fresh, generally cheap cuts of meat as you say, fresh veg and freshly cooked.
No processed cr*p in my diet - I'm not a health freak, it's just basic common sense to avoid that sort of sh*t, IMO
Okay we push the boat out a bit at weekends when I'm with the Mrs, but just 'cos I'm on my own it don't mean I have to suffer an endless diet of pot noodles and takeaways. I never even resorted to that when I was a student.
Even salads are inexpensive and are only as boring as you want them to be - and jeez , £3or £4 buys you a basic recipe book any idiot can follow.
As for fat asses in the kitchen I think it's never gonna happen in a lot of cases 'cos of sheer damn laziness. Okay I taught myself to cook when I was very young 'cos I was interested, but you're never too old to learn. It's not difficult to feed yourself sensibly - if I can work as a professional cook/chef then I'm bloody sure Mr or Mrs Arbuckle could make basic healthy meals for themselves.

Change of rant...
Beyond vermin! Vile scum!! Now we have to pay for them to play pool and have three square meals a day, for the next..ooh, say 15 years years. I'd say they've come out of this considerably better off than their poor victim. Can anyone else spot whats wrong with that? Edited by Blacksword - May 20 2009 at 13:22 |

There are so many things I could type here, but I must bear in mind 2 things:
1 - The auto-censor would reduce my post to a row of meaningless asterixes 2 - I am an admin Andy - I know what you typed & knowing you as I do, I know what you wanted to type; re the latter, I agree with every word ![]() |
