Four year ago they were at the tail end of not having made the playoffs for about 10 straight years.  The last three years have been salad days for those bums.  Why I stay with them is a mystery.

Heh, my dad taught me ALWAYS stick with your team no matter what.
He had to suffer through the Yankees for all that time, until the mid 90'ds came.

^One thing that will stay with me through death is a hate for the Yankees.  That will be something I stick with like stink on an outhouse corncob until they bury me.

I adopted the Rangers back in the '80's when we had WOR on our local cable here in Omaha.  So it isn't like I am a New York boy who has to stay with his team.  But I have in this instance, and I keep thinking their deep pockets would eventually bring them back to being competitive.  Wrong.  I guess they are due to hoist the cup every 50 years or so, so 2044 looks like our year.Wink

Quoted for truth. Suffered for years with the Rams, we won a championship, and now it seems those years are back again. Ouch Still waiting for the Jazz in the NBA to win their first championship as well.

poor Scott......  he has been quiet today... I have a mental picture of him crashed on the couch in his Red Wings sweater still worn from last night... empty beer bottles and pizza boxes all around him... dazed and still wondering what happened last night.

come on everyone... let's cheer Scott up. Remind him that football season is only a few months away hahha.

Thanks Micky! You're a real peach.  I have a couple of fairly deep paper cuts on my hand.  Would you like to add some salt to those too?

^ Hey! Glad to see you here. I was a little afraid you were in a depression spiral and decided to give up on modern life and live in the forest.

I wouldn't last a week alone in a forest.  I'd become deer food.

I'm disappointed that the Red Wings didn't win, but quite frankly the Penguins were the better team this series.  The game that the Red Wings won 5 to 0 was the only game where the Red Wings actually looked like the Red Wings.  The Penguins could have won the first two games that the Red Wings won, if it wasn't for a couple of gratuitous bounces.  On the other hand, the Red Wings could have one 3 of the 4 games that they lost if it wasn't for some bad luck or bad calls that went against them.  Don't mistake that last comment for sour grapes.  That is hockey for you.  In Game 3, if the refs call the Penguins for too many men on the ice (I'd say 20 seconds with 6 guys on the ice certainly qualifies), the Wings might have been on the power play at the time that the Penguins scored the game winning goal.  That's not to say that the Penguins wouldn't have scored short-handed (see game 4).  The Penguins might still have won that game but it was still a bad break for the Wings.  In Game 6 with the score 2 to 1 Zetterberg hit the post with a shot.  An inch to the right and it is in the net (or maybe Fleury saves it?)  And then with just seconds left the Penguins' defenseman makes a save because Fleury is out of the net and when Franzen slides the rebound towards the net it gets past the defenseman's hand but it happens to hit his back skate which is on the line.  That close to tying the game up, but no cigar.  In Game 7, the Penguins scored their first goal on a play that could have been whistled for icing, but the linesman chose not to call it.  Stuart coughed up the puck and the Penguins scored.  It is what it is, but it was still an unfortunate break.  And than late in the game during desperation time one of the Wings (I forget who) beat Fleury up top, but the puck hit the crossbar and bounced away.  Again, an inch lower and the Wings score (or Fleury makes the save).  Fleury made two great saves at the end and the Penguins win the Cup.

If any of those plays go the Red Wings way and it could be a different team carrying the Cup.  On the other hand, the circumstances would have changed and the Penguins may still have won.  It was a great series and Malkin, Talbot, and Kennedy were too much for the Wings.  I am still left unimpressed by Sid the Kid however.

LOL Nah, not REALLY serious. I always hated the Pats so that whole fiasco was just a great fuel to add to the fire!

But Scott, glad to hear your taking it like a champ. Lose with honor! Then smash 'em next year.
But hey good game. On to next season.

Yeah, Pittsburgh did get some nice breaks. They certainly had to in game 7 to have any chance of winning a game no one gave them a chance to win.  I was rooting hard for Pittsburgh and watching that third period was certainly one of the most exhilarating periods of hockey I have ever seen.  I don't know if Wings fans can say the same but it was high drama either way.

The morning team that I listen to out of Milwaukee had Mike Eruzione on their broadcast on Friday. Anybody familiar with this guy knows that he was captain of the US hockey team during the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid. In my opinion, the greatest moment in US sports history. I remember watching it as a kid and still has an impact on me.  Great moment in this country's sports history.

looking good...  great to see Verlander getting his stuff back.   VERY dangerous team in 5 game series...  even a 7 game.  They are my dark horse to go to the W.S.  Lets the Yanks get the press till this fall... time and time again... pitching beats hitting.

The top 3 starters may be the best 3 in the business these days.  And Galarraga at number 4 had a great season last year, but is really struggling this year.  Dontrelle Willis is apparently going to be a bust at number 5 and the bullpen is really struggling but has some potential to be good with Perry, Zumaya, and Rodney.

Hey now, I recall the Wings committing interference off of every single faceoff in the series but hey, they do get away with it all year so no harm there.  There was the little matter of the winning goal of game 2 being scored as a direct result of Hossa committing an uncalled penalty:
Two minutes in, so blatant a 2 year old could have called it.  Also a bit of goal tender interference thrown in to boot.

Just pointing out the major problem the NHL still has: no consistency.  When the refs see a penalty they need to call it, every blanking time, no matter who it's on or how much time is on the clock.  This series was great for hockey but if they slip into there old ways then we'll be back to the soul sucking Devils style teams clutching their way to the cup.

Anyway, I'll be keeping this thread alive with pics from todays parade in the near future (got some good ones) so keep an eye out.

By the way, while I'm a Yankees fan at heart I've always routed for the Tigers (when not playing the Yankees of course) because of the Cecil Fielder factor.  Now there was an old fashioned athletic build, no roids there.

Time always wins.
