![]() Much better than I expected it to be. Yes, it has a pretty high kitsch factor with a record number of improbable "how the hell did they survive that?" cliffhangers and generally priorizes cool special effects over storytelling competence, but the cast and SFX are good enough to make the whole thing come across as occasionally suspenseful. Later on the story also begins seriously tackling some of the ethical dilemmas that an end-of-the-world situation like that would realistically create, maybe not as well as the more highbrow apocalyptic sci-fi out there but it's the sort of stuff that's positively surprising in a populist spectacle like this. 7/10 |

Well, I finally did it. Watched the granddaddy of them all, as far as American film.
Citizen Kane.
My overall impressions? Well...after having it hyped up so much for me, I can't say it met my expectations. I thought it was visually cool, yes....heck, for 1941 it's downright brilliant....but to me, the MOVIE itself lacked real substance. It lacked the type of characterization, story, etc. that makes audiences worldwide sit back and say "now THAT'S a good movie". It seems like the movie made for film students.
I guess it was too much style over substance for my tastes. Not that the style wasn't fantastic.

Have yet to see District 9 (plan on it though) and I really have no interest in a 37 hr long fantasy films, no matter how stunning they look visually.

Just watched Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia. Simply awesome. Definitely my favourite of the Peckinpah movies I've seen so far.

In the Valley of Elah
Quiet and moving mystery about a murdered soldier recently back from Iraq and his father's meticulous hunt for the killers. Tommy Lee Jones continues his stellar career with authenticity and Charlize Theron perfect as a local detective. |

Mulholland Drive for the second time.
usually I don't care for watching movies I've already seen, but with David Lynch's movies it makes me kind of able to understand the plot. Anyway, I prefer Inland Empire, though this one also is brilliant. And I finally think that I do understand the plot (to some extend). |

^ That and some of the reason's why certain things happened in Diane's Dream. I still don't get the man behind Winkie's though.

Flightplan
Completely implausible and extremely suspenseful story of a woman's daughter gone missing from a plane during flight. Widely panned but very entertaining escapist thriller, with Jody Foster's seasoned presence keeping things believable. |

One Minute to Nine
One of the most disturbing and moving documentaries I've ever seen about a mother just before going to prison for killing her abusive husband. Not for the faint-hearted but a very important film. |

Mysterious Island
The old Jules Verne adaption from 1961 with an engrossing plot, gorgeous photography and visual effects from Ray Harryhausen, and Bernard Hermann's vigorous score. Ah they don't make 'em like this anymore, and will bring you back to rainy weekend afternoons and old movies on the tube. Truly a classic. |

Straight Time
Dustin Hoffman as an ex-con just released and struggling to make it on the outside. Painfully real, heartbreaking, one of Hoffman's best performances and among the great street films of the 1970s along with Taxi Driver, Panic in Needle Park, Mean Streets and The French Connection |
