I saw it a while back but I thought Spider starring Ralph Fiennes, Miranda Richardson and Gabriel Byrne (Directed by David Cronenberg) was a pretty good film.

5/10? LOL

Gosh, that's generous.

This movie was a real stinker.  I actually saw it in the company of others (I usually watch films alone) and most of them thought it was terrible too.  It's not even bad in a good way.  It simply sucks.

Yes, it is very dated now, but still one of the most disturbing & chilling films I've ever seen - 8.5/10

Jim, thanks for posting this link. Clap

I watched this earlier and well... you are completely correct.  It's disturbing and chilling.  Even now.  In fact, I still feel a bit empty after watching it.  It may be dated but I was 3 or 4 years old when this was made, so I feel even closer to this film because of that.

I recommend everyone see this.  I realise it's disturbing but I still think everyone should see it at least once.

District 9. It's incredible. A mix of Schindler's List, but with aliens instead of Jews, and Black Hawk Dawn. 9 out of 10.

It's decent but the aliens are too lobster-like (come on, they managed to cross the entire space to arrive to the earth, and yet they're so uncivilized they fight over food like animals?), and near the end it becomes too Iron Man-like....

I think the point was that they turned violent in the harsh conditions that humanity subjected them to, and they were also the lower class aliens. Or maybe that line in the beginning about the leaders dying was supposed to be racism, but except for the one guy with the ship they weren't shown to be very intelligent. I agree that it was overdone a bit (in the beginning, why would the one kick the guy's arm off just because he stopped him from chewing on the tire? He's sentient, and he knows by now they kill for almost anything...), but fighting over food when you have none is perfectly reasonable. One interesting thing about the movie for me was that the only time the aliens' death got an emotional reaction from me was when they torched the nest. It seems appearance does matter.

Although I didn't feel bad for the humans either, so I assume I'm just callous about fake violence.

I enjoyed it and thought it was well acted.  I realise it's slow moving but that didn't put me off at all.  That just added to the whole premise of the film for me.

He moved out of the room and was walking about the streets later on.  Also, he's portrayed as a child throughout a lot of the film too with Gabriel Byrne as his father and Miranda Richardson as his mother.

I think you must have dozed off, David. Wink

The Soloist

Perfectly fine account of cellist Nathaniel Ayers [Jamie Fox] whose career is derailed by schizophrenia and the journalist [Robert Downey Jr.] who tries to help. Valiant attempt to show Ayers' world of music & manic delusion but something is missing from the story and the payoff is small. Shine meets Rainman though grittier than both. Worth a look.

Not even close. The original has director Robert Aldrich (Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?; The Dirty Dozen), Jimmy Stewart, Ernest Borgnine, Peter Finch, Richard Attenborough, and George Kennedy (all Oscar winners); the latter has Dennis Quaid, Giovanni Ribisi, and Hugh Laurie. . .do I need to write more?

Erm... you misquoted VB there, Bitblogger.

That was me that said that.

And I realised I was wrong with the Frank Tallman reference.  It was in fact Paul Mantz that died in the making of the original Flight of the Phoenix.  Which, as you correctly say, features an all-star cast.

I have seen the first film a couple of time but have not seen the re-make with Dennis Quaid.

I acknowledge your correct attribution--my error. Don't make one yourself--believe me that the original is the only one really worth it. It's apparent in the remake to see how inferior it is, although I can't imagine why you'd want to test that personally.

Indeed.  The remake was on the television the other day and I didn't watch it.  The problem is, it wasn't until it came on that I realised it was the remake as the announcer never specified and both films have the exact same title.

I saw Avatar last week with my until then girlfriend (Cry) and it's OK... but it's a very 6.5/10 movie... It surprise me that is number 34 in imdb.com, which is nonsense but people could be that wrong...

the other that we went to see was The Princess and the Frog... 5/10... it was fun... but why they put in so many songs...??? well... I'm sure is the only "child-movie" I have seen in the theater in like 10 years... jejeje..
Change the program inside... Stay in silence is a crime.

Everything is always rated really high when it comes out, it evens out eventually.

I hope so... but there are too many votes already... will be difficult to it to go down because of the average of votes...
