Is it me or do the Penguins seem to be perennially battling with the Devils.  I swear, every year, our main competition in the Atlantic Division is the Devils, regardless of what the point totals are, we always seem to be within two points of them.  The Penguins are having a pretty good year this year . . . but ohhh, look at that the Devils are one point ahead.

Don't get me wrong, I'm a fan of Martin Brodeaur, I'll just be glad when he decides that he's had enough . . . granted, that will probably be in 2020.

Go Pens!

It's a damn shame too because the Devils have always been void of much talent and have found all their success playing the worst style of hockey one could ever witness.  The trap game nearly destroyed hockey, making it nearly unwatchable, yet the league won't look into doing anything to rid the game of this terrible system.  Brodeaur is not the problem, the Penguins have a decent record against him, as most goalies could put together a storied career when they only have to face 20 shots maximum a game.  The clutching, grabbing, trapping, talentless hockey of the NJ Devils MUST BE STOPPED!  This team has no business in the playoffs

This year, watching the Red Wings is like watching M*A*S*H.  They've got 8 starters out hurt right now.  The Grand Rapids Griffins are doing a fairly decent job of keeping the Wings in the running for a playoff spot.  Hopefully, they will remain close enough that when all the starters come back in the new year they will be able to make a run for the playoffs and maybe they will be rested enough to do something in the playoffs.  Although, to be honest, I'm not really expecting much this year.  Just hoping they can keep their playoff appearance streak alive.

the Devils' style of hockey is disguisting, all interference, all the time, and it's never called.  How can a team this short on talent win so many damn games?  Modern NHL my ass.

that's why we have the Caps...  the Barnum and Bailey of modern NHL hockey...

don't think I can stay up for the Sharks game tonight... but man alive am I looking forward to the playoffs this year.  Looks like the Caps are making moves to try to win the Cup this year.. don't see your Captain traded mid-season too often.

Rush and hockey fans might find this of interest:

Neil Peart's Version of The Hockey Theme to Debut on NHL ON TSN Tomorrow

Neil Peart recorded a new rock version of The Hockey Theme last month, and the percussion-inspired rendition of "Canada's second national anthem" will make its NHL ON TSN debut tomorrow: Thursday, January 14, 2010 at 7 p.m. ET during the Philadelphia @ Toronto game.

Peart's rendition of The Hockey Theme also available to fans on iTunes on January 19 and his custom drum kit used to record "Canada's second national anthem" to be donated to the Hockey Hall of Fame.

"Growing up in Southern Ontario in the '50s and '60s as 'a kid who couldn't skate right' was a serious handicap," said Peart. "Hockey totally dominated our lives for half the year -- Sunday nights with my dad at the St. Catharines Arena cheering on the Junior A Blackhawks, anxiously watching NHL games on television, arguing in the schoolyard over favourite teams and players, trading hockey cards, putting them on our bicycle spokes, and playing on backyard rinks and frozen ponds, on the street, and on those old tabletop games. Hockey ruled.

So, all these years later, being invited to create a new version of "Canada's second national anthem" for TSN's NHL broadcasts was a huge honour to me, and an exciting musical challenge. The day of recording and filming it "in the presence of the Stanley Cup" was truly one of the great experiences of my life. (Take that, bullies from 50 years ago!)"

For the recording, Peart wore his trademark cap adorned with the logos of the original six NHL teams. He also wore a hockey jersey featuring his "Bubba's Bar & Grill" logo on the front and the number three on the back, in reference to the three members of Rush. The band's name was also sewn onto the jersey's nameplate.

Unfortunately, I missed the Wings/Caps game, but I did catch the post-game wrap-up and the way our announcers were talking you would have thought that the Wings won the game.  They said that the Wings really outplayed the Caps but lost as a result of a couple of early fluke type goals.  Not having seen it, I can't judge, but it is nice to see/hear that the Wings are starting to play better.  They looked really good against the Wild last night until they gave up the two late goals that sent the game to overtime.

yeah.. the Red Wings are definitely suffering the '40 minute' syndrome.  Didn't they give up 2 late ones again the other night.

as far as the Caps defense.... it's good enough... roughly 2 goals a game against top flight teams this week, with that offense  ....   they have 2 top flight goaltenders.. and another waiting in the wings getting significant playing time from the minors while Simeon, who nearly beat the Pens singlehandedly last year until he had one bad game (game 7 of course Angry) is healing up.  The Caps are a much better team this year from the one that nearly knocked out the eventual champion.  Look at their record when Ovie was out for injury/suspension.  That team is loaded.... and probably a good defenseman away from being THE odds on favorite to win it all.  They'll probably address that before the end of the season.. even if not...  they look like the class of the east at this point.

Ah well.  No surprises.  The Wings suck at shootouts and the Penguins are lights out in them.

10-0 for the Caps....

let's see if the idiots from ESPN.com finally move the Caps to the top of the rankings this week hahha....  though it is funny to talk about a 'western bias' for once in sports haha.

13 straight... and a shame the Penguins games will probably be postponed tomorrow for weather since I think the airports are shut down... that would have been another death match. That has always been a great rivalry.. but has gone to another level with Cindy and Ovie.

I know I am a huge fan... but that combination of talent offensively and great goaltending is really making me think this could be the year the Cup comes to D.C.

You can be pretty certain that the Wings aren't going to be the team to stop the Caps this time.

I sure am not thinking it will be Sharks... we've been down this road before.  Who'd REALLY be surprised to see them go out in the first round.

If the Red Wings make it into the playoffs... they'll be very dangerous.

The next NHL season opens in Helsinki Clap Wild and Hurricanes are playing about five kilometres away from my home on October 7th and 8th next autumn, very very tempted to get a ticket...

The Wings just eked out  3-2 OT win over Ryan Miller and the Buffalo Sabres.  They are back in the number 8 spot with a game against number 9 Calgary on Monday.
