Damn, I thought I was watching a sequel to Jaws last night in the 3rd period between San Jose and Detroit. The Sharks were just lurking. They smelled blood, scored 2 goals to tie it, and then won it in overtime. It appears as though the Wings will not be heading to another rematch with the Penguins.

OMG. How did the Canadiens beat the Capitals after being down 3 games to 1? There is plenty of crying going on in our nation's capital this morning.
Their team really isn't set up all that well for the playoffs: no shut down defenders and no leadership. They won for the same reason Ottawa played the Penguins so tough: shut down defensemen and great goaltending can squash out offensive powerhouses in the playoffs. The Caps players also simply did not show a willingness to do the things that you need to in the playoffs. Semin, in particular, disappears in the playoffs every year.
While the road in the east is now much easier for my Pens the loss of Jordan Staal adds to my lingering concerns about the teams defensive abilities. Keeping my fingers crossed they have the depth to make it to the finals and that Staal will return by then.

It is hard to believe that the Wings and Coyotes that played last night were the same two teams that played on Sunday. Coyotes totally dominated the Wings on Sunday in Detroit, and Detroit returned the favor in Phoenix last night 6 to 1. They "found the road to San Jose".
Tonight's Montreal - Washington game is intriguing. Hard to believe that that one is going to a game 7.

Would just like to take this moment to point out that Sidney Crosby finished 1 goal ahead of Overated despite having 70, that's right 70, fewer shots. Stamkos, who tied Crosby for the league lead in goals, took 71 fewer shots than Overated.
I have to take joy in this as the Penguins chance to compete for a second straight cup left town with Scuderi and Gill at the beginning on the year. Alex Goligoski is awful enough to lose a series for them on his own.

amped up for the big east-west game today.
A nice test to see where the Caps really are. Curious to see if Bruce treats it as a 'playoff' type game or just continues fine-tuning the lineup... he has been tinkering with his lines and using the last weeks of the season to set his lines and find the best combinations, with all the players picked up at the trade deadline, for the playoffs.

The Wings just eked out 3-2 OT win over Ryan Miller and the Buffalo Sabres. They are back in the number 8 spot with a game against number 9 Calgary on Monday.

The next NHL season opens in Helsinki Wild and Hurricanes are playing about five kilometres away from my home on October 7th and 8th next autumn, very very tempted to get a ticket...

13 straight... and a shame the Penguins games will probably be postponed tomorrow for weather since I think the airports are shut down... that would have been another death match. That has always been a great rivalry.. but has gone to another level with Cindy and Ovie.
I know I am a huge fan... but that combination of talent offensively and great goaltending is really making me think this could be the year the Cup comes to D.C.

10-0 for the Caps....
let's see if the idiots from ESPN.com finally move the Caps to the top of the rankings this week hahha.... though it is funny to talk about a 'western bias' for once in sports haha.

Unfortunately, I missed the Wings/Caps game, but I did catch the post-game wrap-up and the way our announcers were talking you would have thought that the Wings won the game. They said that the Wings really outplayed the Caps but lost as a result of a couple of early fluke type goals. Not having seen it, I can't judge, but it is nice to see/hear that the Wings are starting to play better. They looked really good against the Wild last night until they gave up the two late goals that sent the game to overtime.
yeah.. the Red Wings are definitely suffering the '40 minute' syndrome. Didn't they give up 2 late ones again the other night.
as far as the Caps defense.... it's good enough... roughly 2 goals a game against top flight teams this week, with that offense .... they have 2 top flight goaltenders.. and another waiting in the wings getting significant playing time from the minors while Simeon, who nearly beat the Pens singlehandedly last year until he had one bad game (game 7 of course ) is healing up. The Caps are a much better team this year from the one that nearly knocked out the eventual champion. Look at their record when Ovie was out for injury/suspension. That team is loaded.... and probably a good defenseman away from being THE odds on favorite to win it all. They'll probably address that before the end of the season.. even if not... they look like the class of the east at this point.
