I wouldn't have pegged you as a Karma fan, but maybe I'm just being too judgemental of someone enjoying Pat Metheny. :P However, I only listened to Karma once (a bad habit of mine) so it may not be as avant as I'm thinking. As long as you don't start talking about Machine Gun my world will remain stable. ;-)

I've only heard one Metheny album so far, need to fix that. Blarg, so much stuff to hear.

Alex, have you heard any of Pharoah Sanders' solo work?

No, I haven't, but it's on my list.

My ever-growing insanely infinitely long list. LOL

Good, I'm not the only one who has one of those. LOL

I can only imagine how it'll be 20 years from now. LOL

Same here, though hopefully I'll at least be able to get it to reach an equilibrium if not shrink some at some time. Tongue

You should know by now that the discovery of new music is like a scientific breakthrough, it opens more doors than it closes.

That is so true.

I wouldn't consider either Karma very avant or myself an avant fan, so I can't tell.

BTW: I'm not really a big fan of Pat Metheny(yet), it's just that my dad has like 20 of his albums and I grew up with them.Wink

I still need Clivages.

Univers Zero are one of those bands I go months and months without listening to, and then really enjoy them for a short time, and then repeat. Not sure why.

Thanks. LOL

Everything that is said in that piece is a reference. There's also Beefheart, Zappa, Gong, and others.

I've only heard Per un Amico out of those. I'm not sure, but I've always thought it was like a "compilation" of the best of 70's British Prog. There's the quirkiness of Gentle Giant, the symphonic of Genesis, the eclecticism of some other bands, and so on.

Though, I know most of you will disagree. Mind you, it's the only RPI I own, with the exception of Crac!, but that's really jazz rock, but very orignal.

I do the same thing, to me chamber rock gets to sound to much alike, although I do love what I hear.

Crac! is splendid. Area is definitely the best RPI band I've heard by a good distance.

I'm sort of like that with a lot of bands, especially some of my favorites.  Don't know why, I guess I listen to too much of them for a while and need to distance myself a bit. LOL

Yeah, that's how I feel too.

I'm that way about classical music as well. I tend to go long periods of time without feeling in the mood for it, then have short bursts where I actually want to hear it.

That is why my play count is so low on Last.fm, I ruined PF by overplaying, and I don't want to do the same thing to anything else, so now I wait.

Yeah, I generally just start scrolling through winamp and decide on an album at random.  It still ends up being a favorite a lot of the time, but I toss in some oddballs (such as Shakti, which I'm listening to now.)

Someday I'll actually get a Shakti album.
I usually decide on random too.

UZ is different than that though... cause I wouldn't say they're one of my favorites (like Rush, Kraftwerk, Flecktones, Henry Cow, etc.). With favorites, I tend to listen a crapload of them for a while and then move on only because there's so much music in my collection and so much to be heard. I can't listen to one band all the time, despite how much I may love them. There's just too much good stuff out there.

I haven't listened to Henry Cow much in the past 9-10 months, but that's because I had almost 1,500 plays for them in the year or so time period before that.

Ah, that's one indeed good, but rather different to his early classics.

I wouldn't bet all my money on this, but I think you might enjoy quite a lot As Falls Wichita, So Falls Wichita Falls. It's not electronic, but the title track is very ambient-esque and it lasts 20 minutes.

(don't feel obliged to listen to it)
