Can't really get on board with that.  Maybe after the new album comes out I'll feel differently.  The first one still doesn't do a lot for me, even though the live shows gave me a better appreciation for some of the songs (and some I liked anyway).  We'll have to wait and see.

I agree that SoNE is a good swan song, but I'd hate to think that was it.  As much as I like all of TFK side projects, not one of them really even comes close to the main band.

From the Mike Portnoy news thread, I thought I'd throw it in here cause you all would appreciate the humor.

Greetings from a wet Manchester, anything happening apart from Portnoy's exit from DT ? They are producing a new album in 2011 so they must have a drummer lined up, maybe a change of direction in the next CD ?
I am REALLY into GALLEON'S "From Land To Ocean" - although I have also re-visited Glass Hammer in the last few weeks. I think I will collect Galleons back catalogue, and perhaps get the latest Glasshammer effort. Anymore big tips for the next Symphonic Rock Masterpeice ?

Haven't you heard?

Ringo is joining.

Quote I am REALLY into GALLEON'S "From Land To Ocean" -

I got that album on a recommendation on the Spock's Beard board but have never really listened to it. I think I was in my only-listening-to-Flower-Kings-phase coz they satisfied (and still do) on all fronts.

So, you think I should dig it out again?

Quote Anymore big tips for the next Symphonic Rock Masterpeice ?

Yeah!

"Selling England by the Pound" by Genesis

"Close to the Edge" by Yes

You can't go wrong with those twso albums

LOL

Just watch out for Galleon's Engines of Creation.  I recall e-dub's having many unkind words for that album.

Ha ha
I don't reply to many things here but I just love the idea of RingoStar joining. With a little statue of Portnoy on the kit. That could be a great album cover! Ringo!!! Do it!

Um... I gotta say that IMHO, The Flower Kings are the replacement for the yes genesis kind of prog of the 70s. Nothing that I've heard gets near them. Even Yes and Genesis never had the sheer amount of symphonic or any music produced by TFK.
TFK never sound like they are trying to sound a certain way or copy a style or emulate anyone. That's rare in prog unfortunately. Luckily, I live very near TFKs hometown in Sweden and know that when they perform in a small local venue, which they do occasionally, they still outclass almost anyone I've ever seen. I'm from London and have seen them all.
Symphonic through and through!

Um... Symphony X maybe. They're good and have a symphonic kinda name.

It looks like October is going to be the month of missed gigs for me.

Firstly, we have IQ at The Met in Bury.  Now I've seen IQ loads of times so that's not a biggie but they'll be performing The Wake in it's entirety whilst yours truly will be on holiday in Las Vegas Ouch.  Damn, I'd love to have seen that.

Then there's a little matter of the Summers End Festival with Phideaux making an appearance Ouch.  His first ever UK date I believe.  Yep, whilst Phideaux and his band cross the Atlantic one way my wife and I travel in the opposite direction LOL.  It's nothing personal Mr Xavier as that's another show I'd love to have seen.

Plus whilst I am stateside I also miss the double whammy to end all double whammies - Agents of Mercy/Karmakanic Ouch Ouch.  Now that's just not fair.

Finally, Ozric Tentacles finally play in Manchester (they usually play places like Avebury Circle, Glasto etc) and I'll miss that too Ouch.

At least I'll be back for Joe Satriani Tongue and then there's the little matter of Frost* Big smile in December too.  And they're supported by Ark as well (John Jowitt's original band and now a side project of his).  That's an absolute cert for me.  Rob, do you fancy that, it's at The Academy 3?  A good opportunity to blow the froth off a couple methinks.

I'd heard that too.  The whisper is the next album is going to be a double disc concept album about Thomas The Tank Engine.

All kidding about who the next DT drummer is going to be aside, if you read the bands official statement about Portnoy leaving, it's seems to indicate they are not planning on changing direction at all.  A shame really, as that band really needs something to get them out of their rut (mind you, I have enjoyed the last three albums a good deal, but there has been no real change in their sound or approach since Scenes).

I had that Galleon album on my wish list years ago, but am a bit wary of anything under the neo-prog label.  Too much of what I've sampled of that genre just bores me to tears.  On the other hand, I've always enjoyed IQ for the most part, like early Marillion, and have enjoyed some of the more obscure bands listed as Neo (Asgard being the best example).  So, would I like it you think?

As to Glass Hammer, I've read this new one is in the vein of Chronomotree, which is my favorite album by them.  However, I've only listened to a couple, and was not impressed by their live performance at Nearfest 2003.  I may have to pick this one up though.

Looking forward to the next AOM, which is up for preorder already.  I will wait until I can get it for a reasonable price though, from Greg Walker.

I and many others on here would agree with this Wink

To me they are definitely the best prog band since the 70sWink

I am indeed just 50 miles from Uppsala. Iived mostly in north west london. Brondesbury(willesden area). I came over here a few years ago just to see Pain of Salvation. I just loved everything I saw here and houses cost almost nothing. £50,000 will be a pretty good detached house around here. Ha ha!
Now I live mid way between Pain of Salvation and The Flower Kings. Not a bad situation really.
Trouble is that we have just released our album and all the signs are that it will go very well. That means that the band must all get back in the same location. Not here I fear! LA or London. Aargh!
I love that I see POS regularly in their hometown free or a small place somewhere. Same with TFK of course. If I was a guitarist(which I am apparently), I'd like to be Stolt. Unbelievable that he is almost unknown(in the normal world) eh?
where are you?

Anyone pick up Future Past from Hasse Froberg And His Musical Companions? Really is a nice disc. Have to get through it all as it just arrived, but very impressed.

E,

I have it myself and really like it.  There's a lot of good stuff on there, espicially for a fan of the Flower Kings.  I'm still digesting the whole thing, but off the top of my head "Only my Blood" is my favorite so far.  There is a fantastic bluesy keyboard solo towards the end that blew me away the first time I heard it as it was so unexpected.  Hasse picked up a winner on that one.

Yeah, I'm thinking I may have to pick up the Hasse album.  My reason for not getting it so far has been that I'm not sure I can tolerate a whole album of his singing.  This may sound strange, but I've always found the contrast of his and Roine's vocals to be very appealing.  But unlike Roine, when a song is all Hasse, his voice can start to grate on me (mainly in the hard rocking, "shouty" songs like Paradox Hotel and Sword Of God.......two songs I have never liked).  However, reading various reviews and impressions of the album, I'm discovering that a lot of people who weren't expecting much have been very impressed.  So I may have to give it a go.  As it stands, it's the only FK related project I haven't bought as soon as it was available.

^ Mostly, we just talk about other Prog Archives members.  I think you were the subject on a few pages...maybe in sixties or so, give or take a few pages.  It's petty I know but it fills an otherwise cold and hollow part of my heart.

Obviously, the esteemed collaborator doesn't realize just how many side projects the members of the band have.  Also, I didn't realize 10 studio albums (if you don't count Stolt's, The Flower King, or any of the live albums or DVD's, which would add about 5 more) was considered "not that many".  It's the same number of albums as ELP and Van der Graaf Generator, and if you include The Flower King, same number as Gentle Giant.  I'd also say that The Flower Kings is very much in the same league as those bands.

Also, there appears to be a good possibility of even more albums from them.

Smile Can I just say that in my opinion, their output is actually greater than almost any ather band(not Zappa of course). The sheer length of each album, with no real sign of fillers, is quite astonishing. Even the old fan albums added mode non filler material. They are the most astounding band and truly give you your money's worth.
Is this thread going to end soon? LOL
