I really wish I didn't have to explain this but:
1. Bill O is a big jerk.
2. He really likes the sound of his own voice and often runs his mouth without having his brain engaged.
3. What is said is factually wrong and he should know better.
4. The only thing religious about him is that he worships himself.

Nonsense doesn't deserve any respect. "Tide goes in, Tide goes out" was what he said, and to use that to prove that Christianity is not a scam is just nonsense. Would you disagree with that?

An argument ,which claims that the movement of the tides proves the existence of a supernatural being with a clearly delineated set of properties, does not deserve respect.

Regardless, it's a video for humor and not debate if you didn't catch the joke.

This reminds me of a story actually.

Two kids that I worked with over the summer would always argue over the existence of God. The one was an agnostic and the other was some sort of Baptist. I never could remember the exact denomination. I would stay out of it because it's pretty pointless, I don't have a clear side, and I actually like to do my job well instead of goofing off.

The religious kid said one time that observations of Mars proved the existence of God. With my interested piqued I asked for details. He said that we know that after the great flood, God blew all of the water that he used to flood the Earth on to Mars. Since they discovered ice on Mars, and man would have had no way of knowing it was there before recently, this proves that God exists.

I tried to explain to him how this doesn't prove anything of the sort. He didn't really seem to understand that there could be a million other causes for the ice's existence and the story of God placing the water there.

I got fed up with trying to teach him a lesson so I told him that the ice on Mars is actually frozen carbon dioxide and not water.

NephilimFree says the great flood caused the craters on the moon - your story reminded me of that. BTW: The ice on the other planets, while consisting of water to some degree, usually also contains carbon monoxide - at levels that would be toxic to life as we know it. But religious people who are so far out cannot be reached with arguments on that level ... they tend to simply ignore them if they seem not to be compatible with the pre-conceived theory.

I'm at work now, but I can't wait to hear the reasoning behind that one when I get home.

^ as a  percentage of total volume there isn't a huge amount of water on earth - less than half a percent as I recall. All water anywhere in the solar system proves is the existance of chemistry.

Total volume doesn't really matter though.

Indeed, that water is ~ 70% of surface area seems more pertinent.

Yikes.  It seems that grabbing numbers from random websites can lead to erroneous calculations.  Shocked

Disrespect, of course. No fear there, though, brah.

It's wishful thinking on behalf of the religious. A fear of hell in some form or the other has been instilled in them, and they can't imagine that the other side does not have a similar problem. Or by another angle, they reason that us atheists are rejecting God for some reason - like we know deep within us that He exists and we simply ignore that, but in turn it gives us nagging doubts and fear. Of course neither is true, although there may of course be individuals for whom it applies.

I know Bill Reilly is a jerk, but even jerks have the right to express their opinions.

Now David Silverman is a jerk of worst kind (And an ignorant, because instead of replying why the tides exist, he answered "I don't know but it's not a magic man in the sky").

He is accusing all religions of being scammers in a billboard paid for him, and if he can't prove why he posted "ALL RELIGIONS ARE SCAMS", he will be facing (I believe already is) several sues (and will loose them), because accusing somebody of a crime without evidence, is a crime and a scam is a fraud.

His reply was worst, he even said "I know that religious leaders know religion is a scam", he was asked how can you affirm this and he replied "I don't know, but I am sure they know"

I can't be arsed to view the video clip....but what is this about tides?  I thought it was well known that the gravitational forces exerted by the moon (among other things) caused tides.

No Mike, don't mix apples and oranges.

I'm talking of something ,more terrestrial, fear tha the opponent makes a good point (The same fear a political or a plaintiff has), and I believe Bill Reilly made a couple of good points among all the nonsenses he spoke:.

  1. Those billboards are insulting
  2. Those billboards and what he said (Religious leaders know religion is a scam) is defamatory. A scam is a fraud and if you accuse somebody of committing a fraud, you have to prove it....He may go in front of a judge and talk about the non existence of a magic man in the sky, the judge will respond "Where is the evidence of a fraud"...And he will have to reply (as he usually does) "I don't know".

So Mike I'm sure this guys doesn't believe in God, and it's OK, but I believe he has crossed a legal limit.

Iván
