It refers to someone who only believes in or trusts God when he's in some sort of serious trouble. Kind of like someone who prays to God, "if you get me out of this one, then I'll donate $1000 to charity." Then the person gets through whatever he was praying about, but doesn't follow through on the promise. That sort of thing. |

Yeah I remember hearing an old phrase "there are no atheists in a foxhole". Actually there are and gays, too.

Not much point of making associations to foxholes and war. Of course a a person being spoonfed from an early age in childhood with christianity will shout for god in a distressing situation. That is the point, that anyone in a situation of distress will shout for Shiva, Odin, Baal, or any kind of higher autoriry if the person in question feels hopeless.

I don't think I would pray for Shiva or Baal if I was in trouble... Quite the contrary, in fact...

Quote of the Day "I believe I came from God,not from a monkey. -- Rep. Jack Kingston on Real Time, THE ANTI-SCIENCE PARTY.... This segment, by way of Daily Kos' Jed Lewison, helps reinforce much of what's wrong with the state of critical thinking in the Republican Party. "Real Time" host Bill Maher asked Rep. Jack Kingston (R-Ga.) a fairly straightforward question: "Do you believe in evolution?" Kingston not only rejected the foundation of modern biology, he explained it this way: "I believe I came from God, not from a monkey." He added, "If it happened over millions and millions of years, there should be lots of fossil evidence." Seriously, that's what he said. LinkHey Monkey, if I kicked your ass real hard, I'd likely break your tail bone. Think about that. Edited by Slartibartfast - February 04 2011 at 23:39 |

^ he's right about not "coming" from monkeys, to the extent that humans are one of many hominid types having little in common with apes other than basic construction and perhaps a very distant shared gene:
It is generally believed that the Pan/Homo separation occurred about 6 – 8 million years ago, but the molecular clock (a method of calculating evolution based on the rate at which genes mutate) suggests the genera division 4.6 – 6.2 million years ago. Previous studies looked at average genetic differences between human and chimp. The new study compares the ages of key sequences of genes of modern humans and modern chimps. Some sequences are younger than others, indicating that chimps and humans gradually separated over a period of 4 million years. The youngest human chromosome is the X chromosome which is about 1.2 million years more recent than the 22 autosomes. And the "I believe I came from God" part of his statement is another way of saying "I don't know where I came from" which, religious views aside, is a reasonable conclusion. |

Well, there was a Republican Representative called Ben Bridges (2007), who said that evolution was part of an agenda perpetrated by the Jews (Stupid and anti Semite). He also operates a link called fixedearth.com in which he says that the earth doesn't rotate but floats motionlessly in space because there's a computerized electro magnet engineered by God (Even the most fanatical religious lesaders should abandon this guy). HONESTLY LINK Iván

Bill Maher loves to make people look stupid so he looks smart (the same with all political comentators or comedians). In this case, he succeeded in a major way. I believe in evolution, 100%, but I also believe in letting people explain why they have such ridiculous views. Certainly, this guy has been blinded by religion. And all people laughing at him have been blinded in this nice attempt to make every single religious person look like a fool.

The world is rife with many a false dichotomy; science v.s. religion is probably the oldest one in the book (no pun intended

I hate how the crowd claps at every stupid half-wit comment he makes, ensuring that any possible semi-intelligent conversation is quickly interrupted by their inane laughter.

You have to be careful with the dichotomy of "Science or Religion." On the surface, it is a false one; one can obviously believe in both religion and science. However, there are instances when it is a true dichotomy. For example: Belief in evolution and belief in a literal Adam & Eve. One can't have both. In short: You have to do some tap-dancing if you want to accept both religion and science. |
