Brian: Have you listened to UZ's Uzed? I think that people at PA generally would find that more accessible than the debut. I happen to love the self-titled's form of chamber music -- been into such music longer than I've really been into Prog. Art Zoyd, and I expect that some people may be sick of me dropping that name most every chance I get, is my favorite of the groups in PA of the so-called RIO chamber rock ilk (it was also the first RIO band I remember getting into - though recently I've been getting back into Henry Cow's Western Culture in a very big way).
I'm really impressed with Gismonti and definitely will look for the album you mentioned. I must have heard that Vangelis album as Vangelis was a favourite of mine for years. I love Bowie's Berlin trilogy - Heroes is a favorite.
With a great many artists I enjoy the early works the most, including what I know of Rypdal. Weather Report's is one where I love the first two albums - particularly the second - but subsequent ones never really clicked.

I'm still having a hard time with the Univers. The Bowie was my first and it still took a while to to really get into him. Rypdal is wonderful. Kind of ventured out into a little different direction on that one. The Shakti is probably their most accessible. I'd recommend that as a starting point for the Indo Prog curious. I haven't delved too far into that but this was my starting point. North Star isn't a bad entry point into his music although I'd steer the curious to Songs From Liquid days. The Gurntz is the only one I have and I can't understand why ECM hasn't released it on CD. Must be patient. Gismonti is an awesome musician. Another one of those artists that I like the earlier stuff more than the later. | think the same as you about Rypdal and Gismonti

Very good, eclectic list. I love Univers Zero's debut; my fave album of the group, and one of my faves in PA. I also really like the Bowie, the APP and enjoy Rypdal's, and I think that Shakti is superb. I won't vote at this time because I have yet to familiarize myself sufficiently with music from all of the albums on the list. I really like Philip Glass, but don't remember if I know that one. When I was quite a lot younger he was one of my most listened to artists, but for some reason I have listened to much of his music in many years. I'm interested in the Gruntz, and have been listening to Gismonti on YouTube, which is seriously excellent.
I love polls like these, they get me discovering and re-discovering a lot of, I think, superb music.

Animals, but only because there's no I Robot (and no Death of a Ladies Man from Cohen, but I understand that one)

Hard to compete with Songs from the Wood. Unless you are Univers Zero.

Man, I Robot was so awesome. I used to drive to work while listening to that and shoving bagels down my throat. Great mood enhancer.

Unless you're one of those people hung up on "coherence". I love the fact that the songs are all over the place stylistically.

Songs from the Wood, then Animals and Peter Gabriel's Car (debut album). Each an essential 5 star album in my book.

My fave from 1977 has not been mentioned by anybody, not surprising, since it is incredibly obscure- Helmut Koellen-You Won't See Me

I changed my mind soooo many times. I finally voted for Songs From The Wood.
Not because of my taste nowadays, that would go to Weather Report. But at the time it was the one that made the biggest impact. I was a massive JT fan. Pre-ordered all their albums from an importer in Adelaide, so I would get them early. I had just seen JT live at the Apollo Stadium, met Ian Anderson and John Evan.
I went nuts for the album.
