Yup as we all know dt-fans, the octavarium album was leaked. And there where several minor changes from the leak and the final version. (They had cut Root of all evil, And the answer lies within diffrently.)

Now ive noticed the most major change seemes to be the ending of octavarium, in the leak it was a flute playing and now it is replaced with the album intro.

The last 3 dream theater albums has some things in common. The first is that the next album opens the way the other ended. IE the first song on train of thought is a continuace of the last song on six degrees ant the root of alle evil is a contiuance of in the name of god.

Now in the leak ending with a flute i thought that the next album was going to open with flutes but instead they had the intro on octavarium as the ending on octavarium.

So this must be to represent eternity witch is marked by a lying 8 wich fits the album theme well. And i think it also is meant to represent the last album in a triology.

Also another thing incommon is the continuance of the glass prison.

The first track on Six degrees is the first chapter of the glass prison

The second track on train of thought is the second chapter of the glass prison

And the third track on Octavarium is the third chapter of the glass prison

And i think the third chapter is the last...but i think dream theater is great planning ahead.

Anybody else noticed this?

Any other changes from the leak to the original?

I guess that either they split up after the Octavarium tour, or they do something completely different. Or they split up AND do something completely different.

The first track on Octavarium, The Root of All Evil, is the third song in the AA mega-ordeal...not the third.  It contains sections 6 and 7 of the 12 step program.  There will be more songs in this theme.

Ah sorry i have just gotten octavarium and have mixed up the songs abit...ah well it would have been a nice idea to make it in that system. It is a bit strange that they continue this glass prison theme thingie anyway

The Mirror actually was the first part of the series, so you are totally wrong...

The Mirror was more of a prologue...  he didn't have an idea of doing a whole series when he wrote The Mirror, that didn't come until later.

Well I'd say the Mirror was the first part because that's where all the "ideas" came from.

Yes, he had a large drinking back then.

If you want the lyrics, here are some:

Temptation-
Why won't you leave me alone?
Lurking Every Corner, everywhere I go

Self Control-
Don't turn your back on me now
When I need you the most

Constant pressure tests my will
My will or my won't
My Self Control escapes from me still...

Hypocrite-
How could you be so cruel
and expect my faith in return?

Resistance-
Is not as hard as it seems
When you close the door

I spent so long trusting in you
I trust you forgot
Just when I thought I believed in you...

[Sample is Meryl Streep from the film "Falling In Love".]
"What're you doing?
What're you doing?"

It's time for me to deal
Becoming all too real
living in fear-
Why did you lie and pretend?
This has come to an end
I'll never trust you again
It's time you made your amends
Look in the mirror my friend

[Sample is Jeremy Irons from the film "Damage".]
"That I haven't behaved as I should"
[Sample is Mary Beth Hurt from the film "Light Sleeper".]
"Everything you need is around you. The only danger is inside you."
[Sample is Jeremy Irons from the film "Damage".]
"I thought you could control life, but it's not like that. There are things you can't control."

Let's stare the problem right in the eye
It's plagued me from coast to coast
Racing the clock to please everyone
All but the one who matters the most

Reflections of reality
are slowly coming into view
How in the hell could you possibly forgive me?
After all the hell I put you through

It's time for me to deal
Becoming all too real
living in fear-
Why'd I betray my friend?
Lying until the end
Living life so pretend
It's time to make my amends
I'll never hurt you again

Yea, those quotes actually made the album quite enjoyable :)

How can 'The Mirror' be about AA, when you see Mike drinking beer a couple of times on the '97/'98 tour? That seems to make no sense to me...

i heard that the section in the middle of "honor thy father" with the different voices comes from the film Magnolia, starring Tom Cruise. I have seen the film and i would agree but can anybody confirm this for me?

Is the continuing series of songs called "Reflections of Reality"?

This is a lyric from the mirror and the train of thought booklet says that "This Dying Soul" has parts 4 and 5 of Reflections of Reality. It also has the lyrics "hello, mirror, so glad to see you my friend" which is a continuation of "the mirror" from awake.

Those lyrics also mirror "Hello victoria, so glad to see you my friend" from scenes from a memory.

Since we are talking about endings leading onto beginings of the next album... the end of scenes from a memory has the sound of static and so does the begining of 6DOIT

Perfectly correct, my friend. Maybe you can now enjoy Dream Theater's actual music?

I've been pondering the reason as to why they decided to put the opening of The Root Of All Evil at the end of Octavarium (the song and the album). It bookends the album and makes it feel more cohesive and more like a concept album (which, in some ways, it is).

However, this breaks the trend of starting each album where the last began. My only theories are that 1) Someone is leaving, and it may be Jordan, because this trend started when he joined the band for SFAM and then into SDOIT. 2) The band is breaking up permanently, which would be a shock, but with songs like Never Enough...who knows? 3) They've just broken the chain of albums, that's all. Perhaps the next one will be something completely different than their last 4 albums?

It could mean a number of things, but now I'm glad I kept the leaked version of the title track Octavarium with the flute at the end. It sounds more majestic and 70's Prog-sounding than rehashing the opening of the album. Sure it fits the lyrics, but I just liked the flute better at the end!

-Marc.
