Here I just thought I finally learned what a meme was, and now some people are saying that isn't even it.  I'm old and confused.

Indeed.  There are a few genuine memes in this style (such the O RLY? owl and the original CAN HAZ CHEESEBURGER cat) but most memes are things like Dramatic Chipmunk, the Jedi Squirrels, and (possibly the original  internet meme?) Dancing Baby.
