Del Jones' Positive Vibes - s/t (psych mix). 1972 Hikeka.

Long time Dallas friend Mark T introduced me to this album in 2003, and it's one of the best personal discoveries in the last 15 years. I found the reissue LP shortly thereafter.

The single most intense Black America album ever. Basically Del Jones is the Philadelphia ghetto version of the Berlin based Cosmic Couriers clan. Intense does not even begin to describe this album. The anger that comes through will melt your mind. And all the freaked out vocals, wah wah guitar, flute and heavy rhythms will make you grab for your Ash Ra Tempel albums and hold on tight. Given the economic conditions of the housing projects of the early 1970s, it's surprising more albums didn't seep through like this. 'Cold Turkey' has some of the most anguished freaked out madness since John L. on 'Flowers Must Die' from Ash Ra Tempel's "Schwingungen"!

Like Velvert Turner, Del Jones released two versions of the same album: A "soul" mix and a "psych" mix. The soul mix is available on CD and appears legit. The psych mix has only been reissued on LP so far, and did involve Del Jones, so we'll consider that legit. But no one has issued it on CD to date. The soul mix is not that much different really - there's an additional horn section and some of the guitar work has been moved into the background. It's still a monster and highly recommended. On both albums, there are a couple of throw away soul numbers that are fortunately short - but most of the album will fry your brain!

Priority: 1 CDRWL.

When Renbourn put this album out around 1970, it was quite an unusual release. He and his friend Bert Jansch were at that point heading the band Pentangle, and between their solo efforts and the band's had been exploring a synthesis of folk, blues, classical and jazz styles. This album brought to the mix yet another element: Medieval and Renaissance music. Renbourn's solo and small ensemble arrangements of the material are mostly gentle and respectful, yet incorporate a jazz flair that give them a truly contemporary sound. This was really good dinner and/or 'date' music for the period: quiet and intimate, and with plenty of personality. It's not very long, however--couldn't someone put it together with "Sir John Alot..." as a twofer ? Amazon.

Thanks for the unknown John Renbourn's vote Thumbs Up. This great musician is only quoted on P.A  on Bert Jansch's albums.

I simply adore that Del Jones album Pierre. I can't not vote for it. One of those that always finds it's place into my stereo, if I'm throwing a party and people need to get down and boogie a bit. Also quite nice accompanied by a little space tobacco and some female friends now that I think of itApprove

Thumbs Up

Official reissue by the band themselves,  an early Seventies harmonic progressive / psych rock band from the USA, who made this excellent album. Long instrumental tracks with keyboard and guitar mixing psych with progressive styles in a fragile ethereal manner.

Formed in Canton, Ohio by Chris Wintrip during the early 1970's. The band went through many incarnations through the years, but will probably be best remembered for their debut album in 1973 titled "Paper Winged Dreams. Features extended instrumental organ/guitar passages, or as is said elsewhere 'long instrumental tracks with keyboard and guitar mixing psych with progressive styles in a fragile ethereal manner.

“Suite In Five Movements” is a complex composition in five movements which features some nice solo vocals complimented by intermingled harmonies; lyrics dominate the music but there's some nice guitar work and counter-pointing vocals; overall well worth investigation.

Rather irresistible melodic prog-artrock LP with a light, airy feel throughout. The band belongs at the dreamy Moody Blues and Camel end of the prog spectrum, with flawless vocal harmonies, long classical-inspired keyboard excursions and plenty of superior guitar interplay.'
