Yeah, I'd put them in the same bracket as, coincidentally, Chicago; nice, slighty soft rock/poppish sounding. Not my favourite kind of music, but certainly not bad either. Both are bands I would like to investigate further. Still only have that Chicago album, the Transit Authority one. Would like to get some more, eventually.

their debut was on my short list.. along with Remain in Light..

too late now.. but after Raff played that earlier today.. I would have made the hard choice to remove something to make room for it.. can't have Discipline without the mothership of the sound and style of that era KC.. and not have the Talking Heads.  My mistake there

And you'd be dead right too, both meld the pop/rock with the jazz. I tend to really like poppy stuff with a wide jazz harmony, so naturally these two bands are right up my alley.

Hmmm, maybe move straight to II when you wanna try some new Chicago, as it's fairly similar to the first. I'd say my favourite out of the ones I've heard would be VII due to the ripper fusion tracks on side 1 and some real strong poppier highlights that follow. Their double albums tend to be pretty inconsistent though (haven't heard III yet). Steely Dan on the other hand are one of the most consistent bands ever IMO, and you can't go wrong with any of their 70's output, though I'd put Can't Buy a Thrill, Katy Lied and Aja as my top 3.

Next stop - CHICAGO VII. This is the album fully displaying their technical musicianship, truly in Prog-Fusion mode, as well as some excellent accessible material.
Also Live In Japan should knock yer sox off. Great band.
