I was a bit surprised to find no topics on Sting. As a highly popular and many-sided musician he deserves to be discussed here. Do some prog listeners think somewhat negatively of him - and if so, why?To me, Sting has always been among my favourite pop artists. Naturally I also like The Police (especially the last two albums), and from Sting's solo discography I prefer the earliest albums: The Dream of the Blue Turtles (1985), Nothing Like the Sun (1987) and The Soul Cages (1991). Ten Summoner's Tales (1993) and Mercury Falling (1996) are also pretty good, but my interest towards the later output is frankly not as strong. I could borrow 57th & 9th (2016) from library, but I have no big expectations of it.
Besides his pop/rock career he has recorded the lute-centred music of John Dowland (Songs from the Labyrinth, 2006) and traditional / folk music (If on a Winter's Night, 2009). The Last Ship (2013), a musical theatre piece about dockworkers, is not exactly pop/rock either. So, what's your relationship with Sting's music?

Solo I only enjoy the double live jazzy from '86 with Marsalis & Omar Hakim but certainly it's my fault because personally I don't like the guy and have not followed his career closely - maybe you could point me any other album on the same vein as the above ? (never liked Police much)

I love Sting's solo output through Ten Summoner's Tales. I like Mercury Falling and Brand New Day but not nearly as much as what came before. He pretty much lost me with Sacred Love.

Massively talented individual with many sides to his music.
Saw The Police at Reading in 1979 although I wasn't really a big fan at the time. I loved the above mentioned "The Last Ship" and have enjoyed a few of his album tracks in the past. I also caught him live in Sydney back in 1986 before Dominic Miller joined the band and it was a bit of a wierd show, being essentially a band without a guitarist. Sting did a bit of guitar work in that show but it was all just kind of strummy, filler type stuff. Superb acoustic version of Roxanne for the encore with just himself and a nylon strung acoustic. One of my all time Sting favourites was his cover of 'Little Wing' with that superbly disjointed big guitar solo in the middle.. Edited by flyingveepixie - November 05 2018 at 08:09 |

I like Sting a lot. Especially the stuff with The Police & the first two solo albums. (Nothing like the Sun is one of my all time favorite albums)
Always thought he did a great job of blending different musical styles (rock, reggae, jazz, Latin, world music...) |

Sting's first album, The Dream of the Blue Turtles, is pretty jazzy. Hakim and Marsalis play on it. The live album you mention contains several songs off of Blue Turtles

To the extent of Dream of the Blue Turtles, I don't think so. Although, I haven't heard any of his newer original material. His second album, Nothing Like The Sun, contain some jazz elements but not as much as Blue Turtles. Marsalis plays on that album as well as a couple other artists known for jazz. |

I like him as a musician and as practisioner of bass. I am happy to have seen him live, i like hes sound on the bass, not a bassplayers bassplayer like Bruce or Entwzitle but on the pedigry just below. He got ++for having a highly personalised sound and identity ass a bass player and an ear for nice airy bass-lines. "Wrapped Around Your Finger" is the most fantastic composition of Stings carear.

I loved the Blue Turtles and the tour was great, with one of the best lineups of jazz musicians in a pop setting. And then things got progressively thin with weaker material and a less impressive band. By the time Soul Cages came out he had become blah and uninspired. Not a big fan. |

Don't care for him at all. The only Police stuff I like is the really rough early recordings on the "Message in a Box - The Complete Recordings" box set.

Regatta de Blanc was OK I suppose. |

Thin, sometimes strained sounding voice. Never sat well with me.
Competent and occasionally interesting bassist, but certainly no Lee/Ox/JPJ/Harris either. Actually, as a musician, after the Police breakup, I was much more appreciative of the other members of the group, Stuart Copland who plays a more interesting drum kit, and Andy Summers, who has shown his chops on guitar and as a composer across additional genres.

![]() I quite like the Police, especially the title song off Regatta de Blanc, and even wore a Synchronicity t-shirt in grade 8 cause I thought it was cool, but I haven't explored his material outside of the Police. And I wasn't too impressed with him in Dune. |

Decent writer and bass player...I enjoyed The Police for the most part and Sting's first 2 solo albums are pretty good imho....beyond that his later stuff gets a bit boring.
