They are special....takes a lot to perk my cynical ears and they have the spark.   Kind of a cross between "Celebrity Skin" era Hole and and the Stooges. Good punkish rock but with a knack for LA sheen and humor.

Nice! I'm not a fanatic either, but I have their box set, so I get access to any Priest album anytime.  I love those full sets in the mini sleeves for a decent price.

Bjork - Gling-Glo: Bjork does jazz in Icelandic. There's an exuberance going on here, and that plus the language (though the last couple are in English) make this a pleasant listen.

Kate Bush - Aerial: Some reaally cool parts like that jazzy Pi song and "Nocturn" with its groove, but it also feels like a slog at times. Very "mom-ish" for lack of a better word. I don't know; I like moms quite a bit so I'm not sure what's wrong with me.

Steely Dan - Countdown to Ecstasy: For whatever reason, when I'm in the mood for the Dan, I tend to veer towards the first two albums. I was in the mood for something familiar.

Weyes Blood - The Innocents: Stranger than her later albums, with "Some Winters" being particularly weird yet beautiful. Fairly raw recording, but I'm cool with it.

Alice Cooper - Trash: Every song is about girls and sex. Glam rock but with creepy troll vocals instead of the poofy sleazebag variety. I picture Alice and Rock Island era Ian Anderson hanging out together chasing teenage girls.

Alice Cooper - Raise Your Fist and Yell: Less glammy, more metal (still of the "hair" variety). Nothing special, but at least the lyrics are more of a rebellious nature than the "tramps crawling across the penthouse floor" stuff.

Alice Cooper - Lace & Whisky: Maybe it's because of the last two albums, but this album was such a breath of fresh air in comparison. The opener was a real treat to my ears. He certainly sang better back then, regardless of his condition. The Elvis-impersonation number was surprisingly fun.

Traffic | Last Exit — some good singles like Withering Tree and Medicated Goo. Otherwise a half-assed closet cleaning on the label’s part, after the original band broke up.

Ut Gret | Recent Fossils (disc 1) — Keeping Kentucky weird. Disc 1 of a 3 disc set of (respectively) Gamelan-based instrumentals, group improvisations, and a cover of Terry Riley’s “In C” (all 60 minutes of it). Challenging but rewarding and a treat for RIO/Avant fans.

Ultimate Spinach | Behold and See — wonderful proto-prog psych album. Still love it as much as the first time I heard it.

Amen Dunes | Freedom — most recent album from introspective psych pop guy. I think my best description is that it sounds like what an American version of Marc Bolan might sound like if he were recording today and focused on melancholic songs.

Crazy World of Arthur Brown | Strangelands — better than I remember. A “lost 2nd album” that didn’t get released until much later. It’s a bridge between the 1st album and his Kingdom Come band. All it really lacks is a bit more production and structure (its supposed structure as a four-part “suite” is not that convincing), and it would be a pretty dang good album. Strangely, there’s about 35 minutes of bonus tracks by a related band called Rustic Hinge that doesn’t even have Arthur Brown in it. They sound a lot like Beefheart circa “Trout Mask” sans vocals. One song sounds like a near copy of “Hair Pie”. Cool albeit derivative.

Crazy World of Arthur Brown | s/t — the legendary album with Fire on it. Never understood the fervor over that song, though I guess I can imagine it sounding pretty wild on Top of the Pops in 1968.

Ghost | In Stormy Nights — what an album. Wow. I think this is their last, and they seem to pull all their strengths together here. Boldly enough, they jump right into a 28 minute freeform freakout on track 2, and it’s evocative and dynamic.

Ghost | Turn On, Tune In, Free Tibet — not quite as good but close. Has a 30 minute track which upon close examination is just a string of edited jams stitched together. Still good and even great in spots. And the shorter songs, quiet and loud, are uniformly good.

MX-80 Sound | Hard Attack — Indiana band of gnarly instrumentalists fronted by a charming smartass on sax and spoken vocals. If you focus on the music you can be impressed by tricky rhythms and expert guitar work, and if you focus on the words you’ll laugh at the topics and how they’re handled and delivered. Fun.

Plastic Bertrand | Greatest Hits — Belgian new wave star whose biggest hit was a punk parody with nonsense lyrics in French (Ca Plane Pour Moi). The rest of these hits are so corny but I can’t help but love them.

AC/DC | Highway to Hell — Beating Around the Bush! Oh Well!

The Guess Who | #10 — superb album from a superb band. I posted this on FB last night in a music group and got in a long conversation with Dave Willey (Thinking Plague, Hamster Theatre) who says its one of his favorite albums. We geeked out over all the early 70s Guess Who albums for a while, and he even mentioned he remembered me from having reviewed Hamster Theatre’s first album and having written a feature on Thinking Plague some 20-odd years ago. Wow.

John Cale | Fear — One of John’s finest outings, though there are many I still haven’t heard.

Beating Around the Bush gets me every time too, Steve. Such a jumpin' album.

Katrina and the Waves - same
Tea Dance - 1920s-40s vintage party mix

That Katrina album was a solid pop album. Remember having it on vinyl.

Silver Apples | s/t
Silver Apples | Contact —this stuff is so far ahead of its time. And it’s pretty good to listen to, as well

Jandek | Gainesville Monday — new release of 2008 concert. Not sure about this one. Putting a non-musician on bass is not a great idea. Better to put him on guitar.

Spirit | Sea Dream (unreleased late-era material) — really nice stuff! Randy California after the classic period of 1968-1970 is an acquired taste, and his 1990s demos would seem to be quadruply so. But these demos are pretty well fleshed out and totally charming; not prog at all, but that’s ok

Manfred Mann | The EP Collection — early anthology of this cool 60s band I’m just starting to get into

Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti | Worn Copy - my favorite album by my favorite artist of all time. Yeah.

Blue Oyster Cult | Fire of Unknown Origin — i usually skip 2 songs in the middle but otherwise tbis is flawless

Frank Zappa | Lumpy Money (disc 1) — so happy to come across a copy of this in the wild.

The Knife | Shaking the Habitual — the electronica album that blew my mind

Captain Sensible | Revolution Now — former member of The Damned goes DIY solo and produces a quality psych album on his own. The catch is it’s 1989 and his technology is at least 5 years old. But those songs are fantastic and the Captain is a charming man

Klaus Schulze | Dune — chosen to cool me out on headphones at work. Dig the crazy strings.

Spirit | Twelve Dreams of Dr Sardonicus — shoulda been the next Sgt Pepper

The Smiths | Hatful of Hollow — reliving hs memories. these feel like the definitive versions to me

Alan Parsons Project | I Robot — Dark Side of the Moon part 2. Amazing

Carla Bley | Escalator Over the Hill — insane. Just listened to side2 tonight.

Bjork | Post — the Bjork album that kicked my ass

One of the reasons I have some issues with Louder than Bombs is that the versions of songs on Hatful of Hollow are better, especially "Back to the Old House". I can't listen to that song without Marr's beautiful acoustic unaccompanied guitar playing. The Louder than Bombs version annoys me to no end.

Kansas - Point of Know Return: Like Foreigner going full-prog, though better than that sounds. I really like this album despite the name. I know I'm returning at a certain point! Surprised they didn't call the second to last tune "Knowbody's Home". That would work.

Weyes Blood - Front Row Seat to Earth: Going with my wife to see her at the end of the month. Probably one of my only shows for the year; coordinating babysitting and the payout is such a drag. This is my favorite album of hers. The video for "Do You Need My Love" rules, and "Can't go Home" is so gorgeous.

This week so far:
Agitation Free - Malesch (So beautifully disjointed.)
Cedith - Dawn of Man
Soft Machine - Third (I can never recall a single note off it but when I'm in the mood, it's always fantastic.)
Miist - All The Useless Spinning
Yōkaļ - Yōkaļ
Aquaserge - Laisse Ēa Źtre
Handwrist - Tribulation
Casiopea - Casiopea (After all that talk on the forum, I really had to give it yet another spin.)
Masayoshi Takanaka - The Rainbow Goblins (Some parts can sound so much like Camel, like a Funky Snow Goose.)
Samuel Cadima - Outros Horizontes (It's been a while since I heard myself :P)

Alice Cooper - From the Inside: Some of Elton John's crew are involved, and it shows. Lots of piano. It makes the lyrical tales of life in a sanitarium sort of a bizarre clash of styles, including Alice's vocals which are often in sneer mode.

Alice Cooper - Flush the Fashion: Influenced by The Cars, there's a strong new-wave element but it's also a lot more rockin than FtI. I wasn't into it at first, but then I noticed how wild, funny and sarcastic the lyrics were and got into it.

Possessed - Revelations of Oblivion: Band reforms after 30 years featuring one original member in a wheelchair, and puts this out. I'm really surprised how good this is; the riffs are wild and all over the fretboard (this is not an open E-chord abuse deal) and I dig the crazy old salty dog vocals.

Mika Nakashima - Real:  Not her best, with too many ballads, but there's rockers and other stuff as well. I do appreciate how there seems to be more appreciation for variety musically in Japan. Her voice is still gold though.

The Style Council | The Singular Adventures of the Style Council — after acquuring all the original albums on vinyl, I decided getting their greatest hits on a CD was a good move. Cool white soul that’s aged well.

The Residents | The Mole Show Live in Holland — has the advantage of the edginess a live performance can give, even when it’s mostly synths at this point. Penn Jillette (of Penn & Teller fame) acts as the MC, adding a more personal touch

Spirit | Spirit of ‘76 — something mystical and spiritual (no pun intended) about this album. It creeps up on you gradually. Maybe the most unassuming, humble double album by a “guitar god” you could imagine

Spirit | The Original Potato Land — double CD release featuring the unreleased 1973 version and the questionably modernized 1981 version. Weird stoned concept album with a sketchy storyline but mostly good songs, including the godlike “Turn to the Right” (also represented by a previously unreleased alternate version of that song I like even more!)

Jandek | Los Angeles Friday — recent double live set. Whew. I’m always curious to see where he’s going but he does test his fans’ patience. This is a puzzling one, maybe it’ll grow on me (others have).

Spirit | Future Games — pretty strange for a Spirit record too, though very low-key as always. Why all the Star Trek references?

2 Foot Flame | s/t — avant rock supergroup with Jean Smith (Mecca Normal), Peter Jefferies (This Kind of Punishment, solo works) and Michael Morley (The Dead C). Bought this decades ago after hearing a track on college radio; coincidentally I had just become a Peter Jefferies fan after hearing one of his solo tracks on the same radio station. Many years later I decided to look into Morley’s band, and now The Dead C are a big favorite too.

Can | Delay 1968 — just another great Can record. Could listen to them all day long.

Moody Blues | In Search of the Lost Chord
Moody Blues | On the Threshold of a Dream — I will never tire of the Moodies. They’ve been part of my diet since I was like 5.

Lynyrd Skynyrd | Gold & Platinum — the original Skynyrd with Ronnie was a special band. I wish people didn’t always associate them with redneck/racist tendencies. Ronnie’s lyrics tell another story. Them riffs, too. Just good 70s rock.

McDonald & Giles | s/t — I’ve realized I listen to this album far more often than any King Crimson album. And I dig Crimson. Do I actually prefer it to Larks and Red? I don’t know about that, but I gotta wonder.

The Fall | The Complete Peel Sessions (discs 5 & 6) — 24 Peel Sessions across 28 years (1978-2004) with 4 songs each makes a hell of an overview of The Fall’s impossibly large discography. I’ve been a fan since the 80s and there’s still quite a few albums I’ve never heard or owned. But they had a Thing, and they did that Thing better than anyone else could.

Agree about Ronnie and the boys. I could say some more on that, but I'm going to muzzle myself.

Last night, an old friend popped over for some partying and tunes. One of those guys I can actually listen to music with, without him having to talk the whole time over it. He appreciates music rather than considering it background. Had a blast, although my body is not handling the sacraments as well as it did when we were running hard at age 22LOL

BOC
BOC - Tyranny
Heart - Live '76
Lots of single "hey check this out" selections pulled from the shelf.
