That's a rather ignorant comment, no offence. I assume you have not listened to much of the Beatles? I find most people who consider them merely a 'pop' band just aren't familiar with what they were really about. Sure they have plenty of catchy pop tunes which I happen to like very much, but look closer and you will find some very innovative and extremely well written music. Not even close to the Spice girls......
I have one comment: the white album. Pretty experimental, with a revolution nine in combination with Helter Skelter, by example.

Aha! I'm happy now (silly of me...of course they're progressive)
And Jesus said unto John, "come forth and receive eternal life..."

Quote I feel very sad. You can't have everything, but my favourite band was not on the list...

Uriah Heep

Don't be sad Rob, I usedto considered them my favorite Rock band, but now I consider them my all time favorite Progressive Metal band, and that's the reason why I believe they weren't included, most people consider them progressive (as I do).

The Beatles are to rock what Shakespeare is to the English language. It is ignorant to dismiss them. If you don't like them now, listen to them until you do. You will discover their brilliance soon enough.

That being said, here are some of my faves:
The Beatles
The Velvet Underground
King Crimson
Tom Waits

Thats right....Barry Manilow.

But if you watch him perform it's more funny than romantic. His facial expression is hilarious!

1.Beatles - Because I believe without them we wouldn't have prog, metal, or many other genres (I think Helter Skelter is responsible for metal influences.)

2. Black Sabbath

3. Cream

4. The Who

5. Bob Dylan

The Beatles

The Who

Led Zeppelin

Steely Dan

The Eagles

Being a Liverpudlian, the fabs will always be number 1

When I was at school back in the 70s, the big divide was always between the Who and Led Zeppelin. I loved both, and still do, but it's the Who every time for me. My other half prefers Zeppelin - we're still arguing about that one after 8 years together.

'Like so many of you
I've got my doubts about how much to contribute
to the already rich among us...'

Robert Wyatt, Gloria Gloom
