Here's Christian Vander giving it his "all" in two songs:

Watching while most appreciating a sunset in the moment need not diminish all the glorious sunsets I have observed before. It can be much like that with music for me.

If you have never heard of the "The Loved Ones' the Australian group from the '60s and their amazing lead vocalist the (late) Gerry Humphrey's; then please listen to this.
The song.....
Ever Lovin' Man from 1966 no less. Still the greatest vocal performance on record that I have ever heard....and a great song to boot. It was a hit in Oz at the time.

^ It's new to me I think, and that is really something. Excellent. I would think I would remember it if I heard it, and it does seem to take me back to a particular time while living in Australia decades after the song came out, but I am fairly confident that that is my mind playing tricks on me after reading your message. Great post.

That “Ever Lovin Man” track leaped to mind for me as well.

Otis is a good call, but I would have thought it would have been the opening of Stoah. :p

I suppose for me it would have to be things like Adult Themes For Voice by Mike Patton, or the Demetrio Stratos' albums for voice.

"Stoah" for sure too, it's the Darth Vander of Hitler impressions. I love Demetrio Stratos, and that's a good one posted in this thread. When I think about That TV Otis performance, I put myself with the audience, various who must be thinking, "What the f' is this." I love Magma, and find that very entertaining, but it makes me cringe in embarrassment. But if those who are performing aren't embarrassed, I shouldn't be either (I'm mostly embarrassed for the non Christian Vander performers in that song rather than for CV himself).

There are quite a few who are often/ usually out there or have unusual vocal stylings with their vocals, such as Diamanda Galás, Klaus Nomi, Captain Beefheart, Tom Waits, Tiny Tim, or David Surkamp of Pavlov's Dog who sounds like a cross between Geddy Lee and Edith Piaf, and qvarious of my favourite female Japanese singers like Phew (Hiromi Moritani) and Haco of After Dinner. Peter Hammill can go very over-the-top, methinks.

By the way, I'm mostly thinking about people's favourite performers' performances that are out there by their usual standards rather than just odd vocalists. Vander's pretty out there often when he sings, and some would rather he stay behind the drum kit, but some of his performances are odder than others.

EDIT: I'd like to hear about various performances by vocalists who generally sound normal when they sing (or the band usually seems very different but they have an unusual vocal performance), but then do something really unusual vocally, especially if it seems out-of-character and took you by surprise. It may be a live performance where things went wrong, or deliberate. It maybe down to drugs or psychosis, having a bad day, or an artistic statement of some kind. It may be misguided or a stroke of brilliance, or perhaps due to a stroke without the brilliance. When I first found that "Otis" performance, it surprised me despite having already heard several Magma albums at the time and knowing that it was an unusual band by most standards.

Out there vocals begin and end with Dokaka. Unfortunately, I can't find his version of KCs Fracture or Ramblin Man.

The whole Royal Opera House show with Matmos and Zeena Perkins is is the best performance ever on film/DVD. (And I know I can only say this about a single one!) Music rarely makes me cry but I can never get through this without tears.

Love Richie Havens on Steve Hackett's "Icarus Ascending,"

everything by Humble Grumble leader, Gabor Varos.

Can't overlook Courtney Swain's amazing tool. Her take on the American anthem "Sunshine" and "Human" are two of the most brilliant, amazing, unsettling performances--studio or live--that I've ever heard.
