Ahhh I may be a minority on this but I consider it to be one of the best albums ever, it is just magical, beautiful...perfect. It's one of those albums that you have a special bond with, on the one hand it's pastoral with french horn and on the other hand it's raw with distortions, and of course it is very progressive, keeps the listener on his toes and always interesting.

This is actually the only album I have and although it's good it never really blew me away. But I just gotta say about three years ago I've been to Seattle for more than a month because of work and I was looking for live concerts, Black Mountain was the only thing close to prog that I could find in the area and man was that a freakin' show! everything sounded so good, suddenly that album sounded much much better (well dah).

I know what you mean, it happens also with Talk Talk Spirit Of Eden, very very dynamic. I was trying to play this freakin album to my friends outdoors and it was almost impossible because of this.

David: I saw Elder around when ROAFW was released and had a blast but when I spun the record I was hugely disappointed with the production. There are no dynamics, you get 60 minutes of double guitar riffs in your face and everything else that tries to cut through the mix. Only the last track seems to give some rest to your ears. The new one is much better in that aspect.

I don't if I prefer IV from Black Mountain because I knew Sinoia Caves first and saw them on that tour or it's really better. The other day I was able to make a close enough guitar patch for "Mothers of The Sun". It's basically an octave pedal with an octave fuzz. I must have played that riff for 3 hours at least LOL

I believe "Amarok" is a speakers album. Those stabs and loud moments are still efective but don't pierce your eardrums.

Maxophone - Maxophone (I particularly enjoyed "Mercanti Di Pazzie" this time. Those harmonies and chord progressions are so mysterious.)
La Curva di Lesmo - La Curva di Lesmo (The whole albums is not so great but I think the second track is one of the best modern RPI songs I heard)
Renaissance - Prologue ("Rajah Khan" is such a rad song.)
Bit - Bit
The Segue - Holograms
Emtidi - Saat
Surya Kris Peters - O Jardim Sagrado (I haven't been keeping up with his solo work but I couldn't ignore that Portuguese title. It has some fine modular synth work but used more on a song-based level, which is uncommon.)
Grant Green - The Main Attraction (I never heard his 70's output before. It follows the Funk trend of the time but it's more laidback than usual.)
Todd Terje - It's Album Time
FEM - Mutazione
Ingranaggi Della Valle - Warm Spaced Blue
Herbie Hancock - Head Hunters
Dio - Holy Diver (I've been diving more into Hard Rock/Metal lately. It sounds so damn good played through 6'' monitor speakers and active subwoofer Cool)
Toy Matinee - Toy Matinee
Steven Wilson - To The Bone (It was a more forgiving spin then the previous although my opinion on it didn't change much)
Die Wilde Jagd - Haut (Really good stuff David! It's very textural, which isn't usual in that style. That female singer sounded like a German Maggie Reilly Tongue)

Yes!!!! Catapilla
Man I love that band Their sophomore album is a clearcut masterpiece in my book. I always think of the ride I got from a friend who drove me from the airport in Copenhagen (Kastrup) and straight on into the heart of the city - pitch black night, heavy almost torrential rain and then this album on full blast mixing beautifully with the kaleidoscopic shimmers of neon light we got whilst looking out into what genuinely looked like Copenhagen by night..at sea.

Gotta say, I think that Black Mountain album is my fave of theirs. It used to be In The Future (mostly for nostalgic reasons), but I just love the way they’ve evolved as musicians. I mean there were no guitar solos on any of the earlier albums..at least not like you get on IV..and I love that. It’s a colourful album compared to their earlier work..not as “one-noted” if that makes any sort of sense...and I tend to prefer bands’ earlier more raw efforts actually

Yesterday:
Jethro Tull - Songs From The Wood
Serge Gainsbourg - Histoire de Melody Nelson (One of those albums I NEVER tire of)
Ozric Tentacles - Erpland (Perhaps THE album I’d recommend newcomers to the band)
Ozric Tentacles - Jurrasic Shift (or this)
DJ Shadow - Endtroducing (Basically a great big scissors-adventure with a myriad of samples of old soul, funk and hip hop, interspersed with drums and beats...and it works! Especially with that old school turntable aura about it that really shines through)
Simple Minds - New Gold Dream ( ever get to one of those albums/cds that just need around 50% more volume to get to a normal listening level? This is one of those.)
Mike Oldfield - Amarok (Apropos the above..though not entirely because Amarok..is well different It’s one of those albums where it’s impossible NOT to fiddle around with the volume at least a couple of times during the track. One of the reasons is very straightforward because of the section with the LOUD high pitched noises that scare the faeces out of me every time I hear it (can’t prepare for this no matter what!), but more importantly: the whole album seems to be mixed with a somewhat big difference between the quietest sounds and the loudest ones (dynamic range). This effectively means that when I think I am at a nice listening volume..the music then suddenly picks up and introduces some rock passages and I’m literally jumping out of my seat in order to turn it down )
Dr. John - The Sun, Moon & Herbs (I’m not entirely sure why this album isn’t more popular..at least around the peeps who own and dig Gris-Gris. This music just sounds so..’real’. It’s natural and snaky - almost writhing like a blues snake, but yeah it sounds so genuinely ‘real’)
Jethro Tull - A (I kinda like the synths...but can definitely picture a whole horde of less than sympathetic fans of the band who had grown out their beards for years and also started to dress like troubadours..feeling somewhat let down by the arrival of the zippy sounds of Captain Kirk’s starfleet )

You know, i have admit that until you mentioned it, that lp completely passed me by!Embarrassed Ive read (yours and others) review here and went straight on YouTube and am listening to it now!!!! WOW how have I missed this album??ConfusedOuch Certainly musically its miles out there beyond 'Magic brother..' and 'Continental Circus' and sounds (in sections) much more advanced than 'Camembert..' and has a rawness that Gong lost a bit after Camembert.. mind you some of the more obscure live bootlegs etc with long improvised work-outs show they could still do it.. but not really there till Planet Gong Floating Free Anarchy.. Ive been looking to see if I can find a physical copy of this and have drawn a complete blank.. has it been re-issued at any time recently?? I bet original copies fetch a frightening amount!!

WOW again.. i'm genuinely shocked that ive not heard this beforeShockedShocked but that's the REAL joy of this forum, you can ALWAYS find something new by recommendation or research.

You've made my day!! i'm a very happy man! Many thanks xxxBig smileBig smile

P.S I think it would be very hard to plough straight furrows with this on in the tractor!!Wink

I’m always on about this album over the forum so it warms my heart to see that someone picked up on the rec. It is a wonderful album, and no sadly it has not been re-released to my knowledge...which is both criminal and somewhat odd imo. I mean, there are quite a few of these specialised labels that go out of their way to find some of the most obscure prog/psych known to man...and when you then think about the players involved it makes even less sense
Oh well we can always hope. I vividly remember feeling the exact same about another French band called Plat Du Jour who made one selftitled album back in 1977, a masterpiece no less..yet lo and behold if it didn’t get a re-release after a couple of very very positive reviews over PA

After a bit more research I found out that it was re-released 1n 1977 on the same label and catalogue numbers and the few copies I found on Discogs were these and were either ropey condition or massively over priced! But then I found its been re-issued by Replica records which specialize in French Prog and Avant garde re-issues and on their site it says its in stock for 20 Euros + P&P so I shall certainly be ordering that!!!Big smileBig smileBig smile

That is quite simply brilliant
Truth be told I never did a search
Now that I do know it’s available and doesn’t cost a small fortune, I hope more people like yourself who are into Gong/Hillage will latch onto it..because well it is perhaps one of the finest Gong albums (with a French vocalist mind you) that nobody seems to know about!

Thanks Sagi!Big smile I'm a big fan of Here & Now; they are another band I used to bump into a lot on the free festival ans squat party scene in the UK in the 80's and have seen lots of times in lots of different line-ups.. Give and Take is fantastic as is Fantasy Shift, Theatre and of course with Daevid Allen on Floating AnarchyClap
Now I'm jealous Big smile

That's the thing  ]  that messed your post.

Cheers Sagi, I really am a dimwit with even basic computer technology, particularly since the kids all left home!LOL

There were some great times and some great bands, H&N, Ozrics included and lots that didn't get to record any material but it was pretty rough and grimy at times.. i'm a country boy and didn't last long in the squat/ travelling fraternity and got out whilst the going was good.. a few friends weren't so luckyCry

Listening to Floating Anarchy now & lovin' it! I managed to get a new copy of the Dashiell Hedayat lp on the French 'Replica' label who specialize in French Prog and Avant Garde re-issues so really chuffed!Clap

I'm
not a fan of DT but I have the box set with most of their albums
(bought it really cheap :P) and I thought Six Degrees was one of the
better albums.

All this
conversation about the Ozrics is making me sad for not having much from
them in my collection, despite really liking the band. Ooh, I remembered I had a photo of the awesome gig I attended uploaded here Cool There's one synth missing on the right, the Novation died just before the performance but they managed fine without it. At least it wasn't the Roland D-50 with the original 90's sounds Big smile

This week:
Colour Haze - We Are (I didn't know they released a new album last year. They have a full-time keyboard player now and it was definitely a good move.)
Zanov - Open Worlds
Elder - Omens (I seem to be a minority about them. I thought it was the most interesting album they released yet. Most Stoner fans are allergic to synths LOL)
Rainbow - Rising
Salada de Frutas - Crime Perfeito (Another cool example of Prog meets New Wave.)
Frédéric Chopin - Piano Concerto no.1
Vinyl Dial - The Flight of the Crown Hawk
Toy Matinee - Toy Matinee (I found it through Guy Pratt's Youtube channel and I was quite impressed by it, from a time in Pop music I'm rarely impressed by (late 80's/early 90's))

Viva Boma is a killer album
I totally forgot that you indeed have seen the Ozrics live, lucky b*****d!
I listened to Elder here the other day..Floating World I believe..was a really good spin, although I still have a few reservations concerning the production choices. There are some rather nifty and quite beautiful guitar solos that are way too low in the mix to really be appreciated for what they are...and I’m not all that fond of the somewhat anodyne drum sound..too clean for the music imho.
Yet I still really dug the album
Pretty interested in hearing the new Omen after your description...but then again when have I ever not been excited about adding electronics/synths to bands I already like? Exactly

I’ve been spinning Die Wilde Jagd pretty much incessantly ever since I got my hands on the debut, which I think you’d dig big time....and with the release of the new Haut which basically consists of four 10 min. pieces that both give nods to the old a la Cluster, Neu!, LA Düsseldorf, Kraftwerk and Harmonia..but also manages to sound rather original and contemporary. I’m not at all surprised they were picked up by Bureau B, which also specialises in re-releasing old school Krautrock and Berliner Schule
One of these days I’ll get them on board the PA vessel that’s for sure. I think they’d fit in nicely in electronic

This one I may get made fun of for. Gentlemen, I give you what I think is my ultimate, all time guilty pleasure album...

Prince—1999. ( say what you will, but the song arrangements are incredible on this album. Has some progressive dance electronic musings to. I give this album a 10 for creativity. Pretty crazy this came out in 1982 and I think it will surprise a lot of listeners. I recently bought the remastered boxset and it is really amazing. Great content and Bernie Grundman did a fantastic job remastering the album. )

You guys can make fun of me now. Lol.
Gimmie my headphones now!!! 🎧🤣

Syd Barrett | Barrett — Love this album. It’s the dark winter of Syd’s mind.

Paul McCartney | Memory Almost Full — first listen and hey! Very good for a late McCartney album. No gimmicks, just Paul doing his thing. Impressed.

Japan | Gentlemen Take Polaroids - just really good synth-based art-rock. David Sylvian is a great singer too.

of Montreal | The Gay Parade — Athens-based psych-pop weirdo. This guy is part of that same Elephant thingamabob that Olivia Trmor Control and Neutral Pork Hostel are caught up in. A kaleidoscopic psych-pop manifesto.

Screaming Trees | Dust — just an incredible album. Track 2 was a big hit in the 90s but every track on this kills. Didn’t even know I was a fan. But I play this every couple of years and DAMN

Oysterhead | The Grand Pecking Order — Trey, Clay, and Stew. Eclecic? You bet. Enjoyable? In spots.

Gumball | Revolution on Ice - Don Fleming, an uncompromising alt-rock icon leading a fairly accessible early 90s manor label band that rocks pretty heartily. Such a release could have only happened in the early 90s.

The Cramps | Songs the Lord Taught Us — rockabilly trash rock that gets by on attitude. And it’s fun. Kinda sh*tty otherwise.

Dinosaur Jr. | You’re Living All Over Me — now we’re talkin’. This 1987 album created the whole melodic 90s sound.

Give and Take is fantastic as is Fantasy Shift, Theatre and of course with Daevid Allen on Floating AnarchyClap
