Its sort of been the unwritten rule over the years that reviews are accepted as there are those that get advanced copies. As long as the review indicates that the reviewer actually heard the material (as I suppose should be the case for all reviews). Myself, I received a couple different albums up to a month before release, I suspect because I was ordering other albums artist/label direct and they likely didn't want to deal with 2 different international shipments

Anyway, ratings without reviews do not enjoy the same liberty. This album along with the new Steve Wilson and Haken albums I scoured multiple times before the release date. I apparently wasn't vigilant enough on Kansas. The hilarious thing was the Haken album had numerous ratings that I had to delete multiple times before the release. Then 1 week after release it was still sitting at 0 ratings. LOL

^ Guess TenYearsAfter has got their album sample a couple of days before their latest album released.

Not sure about others' ratings though ...

But even then, it's still a guessing game.

this thread is in the reporting abuse section of the forum, so if you ask me, the usefulness of rating is not the place to discuss here Make a thread some place if you want to.

Although that's broadly true I'm not sure why there would be any good reason to abolish this facility. All you have to go on is how the rater interpreted the descriptions provided for each star rating. With a large enough sample size this can provide a reasonable indication if a PA member might enjoy the album. The 'ratings only review' was intended to make the site more inclusive i.e. to allow non English speakers to contribute. We can debate it's worth certainly but at least it does achieve that.

Wow ! I have indeed !! I know the drums sound rather flimsy on Morningrise (they sound a bit better on Orchid, surprisingly enough) but I did honestly already think your suggestions.

sorry to point it out, as much as I agree that an Opeth discussion is much needed (do you want me to start a thread or one of you can do it?), let's keep an eye on the rating abuse and report here Big smile

There is indeed no such thing as a 2 star or 1 star opeth albumWink and those 3 star ones are just barely 3 starsSmile
Well, the jury’s out on the latest - In Cauda Venenum (I need to listen more) and Watershed is too good for a 3, but I’m not sure for 4. But Morningrise, sheesh, that’s a 6 out of 5 for me. And I’m one of those who considers Opeth a Prog Metal band with Death Metal interjections, not the other way around (and I love me some Gorguts, Cannibal Corpse, Suffocation, Death, Atheist......all the complex ones).

However, it is hard to take seriously when almost all albums on the profile get either 5 or 1 star.

Is there any particular reasons why one can rate albums without writing a review?

I believe this was done so as not to discourage people who couldn't write in English all that well from visiting the site/contributing (as reviews have to be written in English).
