Of course not, it was a great way to start the party! Those songs were different but energy wise quite similar, though. I tried f.e. to bring in something groovy which is also energetic imo but in a different way. Anyway, I did enjoy this edition and discovered some great artists/bands. So thank you very much for this poll! ![]() Edited by Mila-13 - October 31 2021 at 03:07 |

I posted 4 different kind of songs, from different genres, I thought fun to listen to, catchy yet not simplistic in any way. Edited by Cristi - October 31 2021 at 07:48 |

You are disappointed, obviously. But you shouldn't be. There was still a wide music variety in this poll and you got some great feedback as well. It was actually not about your description of the topic in the first place, it's rather that you posted all your options straight away. That gave me the impression that you expected a certain type of rock music. And btw. there is also various dark stuff out there which is not necessarily loud, you see?

What was so hard to understand - energetic rocking performances from female musicians, vocals and/or instruments. This is what i said, simple as that. No worries, I'm going to think twice before I create another interactive poll, I might just ask Lorenzo to skip me altogether... ![]() Edited by Cristi - October 31 2021 at 02:14 |

I don't know but maybe a more open description of the topic would have helped to showcase the richness and diversity of women in rock music. I like all kind of rock genres but I'm not into current straight rock or metal which doesn't mean that I don't like loud and energetic stuff, quite the opposite. Punk and post-punk f.e. are among my favourite rock genres incl. various dark stuff which is not necessarily loud. ![]() Edited by Mila-13 - October 31 2021 at 02:15 |

My votes go to: The
Breeders: Cannonball (Mike) Pure girl power, founded by Pixies bassist
Kim Deal. I was not aware of this project of hers. That's all I really need to
say. Eskaton: Dagon (Greg) A French experimental jazz rock trio with a truly unique style, Paule Kleynnaert voc. and synth that comes into its own. Very interesting, makes me to want more! Imelda May: Johnny Got a Boom Boom (Malcom) A big name and a unique, musically diverse vocalist, here with a rockabilly style song, a genre that she is best known for. A refreshing contribution that I really enjoyed. I am a fan of acoustic, “handmade” music. ___________________________ Honorable mentions: Ustmamo: Tannomai (Lorenzo) One of my contenders from day one. Mike’s final choice, The Breeders as an all-female band won over Ustmamo, after all. Unfortunately we have only three votes. I’m really sorry about that! Heather Nova: Walk This World (Nickie) A big name, a British alt/folk rock singer-songwriter with a unique voice. ”Walk This World” is her signature song from her breakout album Oyster (1994). With a less known song she might have been a contender, though. Still Romeo Void remains my favourite of yours. New wave, post-punk would have contributed to the musical variety, besides that genre is right down my alley. Anna Calvi: Wish (Kees) Another big name and a great contribution to musical diversity (art/alt rock). Anna is an outstanding guitar player, no doubt about that but I’m less a fan of her vocal style. Maybe it's about the song itself or maybe it’s the live performance. I’m not sure. Go_A - SHUM (Lewian) An interesting contribution. In another context I would have considered them for votes but folcotronica is definitely not rock (maybe that's a narrow view?), besided I knew both the band and song. My favourite of yours was Annette Humpe (Ideal), an icon of the German punk and new wave era and beyond. Edited by Mila-13 - October 31 2021 at 01:20 |

Greg, my apologies, I misunderstood and didn't realize you did choose Eskaton. I will let my votes stand, however, as they do stay the same, in essence, in review of what was chosen. I wasn't looking at the poll itself at the end, just my notes.
That being said, tigerfeet, thank you so much for your thoughts on Heather Nova and also all the rest. I enjoy so much reading the reviews, for those who have time.

So, I have my top 3 pick for this poll. #1 First Prize goes to: Lee Aaron – “Watcha Do to My Body” I do love stereotypes if in good taste and this one was executed in a perfect way. #2 Runner Up Prize goes to: Courtney Barnett - History Eraser It is ironic that the title of this song is directly related to my #1 pick #3 Third Prize goes to: Arimea - The Circus – sums up my first 2 picks This poll was really really fun, and all the tracks picked were top class. It was hard to pick a top 3 as there were so many contenders, especially as some kept changing score as I listened more. Any one of the nominated tracks could have been in the top 3 but I do enjoy pushing my 'cant-make-my-mind-up' personality to make a definitive decision. 1. Heather Nova - Snicollete, the song had a great Groove with smooth vocals to start then a nice build and the song gets going. Very modern feel and not stuck in the classic rock genre. Very harmonious while still passionate and heart felt and the lyrics are gorgeous. It took a few listens and then it got more enjoyable and addictive. It was a 7+ but now the song has moved to an 8+ - so not sure what I am going to do for a vote as its tied. 8+ 2. Blood Ceremony - Cristi, the opening flute gave a false flag of what was to come which was a punk/rock
vibe. Loved the sound of the guitar. Vocal depth was warm and crunchy
at the same time. Nice overtone to the song as a whole and I really liked that it was
a sort of merged genre. Guitar sound is amazing. It also was 7+ but now an 8+ - not sure what's going on here (and I hate being so wishy-washy) 3. Eskaton – Logan, Wow! Lots of white noise and strange atmosphere and has a general psych feel – wondering what will be next with this song and dark foreboding future. Enjoyed the free style vocals mimicking the keyboard, nicely done. Rocking in a different way but certainly intense. Song evolves into more intense and complicated rhythm with the following along vocals. Once again, now as i am listening for about the 3rd or 4th time the song is becoming something i am now familiar with and it is more up my alley than I previously thought. This one is about patience and letting the song do its thing. It was a 7 initially but now an 8 as it could have been included as part of the sound track to The Wickerman. I liked that your choice was not the typical vocal entry. 4. Dead Sara – Geo, Hard driving rock intro and juicy vocals are straight to the point, clear and with lots of passion. Love it! Nice riff. Her voice fits perfectly with the sound and the distortion is spot on. Her voice almost breaks at points , right on the edge. High energy. 8 (but it may increase). 5. Ustmamo – Lorenzo, once again a very special nominee, with superb production and plenty of space in the over all sound. Vocals were a lightening strike straight to the heart and I enjoyed again a kind of punky garage rocking vibe. At first I didn't even recognize it was Italian and thought it was Scandinavian sort of like the the Ellipse song (Finnish) i was considering. both languages and similarly musical in their flow. Like an early 80’s vocals set with 90s rock band. Increased from a 7 to now a 7+ 6. Go-A Shum – Lewian, it was a cool choice to go for. I liked the electronic influence and also of course it was a Eurovision contender. Still she rocks out and the vocals are quite interesting. The vibe of the tune certainly has the Balkan Slavic kind of undertone with an almost far eastern influence – not sure !! Not a song I would normally listen to at all but it impressed me none the less. not traditional rock but still a good 7+ 7. Breeders – TCat this reminded me of Smash Mouth from the get go and something that I would generally gravitate towards immediately. Song builds slowly and Vocals are great! It is smooth for some time then it begins to get pretty intense. A fun and enjoyable 8 8. Courtney Barnett – Mila, this song has a modern feel and good production. I liked how it could verge on pretention but be humble and honest after all. I really got into this song and love her tone and the Aussie take on things. Lyrics were wonderful. I never heard or listened deliberately to her but will certainly be doing so. A wonderful 9 9. Anna Calvi – Suitkees, there are so many changes in texture here with both the band and the guitar and vocals intertwine as they weave about. Such calm and then some storms throughout the song and more so towards the middle to towards the end of the song. What a wild experience. Vocals alone were a close 10 since they retained raw energy, emotion and passion. 9 10. Arimea – Ronstein, was that a nine string guitar? I never had the pleasure of playing one but it looks quite hard if you do not have a wide and/or large hand. Impressive and powerful vocals and got my head nodding. The song is a masterpiece in so may ways. Operatic, passionate, free and wild, every time you listen to it, it provides something else. I will be 100% listening to more of this band in the future. 9 11. Lee Aaron – JD! What can you say when the first lyrics are “Whatcha Do To My Body”? I didn’t miss the 80s after they ended, but I do now! This one has such musical nostalgia and it possibly could sum up the rock scene of that decade. In my book absolutely a 10 out or 10 in every way. Power, energy, raw passion, the song a perfect gem, the guitars distorting immaculately, the drums pounding down the highway. And woo-ah ! Her growl !! A song I can listen to any day and in whatever mood. A non-complicated song but purely what it is. Rocking! 11 out of 10. |

MY PODIUM:
Eskaton: This mini-suite is a great song, maybe a masterpiece and I should put it on the top step of the podium but.... as often happens with prog songs, they have a longer duration than the others, they are more elaborate, they contain very different sound and mood moments, that is, they are richer and heterogeneous and this creates problems for me in comparison with the other suggestion because, for example, this song it is fantastic but not like an immediate rock song sung by women, it is fantastic for its composition that has few rock moments and female singing... I woudl say: often the prog songs are "superior" to the others because they are more complex and elaborate and thus correspond only partially to the theme of the poll, since they could also correspond to other themes for their different parts.... in short, I think I've made confusion, but in the end I give to Eskaton the Grand Critic's Prize ---- 1) Gold Medal - Anna Calvi: Rock song but in reality very little engaging and cheerful, it is indeed a very cryptic song, where the energy is all held back, it implodes instead of exploding, and this gives rise to a great tension, tension that is never released. In short, a classy song. 2) Silver Medal - Imelda May : I confess that I have a weak for rock and roll with the double bass, and this song got very "roll" and little "rock" rhythm that reminds me of Chuck Berry: a nice relaxation. 3) Bronze Medal: Heather Nova: This song is less rock than the others and perhaps one of the simplest, but a beautiful melody and the singer's voice is enough to make it very beautiful Honorable mentions: 4) Dead Sara - fantastic determination of the singer, heavy metal impetus, very engaging, to see in concert 5) Blood Cerimony 6) The Breeders Gran Public's Prize: Go_A - SHUM Synthetic song with a ola ending Edited by jamesbaldwin - October 30 2021 at 18:14 |

1. Eskaton - Dagon I will most likely be purchasing the album this comes from. Love it!
2. Dead Sara - Weatherman It looks like this one gets the majority of the votes, and it deserves it. 3. Imelda May - Johnny Got a Boom Boom I love this sort of stuff and it definitely rocks! Very infectious. Just boiling under: Courtney Barnett - History Eraser Blood Ceremony - Goodbye Gemini Heather Nova - Walk This World

Not sure whether my friend cristi meant me with that remark but for sure I still listen to rock music, and listening with open ears to try to find what's in a track often leads to success. Ultimately this poll again has some great stuff picked by people passionate about their music. And once more I end up with more than three votable ones. The Eskaton track is amazing and I didn't know it already, however it somehow feels unfair to me to vote for sophisticated RIO in a poll like this. Thanks for nominating it though, I've got to get that album (only have and know 4 Visions). Then some rock just works for me even though it surely uses many elements that can be found in many other songs - I just love the Courtney Barnett track, vote 1 goes there. Same comment holds for the Imelda May track, it's just so inescapably physical, dynamic, and cool, vote 2 there. And then the more or less obligatory vote for Lorenzo's often successful attempts to promote the music of my adopted home country - thanks to him I know much better how much goes on here musically not only in the golden prog past but also in the present! Ustmamo, vote 3! Just outside the top 3: Arimea, Blood Ceremony. Edited by Lewian - October 30 2021 at 05:36 |

I truly don't listen to much straight rock and never really have after things started to get more complex musically about the mid-60's. I did, however, see and hear plenty of rock and metal, especially during the 1970's and 1980's/1990's, both periods of when I was living in LA, the latter part while working in the music business. Perhaps, for me, it was the over-saturation with less innovation that made it less interesting. Which is not at all to say it doesn't have it's place. Every musician has to have a starting point, and for many, that is rock. For instance, I know for a fact that when Black Sabbath is rehearsing for a tour, they often warm up first by enjoying jamming together on jazz pieces. It just stands to reason that the longer you play music, the better you will get at it and likely will want to stretch out into more difficult material to play. I found a lot to enjoy here, certainly, as I have with the other genres we've tackled. And found some new music to explore, which, for me, is always a high point of these polls.

I wouldn't say it's still like the 70s, the metal community has plenty of women, but then again metal on PA is not popular, so the discussion ends here. ![]() This topic even proved some don't even listen to rock music TBH. I don't think it's the state of art of women in music.

What worries me a bit about the nominations (including my own, and I do realise that there are a few exceptions, some more suggested rather than nominated) is that the majority have a female singer but all or all but one of the instrumentalists are men. Actually that's not so much a worry about the nominations in particular but more about the state of the art when it comes to women in music. ![]() I'm toying around with the idea of doing a poll about female instrumentalists but I have serious doubts how much would be found, at least among the stuff we really love and that is not known to everyone. (I can bring in some more avantgarde electronic, no problem, but...

So, here we go. I went for the exciting, captivating, get-your-ass-from-the-couch and or original rocking/string-touching tracks... If it should be proggier than rockier I would go with Eskaton and if I would a bit more into nostalgia I would go with Lee Aaron (I heard a lot of that kind of material in the 80s), but in the end I vote for these (in order of appearance): - Dead Sara - Weatherman (love the energy and rage!) - Üstmamo - Tannomai (this one really works out well for me) - Go_A - Shum (exciting and original and damned captivating) It was a nice rocking playlist overall...
