I hope this good new to some of our listeners, LCR are playing repeats of some of the Alternative Alternative Shows through the university summer vacation period. This is partly in response to those who miss these the first time around and have written in asking where they could catch up.

Starting tonight, here is what you can hear in the 9pm BST slot on Thursdays night until the end of July:
6th July: Guitar Special 1 (original played on 2nd March 2023)
13th July: Jeff beck Tribute 1, (of 19th January 2023)
20th July: Guitar Special 2, (of  23rd march 2023)
27th July: Jeff Beck Tribute 2, (of 2nd February 2023)

I've been shocked by the number of musicians who have passed since Christmas, I regret to say at least one a week. So I decided to set aside the last show to many of those muscians' music, as a tribute to their lives and contributions to the world. The playlist is pretty self explanatory. I hope we'll be back in October. Have a great summer and see you soon.

The penultimate show before university term end next week.  As per normal, a mix of the old and new. Thanks go to Mark (lending me the Killing Joke and Molchat Doma albums), Malcolm Galloway (for the new Hats Off Gentlemen, Its Adequate release), and the guys at Unicorn Records (for Mystery's new album). Other older recordings by Donald Fagen, Laurie Anderson, 10cc, (the legendary) 64 Spoons, Fred Neil, King Crimson (featuring the late Keith Tippett), Chris Spedding's Sharks, Battles, Lung, Rainbow. There's two bands named The End, but that's where the similarity stops. Recently disinterred recording from the archives by: Jorma Kaukonen. Other new releases: The Circulating Sun, White Sun, Dave Matthews Band, Ben Folds, an previously unreleased Jeff Beck track, Alaskalaska. That's it or have I missed somebody?

Next Thursday (22nd June) the whole end of term show is devoted to musicians who have passed in the 12 months since the end of June 2022. It is just about recorded and will go out from 9pm to about 11.30pm next week.

Three shows to go before the end of the academic year here at Loughborough, starting with this Scandinavian Special. (Don't forget a monthly alternative show goes via the Album Zone). Apologies to any Danes and Buggy Wesseltoft, but here is wide selection from the Swedish, Norwegian and Finnish music scenes. Jan Garbarek playing medieval Norwegian folk music with folk archivist Agne Buen Garnas - one of my favorite ECM recordings. My two fab drum/keyboard combos: Mats Morgan and the Johansson Brothers. And I couldn't omitted Jonas Hellborg....A band rarely heard out of Sweden, Brickhouse doing some great rock. The delicious and the difficult to define, Samla Mammas Manna. Several artists resident in the Rune Grammofon Records stable. Excellent playing  and super voices. All in all, providing the usual, unusual mix of musics.

Tributes to Tina Turner, Andy Rouke and poet/lyricist Pete Brown.  New and old jazz: Herbie Hancock, Mastermind, Matthew Herbert. A couple by Gary Lucas (a NY Times' top 100 guitarist). Something from the 2023 remaster of Steely Dan's 'Countdown to Ecstasy'. The obscurer bands: The Pigeons, Tratenwald. Been around a long time: Family, Graham Nash, Yes, Joe Perry. More details below, then in person at 9pm BST tonight.  Next Thursday a Scandanavian Special is planned.

No change of mix but nearly all change wrt artists played. A show assembled before the news of Tina Turner an Pete Brown deaths were announced but a small tribute to Francis Monkman is included, with more from the late Ryuichi Sakamoto. Pleased to say that the music from Amazon Primer series, Daisy Jones & The Six has been released. New releases from indie labels include those by the musicians: Tratenwald, Eric Silverman, Nora Stanely/Benny Bock, Rob Moose. Indo jazz: Bela Fleck with Zakir Hussain. Jan Garbarek. Praxis. Barkman.  Prog: The Rome Pro(g)ject (with Steve Hackett), Marillion . And much more.

Thanks to Jack my producer for nudging me awake, and apologies for the late posting of this playlist. More from the new/old Jonas Hellborg album, and my fun album of the month from French band Ultrazook. Another tribute to the late Gordon Lightfoot and Ryuichi Sakamoto, (mention of Francis Monkman next week, in my almost weekly, I regret, obituary section). With Bowie reggae/dub covers appearing this month, reminder of Bowie doing covers of 60's UK pop. Family's Anyway has a 2023 make over. New jazz from Ghanian Peter Sonuah, Kamasi Washington's Dinner Party. The rest of the show features materials from deeper parts of the archives.

In the last few months, after decades of avoidance, come two albums that introduce reggae/dub treatments to David Bowie's music: the usual culprits, Easy Star All Stars and a new boy in the game, Ziggy Stardub. Checking out local charity shops come up with an exceedingly cheap CD of Jean Michel Jarre with guests, 'Electronica 1', Thursday night I give you Jarre and Anderson, (which Anderson is revealed below). Jazz related: Dinner Party, GoGo Penguin, Joe Deninzon & Strataspheerius, Jeff Richman, Jonas Hellborg (with Baker and Worrell), Allan Holdsworth, BST, Taj Mahal. Dominic Miller. A small tribute to the later Gordon Lightfoot, and more folk rock from Stills & Crosby, Jethro Tull. My wacky album of the month by Ultrazook. Then I give you Italian prog (covers band Conqueror), obscure rock (T2), plus Howlin' Wolf, Brian Eno, Stevie Winwood, The Zombies, Bohannon. A first off: Scots piper Brigdhe Chaimbeul. Finally but not least, Ana Patan plays some fine rock , with Jonas Hellborg producing and bassing.

The Easter break gave me a chance to select some more guitarists who have done some special music. This week's show has music largely by artists I hadn't played in the two previous specials, with the exception of Allan Holdsworth, Mike Keneally and John McLaughlin. Listening to the playback of this show, it struck me there is perhaps the making of a fourth special... Stefan Grossman, Leslie West, the blues Kings are missing to date, for instance. What do you think?

Hello

Back after the Easter break with a show with the usual mix of old and new. Also paying tribute to musicians who have recently died, including Robin Lumley and Ray Shulman. Greatly enjoying a number of the albums released by the French label Dur Et Doux (out of Lyon), two great examples this week from a.P.A.t.T. and Ultrazook. Jazz end of the spectrum from John Zorn, GoGo Penguin, Charlie Parker, MultiTraction Orchestra. Blues from Paul Jones, Joe Bonamassa. Susanna Hoofs continues with her new album to cover other musicians music most interestingly. Prog from Porcupine Tree Ron Yuval (touring the UK in July). And of course we raid the archives.

Hi all.

I'm providing playlists for both tonight and next Thursday's shows, reason: we are away next Thursday (in glorious Pembrokeshire, Mike) and that show had to be prerecorded. Next Thursday's show will be the last until after the Easter break and the second of my guitar specials - I don't believe there is a guitarist featured here that I played in the first special.
Tonight's show includes a brief tribute to Wayne Shorter. Otherwise the older recordings include those by Steve Vai, Mike Keneally (also his latest), John Lee Hooker, Kansas, Steve Stills, Buddy Miles and Siouxsie & The Banshees (with Robert Smith). Music from the back catalogue is also found on Steven Wilson latest project: 'Intrigue: Progressive Sounds of Alternative Music 1979-89'... a 4 CD set which is almost prog band free.   Then there is the new, with a number of new artists (at least to me)....

Apologies. What went out earlier today is the probable playlist for next week's show for the 2nd February: unusually I'm ahead of myself. INSTEAD FOR TOMORROW NIGHT. A tribute to David Crosby. Other older music from the James Band, (UK's ) Nirvana, Jefferson Airplane and Harry Chapin. Fusion and/or jazz of various sorts by Orchestra Gold, Joys Union Group, Mette Henriette, Marcus Strickland, Reuter Motzer & Grohowski. Electronica abounds and in addition: The Young Gods (with my favorite interpretation of Terry Riley's In C), Mahogany Frog. And much more.

Thanks to everybody who told me they liked the first Jeff Beck Special. I hope you like this selection, and tomorrow's show is the last concentration of Jeff Beck Music heard here for a while. I've found some music from his albums not played last time, plus a tune I've only come across this once. Guests with Jeff include Joss Stone, Imogen Heap, Nicolas Meier (who's solo albums have creating a stir over the last decade) and Seal. Otherwise you'll find Jeff guesting on albums by Cozy Powell (who's ''Tilt'' album included the tune 'The Loner', referencing Mr Beck), Stanley Clarke, Honeydrippers, Dion and (amazingly) Badger. Also three covers by Steve Vai, Paul Gilbert and Niacin.

The unexpected annoucement last Wednesday of the untimely death of Jeff Beck, shock me. As one of my long time top 5 guitarists (all of whom are innovative in different ways), I felt the need to give over a whole programme (or two), to this innovative electric guitarist's music, to show his history and various of those innovations. I've sneaked in a sort cover by members of one of Beck's former bands, otherwise every track will be played by maestro Jeff Beck. A second tribute show will be in a couple of weeks time.

A very happy new year to all my regular listeners and the less so regulars. This show was put together before the sad news that Jeff Beck died unexpectedly. So about to put a whole programme of his music for next week's show celebrating the pioneering playing of Mr Beck, who I managed to see live twice, once with the Truth  line-up and the second time here at Loughborough as part of Beck Bogart & Appice (a memorable night, with Peter Bank's Flash as support).

However, tonight's music: a mix of new and old. Electronica from Steve Lacy, Neu!, Robeone. Experimental jazz from Lionel Loueke treated by Gilles Peterson, Frank Zappa and others. Snarky Puppy's Michael League in support of David Crosby; also Anglo folk from Coracle. And more....as writ here:
