TAMARISK The tamarisk is an ancient African tree mentioned in the Bible, representing hope and life and symbolizing new beginnings. The tamarisk tree is also noted for its ability to survive in harsh conditions and is a symbol of strength and resilience, just like Tamarisk the band, who survived the first wave of British Neo Prog in the early 1980's and made a remarkable comeback forty years later with a new album, titled "Suspended Animation", appropriately enough. Their 2012 album, "Frozen in Time" is just what it says on the label too, a compilation harking back to Tamarisk's nascent beginnings in the early 1980's. Tamarisk aren't afraid to risk political controversy either, as their song "Total Coverage (The Battle of Bean Field)" details the events surrounding the massive clash between the police and New Age travellers at the ancient monument of Stonehenge in Wiltshire in the summer of 1985, which still remains shrouded in controversy to this day. In fact, it's one of the most shocking events in British political history since we first discovered that Lib-Dem leader Paddy Pantsdown had had an extra-marital affair! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Edited by Psychedelic Paul - July 09 2023 at 03:36 |

STRANGERS ON A TRAIN It's that man again. Yes, keyboard wizard Clive Nolan is back with another amazing band to entertain and delight. Strangers on a Train also includes Tracy Hitchings (of Landmarq) and Karl Groom (of Threshold), so what more could you ask for in a Neo Prog band!?? The name of the band is a reference to the classic Hitchcock thriller of 1951, although I'm glad to say no one ends up getting murdered in the band, so there's no blood on the tracks. If it's Action, Suspense & Drama you're looking for though, "The Key" trilogy of rolling stock is running on full locomotive power and with Clive Nolan involved, you can bet your bottom dollar there are no passengers on this train. The "trilogy" has the unusual distinction of being only two albums. A third album was planned and may still arrive at the station some time in the future - which will surely be a long train a-running - but sadly, it won't include Tracy Hitchings. ![]() ![]() ![]() |

SONIC TAPESTRY Oh, what a tangled web we weave..... Why not explore the warp and the weft of Sonic Tapestry as they take us on a musical journey of discovery. Definitely not an album for the cloth-eared. ![]() ![]() Edited by Psychedelic Paul - July 07 2023 at 00:22 |

SOLSTICE A band of tree-hugging neo-pagan proggers from the New Town of Milton Keynes in central England. Milton Keynes is a town-planner's dream-come-true, made famous (or notorious) for its concrete cows and seemingly endless traffic circles, which may or may not have inspired storyteller Jon 'Christian' Anderson's Roundabout. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Edited by Psychedelic Paul - July 06 2023 at 23:59 |

SHADOWLAND The grand wizard of prog strikes again! The omnipresent Clive Nolan is a man of many bands, having been a regular presence in Pendragon, Arena, Strangers on a Train, Caamora and Casino. In the magical realm of Neo Prog, you just know without a shadow of a doubt that any band Clive Nolan is involved with will be a surefire winner. Shadowland are no exception, so set phasers to stun for some outstanding keyboard wizardry from Clive as he delivers another masterclass of technical ecstasy and perfection ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

KEN SENIOR I was working in the lab late one night, When my eyes beheld an eerie sight.... It was none other than Ken Senior, one of the last great English eccentrics. Ken's a little bit different to the rest of us mere mortals, as you'll see in the endearing video below, where he performs his own unique version of the Monster Mash for Halloween. It was a graveyard smash, originally recorded by Bobby 'Boris' Pickett & the Crypt Kickers way back in 1962. Sadly, Bobby 'Boris' Pickett is no longer with us, having passed away in 2007, but you can still listen to him from beyond the grave, so to speak. ![]() ![]() ![]() Edited by Psychedelic Paul - July 03 2023 at 09:34 |

I had you in mind whilst listening to Sanguine Hum this morning. I remember you mentioning previously that you're a fan of theirs.

SANGUINE HUM And now for something completely different.... Sanguine Hum might be a strange name for band, but not nearly as strange as their previous incarnation as Antique Seeking Nuns. Their bizarre band name is merely a reflection of their offbeat music though, as Sanguine Hum are unlike any Neo Prog band you've heard before, or will ever hear again. Just in case you were wondering, Sanguine Hum is a cryptic reference to the four humours (or temperaments) of proto-psychological theory, first hypothesized by the ancient Greek physician, Hippocrates (the Greek scholar who gave us the Hippocratic Oath in medicine). He postulated that there are four fundamental personality types. Namely, sanguine (optimistic), choleric (grumpy), melancholic (sad), and phlegmatic (calm). But how does this apply to music, you may well ask? Well, if you're sanguine - as I am - then you may listen to an entire discography, hoping against hope that an artist's albums will get better as they go along, which they often do, especially in the case of Opeth and Therion. Alternatively, if you're choleric, then you're most likely a grumpy prog fan who's notoriously hard to please, but at the same time, someone who has endlessly diverse tastes in music, liking anything from Allan Holdsworth to Steely Dan to Dream Theater. Thirdly, if someone is melancholic in their musical tastes, then I'm guessing they'd be a fan of Leonard Cohen, Tom Waits, maybe the Cocteau Twins, or even Current 93. Lastly, we come to a phlegmatic personality, where some calming and reflective Post Rock may be in order, or even better, the deep and meaningful music of Sanguine Hum! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() An ancient Greek scholar - or it could be Robert John Godfrey of The Enid. ![]() Edited by Psychedelic Paul - July 02 2023 at 12:07 |

STEVE ROTHERY This town, is coming like a ghost town..... This is the long-awaited debut album from Marillion guitarist Steve Rothery. The Ghosts of Pripyat was inspired by the abandoned ghost town of Pripyat in the Ukraine, which is a stone's throw from the site of the world's worst nuclear disaster at Chernobyl in 1986. It's rumoured there's still enough deadly radiation around to make you glow in the dark like a Ready Brek kid if you spend any length of time there. You may not have heard of the long-abandoned Clune Park Estate though, which has been described as Scotland's Chernobyl, and where just eight residents remain. You can still buy a flat there for a paltry £7,000, but as Lloyd Grossman would say, who would want to live in a place like that!?? Let's take a look now as we go Through the Keyhole. ![]() ![]() Edited by Psychedelic Paul - July 01 2023 at 02:28 |

ROADS TO DAMASCUS Have you ever had a Road to Damascus moment in the world of prog which leads to a dramatic change of attitude? That happened to me when I listened to all of Marillion's albums for the first time and realised they're a much better band than I'd ever given them credit for. Local radio personality Alan Partridge had his Road to Damascus moment too when he realised that having a number one fan isn't necessarily a good thing - especially if he turns out to be a "mentalist". ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

RIVERSEA A nautical Neo Prog duo for your delectation and delight. Local radio personality Alan Partridge seems to be in a spot of hot water again too when he's all at sea with a group of angry local farmers whilst filming a promotional video for Hamilton's Water Breaks, in the episode "Watership Alan". Alan Partridge now hosts Mid-Morning Matters on BBC Radio Norwich, because mid-morning matters! ![]() ![]() ![]() Edited by Psychedelic Paul - June 30 2023 at 04:53 |

Neo Prog Britannia RETREAT FROM MOSCOW An album that was over forty years in the making from a band that's been around since the dawning of Neo Prog in the early 1980's. The name of the band is a reference to Napoleon's disastrous Retreat from Moscow in October 1812, but could also be a reference to Nazi Germany's first defeat in the winter campaign of 1941-1942. Either way, it's best not to mention "The War" now, especially if you're a hotel owner with a party of German guests. ![]() ![]() Edited by Psychedelic Paul - June 29 2023 at 06:39 |

REGENT An album for somnambulists everywhere... Why not book into the regency suite for some high-class proggy entertainment. Just make sure that any adult entertainment is listed on your hotel bill under "Miscellaneous Services", or you could end up having an embarrassing encounter with the nice ladies on reception when it comes time to settle the bill - just like Radio Norwich DJ Alan Partridge below, who denied any knowledge of having watched "Bangkok Chick Boys". ![]() Edited by Psychedelic Paul - June 30 2023 at 04:51 |

RAIN Rain on the way, brighter later... You can have any color you like, so long as it's Cerulean Blue, one of the most exotic-sounding shades on the Dulux color chart, and also one of the most exotic-sounding Symphonic Neo Prog albums you're ever likely to hear this side of the prog universe. ![]() ![]() Edited by Psychedelic Paul - October 12 2023 at 02:11 |

THE QUEST Do You Believe in the awesome power of prog to Change lives for the better? Well, I surely do, and the power and the glory of The Quest will give you more of an adrenaline rush than a bungee jump! The uplifting and exuberant music of The Quest is very reminiscent of Arena Rock legends, ASIA, so you'll know what to expect. Admittedly, the two albums by The Quest don't quite reach the heights of the album The Quest by YES, although I realise that's not exactly the greatest of recommendations. Only Time Will Tell which album is best, although I probably lost at least half my audience already when I mentioned that much-maligned YES album again. ![]() ![]() ![]() Edited by Psychedelic Paul - June 27 2023 at 12:54 |

QUASAR Gone but not forgotten are Quasar, a Neo Prog band who shone briefly but brightly like a Fire in the Sky during the 1980's with a debut album that wouldn't be discovered (at least by me) until forty years later in Memories of Times Yet to Be, but is that really the same band in 2009 or is it another case of the "Trigger's Broom" paradox? Don't call Trigger stoopid, but he thought the Gettysburg address was where Lincoln lived. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Don't Call Me Stoopid! Edited by Psychedelic Paul - June 27 2023 at 04:02 |
