Hi

Regulars would have noticed that I have been going through a 'psychedelic spell' recently. In part this came about sorting music and other sounds, to discover if a radio tribute could be made to those pioneers of pirate and underground radio of the 60's. I think I've succeeded with just about enough radio voices to fill 2 -2hr shows, while there is a huge amount of popular music from the period available - especially that loosely labelled psychedelic. So tonight Part 1 (Part 2 in 2 weeks time) - you're only hear my voice briefly at each other the show - and hopefully you will enjoy the music, while only recognising only a small fraction of it. The list below reveals what tunes are played, and where the other voices are sourced. Be surprised that Jefferson Arplane, Cream, Electric Prunes and especially The Who, sold out to the man and advertised products. Nothing in the show is later than 1971.

Many thanks to Antoine Fafard for providing me with a copy of his forth coming album - 2 tunes coming up, including one featured on Facebook. Thanks to Ana Patan too for providing the music she has written and performed for a play about the remarkable Mexican painter Freda Kahlo, (Ana says if anybody fancies a free download of a track let her know through me). Still got the psychedelic buzz, so one of the earliest UK psychedlic singles from folkie Mick Softley (1966), also other tunes from the period by Denny Laine, Quick Silver Messenger Service, Larry Young and there's some post-Syd Floyd. World from Ogun Afrobeat, Ojos De Brujo (both Spanish bands) - and a French band in Barcelona I like to play, O'o. And to finish something from the remastered and extended Gentle Giant album originally issued in 1977. Plus lots more.

Further exploration of the new Panzerballett album, eg. attacking Vivaldi as never heard before. Remembering the late guitar innovator Allan Holdsworth. Ethopian jazz fusion, with a cover of Black Sabbath sung in which language? Two different Luther Dickinsons, one leading a jazz rock band and the other in the country style. Weirdness from Fruit LoOops, KMFDM, Jack O'Clock.... and Magma. A couple of excellent compilations from Cherry Red Records coming over the next few week - the first a tribute to the bands who played at Middle Earth, the London psychedelic club of the late 60's. World music from Femi Kuti, Malo and Airto. Bluesy stuff by Robin Trower and Warren Haynes. Plus much more....

Hello again, I hope you can join me tonight. I've been putting together a tribute to the underground and pirate radio stations of the late sixties with music of the period - we may broadcast it from LCR...... thus I've been in a psychedelic mood the last few weeks. Hence, music from Skip Spence, Terry Reid, Led Zeppelin (also seen Becoming Led Zeppelin movie recently), Lothar & The Hand People and some early Alan Hull. I met and talked with one of our off campus listeners recently, who asked if we could stream the ALT2 Shows. Unfortunately that would stretch our present technical capacity. However, after a chat with our chief engineer it was agreed to play a few shows again, which were were originally broadcast in January this year, each going out over the next three Thursday evenings respectively:

First I have to inform you that the UK moved to BST last Sunday, ie our clocks went 1 hr forward, (does that mean EST is now 4hr behind, for the next week?).

Celebrating the musical talent of Jess Colin Young and Dave Arbus who both died towards the end of March, and a further reminder of David Johansen. Two of the godfathers of nu-fusion, Miles Davis and Bugge Wesseltoft illustrating the range of this sub genre. Blues from Stan Webb and Baby Huey (discovered in the archives). Something from Kimara Sajn forthcoming album. Various forms of prog from Porcupine Tree, Big Big Train, Thank You Scientists, Imperial Age. And then much more: folk, Afrobeat, pop-rock etc.

Interesting new jazz from Yazz Ahmed, Adam Baldych (violin) -- which reminds me more lead violin featured tonight than recently. West coast rock 70's style from Steve Miller Band and Jay Ferguson (ex Spirit, Jo Jo Gunne). More from Joe Deninzon. European mainland music from 17 Hippies, Tiro & Tarantula and others. Pay what you like music offered by 7-D Media at their Bandcamp page at the moment - a couple of tracks played.  Folk from Will Stratton, Amanda DeBoer Bartlett and Seth Lakeman. Then we have electronica, psychedelia and other freak music, plus another search and discoveries in the archives. Starts in 5 hours time. Hello again,

Celebrating the late Roy Ayres, with a handful of his music . Belated discovery of Little Axe (on my part) here in blues mode. Single from the forthcoming Hedwig Mollastad album plus fellow Norwegians in the form of Motorpsycho. Lurking in the archives : Guggenheim (who's vocalist had a hit with The Temperance Seven) and then there is Crazy Mabel. The Doors albums undergo more remastering for the 2025 reissuing on vinyl. Trombonist Dennis Rollins provides music and a programme ID... saw him perform two Sunday ago!! New prog from Hats Off Gentlemen Its Adequate, and  Jethro Tull. Then there is the too often forgotten Kevin Gilbert. And one more reference at this time: check out 7D Media's Bandcamp page for 'a pay what you wan't sampler of 33 tracks - I did.

Music fro the 60's and 70's now installed in the station, and the ALT2 Show programming is back to picking music (at least this week), released in the last 50 years, most of it in the last year. Thanks to Malcolm of Hats Off Gentlemen, Its Adequate for a copy of the band's latest and most excellent album. A couple tracks where you find the fusing of middle eastern rhythms with either jazz or western rock, respectively Yazz Ahmed and Nadah El Shadzy. A couple of us are compiling a 70's music library for LCR, and I thought we had gathered enough variety to pull a two hour ALT2 Show together. So tonight a few familiar tunes and hopefully a lot of obscurity, touching on a lot of different genres: hard rock, punk, fusion, folk, soul, blues, electronica, prog, from several different countries, been in the charts, in a few instances musicians who had performed at Loughborough. Following on from last week's show remembering the late Mike Ratledge, ex. Soft Machine and collaborator with  modern classicist Sir Karl Jenkins, more avant garde and more Canterbury Scene musicians, including Soft Machine, Brian & Hugh Hopper, (including variants on possibly Hugh Hopper's most cover song), Robert Wyatt and the Hadouk Quartet. Guitarist Phil Manzanera, who said once he wanted to sound like Ratledge, is in there somewhere. A little quiz: who recorded each of three different tunes with the same name? And then so much extra. The only time I saw Mike Ratledge with the Softs was at the first 'Pop Proms' at the Royal Albert Hall, the show that was recorded and ended up as the bonus album with the remastered 'Third' CD. Since hearing the band first played and then regularly aired by John Peel his BBC Radio 1 Show in 1968-9, here was the sound of a dynamic band exploring an English form of rock gradually fusing with  jazz, to produce that distinctive Canterbury jazz sound of the 70's. (Their first album I bought on vinyl as a US import: the one with an interesting revolve as part of the  sleeve). Mike Ratledge's drove that sound with his keyboards, initially that unique Lowrey sound. It was a pleasure to be involved with a tiny bit of the research and then proof reading galleys of the Soft Machine biography 'Out-Bloody-Rageous'. So it was a great shock to hear of his death a few weeks ago, and no way was I going not going to celebrate Mike Ratledge's music on the show. So 4 pieces where he is to the fore, ranging from a legit  bootleg recording (c/o Cuneiform Records) made at the Middle Earth Club in 1966 to a piece recorded nearly ten years later (c/o MoonJune Records).  In keeping with the avant garde Machine, there are other, more recent cutting edge sounds: Numuen, Sunna Marget, Eyed Jay, Reichenhal,l Teho Teardo & Blixa Bargeld, and the Legendary Pink Dots: thus the most far out show I've done in some time. Plus some straighter sounds.

First an apology for not posting the last two playlists, a certain broadband company (starts with V) have been extremely difficult to get at over here in the UK. After two weeks (yes)  it was fixed this morning, following on from yesterday when it was discovered that a fibre optic cable (mine) had been severed from its connector in a box down the road from my home, by careless contractors. GGGGRRRRRRR.

So what have we got for you tonight? The Rolling Stones in baroque pop form in care of Brian Jones (?). Which reminds me I've been picking individual musicians and bands whose names start with R, such as Rush to the obscure Routes. (Last week was largely devoted to those starting with B btw). However, we remember Marianne Faithfull who died recently. New music from  Eyed Jay, Loudon Wainwright III with anglophile tunes, modern glam rocker Gyasi, . Recent nu jazz from Robocobra and Dennis Rollins Velocity Trio (coming to the area in next 6 weeks). And as I said lots of Rs. 

As I write, the death of probably my favorite keyboardist of the 60's and 70's, Mike Ratledge MA has been reported. So next week plenty of Soft Machine from 1966 to late 70's to remind us Mike's playing.

Continuing where I left off last week, so more of Dyan, Church Chords, Michael Du Albuquerque (a reissue with a super line up of session musicians).  Bedroom rock of Texan Nolan Potter. Anybody see University Challenge last Monday: Imperial College were monster, achieving a huge score, but falling flat with the music question, confusing King Crimson with Led Zeppelin. So not forgetting those not with us: Nick Drake, Allan Holdsworth, Les Butler, Kevin Gilbert, Jeff Beck. That includes trombonist/reggae specialist Rico Rodrequez, who I've only been introduced to his music. Erik Satie's music gets another electronic make over....this was preceded circa 1970, by the album 'The Velvet Gentleman'. Ethopian jazz anybody? Then much much more.

Happy new year everybody. The first ALT2 Show of 2025 arrives tonight. Remembering master tabla palyer, Zakir Hussain who died just before Christmas. I must comment that that several tracks tonight are by artists who have some remarkable session musicians backing them, e.g Michael duAlbequerque (Ollie Halsall, Alan Skidmore, the Shadow's Brian Bennett and many other notables), Zakir Hussain, Jack Bruce, Collin Walcott, Kevin Gilbert (backing group includes Sheryl Crowe and Toss Panos), 21st Century Schizoid Band (Krimson alumni). Good to hear Bryan MacLean's version of 'Alone Again Or', admittedly recorded 4-5 years after he left Love. Malcolm Galloway and Aphex Twin's s new solo albums of electronica. Challenging left  ield music from Church Chords, Antistatic, Dyan, Abacaxi. High speed Blue Oyster Cult. And more proggie stuff from Coheed & Cambria, Hawkwind, Oceansize.

A vaguely Christmassy show tonight-- as ever in the hands of Panzerballett plus an appearance from Ben Fold. Remembering the late Quincy Jones. Two Flocks appear....  Lovely weirdness from Asa Horvitz, using AI ....  I don't understand how it works. Other jazz from Ezra Collective (who you may recall won an important music prize last year), Ann Butterss (yes two Ss). A 70's British rock band under the wing of Jeff Beck, Upp (yes two Ps). An almost inevitable obscure 60's psychedelia tune. More obscurity from the (James Welsh) Gypsy Band. But there's plenty of new: Christie Moore, Francisco, Matt McBane, Stick In The Wheel (sounding very east end of London) and Fretless. And there's something from Kimara Sajn (aka +1) retrospective.

I would like to wish you a merry Christmas and celebrate the New Year well. We will be back early In January 2025.

Thanks to Rune Grammofon's London office I now have a copy of Elephant9 & Terje Rypdal's live recording. Another experiment: playing extracts of Kevin Gilbert's rock opera 'Shaming of the True'... feedback please, 'Quadrophenia' might be next??  Really enjoying Joni Mitchell's 6 CD set 'Archives Volume 4', particularly for a handful of alternative takes with different musicians than found on her original studios albums of the 70's. Weird from Asa Horvitz, different sort of weird by the Everly Pregnant Brothers of Sheffield, Yorkshire. Obscure 60's pop by Rain. Early metally rock by Edgar Broughton Band and May Blitz. More from UK guitar whiz Mark Wingfield and gentle jazz from Snarky Puppy's Laurance & League. And as ever much more................... .

Celebrating the music of the late Phil Leash. Thanks to Leonardo of MoonJune records for sending albums by the much praised British guitarist Mark Wingfield and also Beledo. Christmas is coming (?) with release of live recordings, some made half a century ago, including CSNY. Further raiding  of Todd Rundgren's back catalogue. Another three tracks with a common title, but with uncommon music and lyrics. Folk ancient and modern, e.g. Tom Paxton and Stick In The Wheel (now touring the UK). Further exploration of the lesser known brass rock bands. And much more from the new releases. And then there is the old and often obscure.

Hello Everybody

The mix of new with old is back again. A long anticipated 'Joni Mitchell Archives (Vol 4)' has arrived and I will be sampling in the weeks to come, so at last a chance to sample the rehearsal recordings of 'Mingus', with musicians not heard on the final album. Nu fusion from Americo-Aussie band Uncle Moe's Space Ranch. Something in Welsh! Other new material for Gren Bartley, Julie Square, etc..Continuing with the reminder that the Moog synth appeared 60 years ago. The second half hour of the show is ''what have these track got in common''... alas no prizes? And why a couple of weeks ago, did I forget the Who did a spoof albums with real ads: making up for it tonight. With the 50th Anniversary of King Crimson's influential 'Red' album, a singular but long  track from it to finish the show.
