A-Z of Space Rock

AGAMEMNON      Agamemnon was a hero of Greek mythology in the Trojan Wars and Agamemnon the band are one-time heroes of Swiss prog, having released just one amazing album in 1981 and then just as quickly disappeared - presumably to go and fight a war somewhere. Agamemnon have sometimes been compared to the German bands Minotaurus and Epidaurus (no, me neither), but this band are no prog dinosaurs! No, this is wonderful, melodic Symphonic Prog at its best (although bizarrely, they're categorised as Psychedelic/Space Rock here on PA). Anyway, I hope you enjoy the album, and if you do, go tell the Spartans, and go tell all of your friends too. Smile

5 stars 1981: Agamemnon - Agamemnon Parts I & II - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JZ3a0ZLQozU

A-Z of Space Rock

AUTO DRIVE SYSTEM       An album recorded by three Italian teenagers who were too young to drive,  being as they were still at school at the time. This is their First Work. Well, it beats doing homework. Tongue

A-Z of Space Rock

ANONIMA SOUND LTD.     For Italian proggers who like Living in the Past, Anonima Sound Ltd. are Italy's answer to Jethro Tull, and all of the lyrics are in English too. This Was meant to be a Space Rock blog, but Red Tape Machine (listed as Psychedelic/Space Rock here on PA) is an album that's light years away from the pounding Space Rock of Hawkwind. There are 57 varieties of Space Rock though, and for the Benefit of Italian prog fans, this is an album that still Stands Up to scrutiny over half a century later. Thumbs Up

A-Z of Space Rock

ANALOGY      A quirky Italo-German Psychedelic Rock band, and if you're wondering who Analogy are most analogous to, they should appeal to fans of Catherine Ribeiro + Alpes and especially Curved Air, bearing in mind Sonja Kristina's dark velvet tones strongly resemble that of Analogy's lovely lead singer Jutta Nienhaus, although Jutta's loveliness has nothing to do with her being portrayed stark naked on the album cover, honestly. Tongue

A-Z of Space Rock

AME SON      Bananas! Ame Son were a French band with more than a passing resemblance to the sound of early Gong, so it won't surprise you to learn two of Ame Son's members featured on Daevid Allen's Banana Moon album. Smile

ALICE      Living in the Past with Alice, who doesn't live here any more. French band Alice are as far removed from Space Rock as Alpha Centauri, but if Jethro Tull were French, then this is what they would sound like. Smile

A-Z of Space Rock

ALGARNAS TRADGARD      A Swedish Krautrock band held in high regard, being at the vanguard of the "Kraut School" of Scandinavian Space Rock. Algarnas Tradgard's tripped-out tribute to hallucinogenic hippiedom is more exotic than a spicy curry cooked up by Madhur Jaffrey. The release of their long-awaited second album was Delayed by 27 years, hence the title. Smile

Carl Sagan's Cosmos was brilliant and IMO, better than the modern remake. I think he said in it that all wars in history have been fought for a piece of land on this tiny grain and then showed it on the screen. I wasn't aware of this satirical take on him :p.
Talking of the Far East Family Band, the related Far Out Nihonjin album is one of my all-time favourite Space Rock albums, regardless of the uninspiring album cover. Smile

The ever-expanding Space Rock universe is filled with billions and billions of stars and galaxies, all moving immutably through the interstellar stuff, and should I ever manage to explore the entire Space Rock universe (very unlikely in one lifetime), then I'll eventually arrive back at my starting point. Meanwhile, in the real universe, Riemannian geometry posits that four-dimensional spacetime is curved, meaning the universe is finite in volume, but at the same time endless with no boundary beyond which you cannot go. For instance, if a space traveller were to travel billions and billions of light years through the four-dimensional universe (again unlikely) they would eventually arrive back at their starting point from the direction opposite to that in which they set out, just as a spacecraft travelling at 17,500 m.p.h. in orbit around planet Earth in three dimensions arrives back at its starting point every 90 minutes. Here's Professor Carl Sagan (Johnny Carson) to explain more. Smile

A-Z of Space Rock

AKASHA     Heavy Mellotron Magic! Akasha is a rare, one-off album that emerged from the Norwegian underground - quite literally - having been recorded in a bomb shelter underneath a hotel in a remote region of Norway north of the Arctic Circle, which maybe goes someway towards explaining the album's echoey, dark and foreboding atmosphere. A lost classic, well-worth adding to your Space Rock collection - if you can af-fjord it. Smile
