The Game
This brings together noted British actors Jason Watkins and Robson Greene. Nothing to do with the David Fincher movie, this is a recently retired police officer (played by Watkins) lamenting the one that got away (yes that old chestnut) then someone moves in opposite who seems not to be totally on the level (Greene's character). It's very plot heavy but Watkins is as great as ever and keeps it fimrly on the rails. If you want an easy 4 episode weekend binge then this could suit you although be warned it does have some particularly gory scenes.

Daredevil: Born Again  Daredevil was easily the best of the Marvel TV Shows from the recent past (Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Iron Fist, Luke Cage) and this reboot is certainly welcome. It also carries a more adult theme and the fight scenes are some of the best and goriest I've seen. Great acting too from Charlie Cox (Daredevil/Matt Murdock) and Vincent D'Onofrio (Wilson Fisk). The storyline is great too with lots of twists and turns and the whole thing just seems more grown up and the grimy NY setting is just perfect for this. 9.5/10

Reunion
This is an innovative 4 part drama from the BBC set in Sheffield and employing the pool of talent within the deaf community including actors Matthew Gurney and Rose Ayling-Ellis. Much of it's signed by the actors themselves (but not all and not by a person in the corner of the screen). Fully hearing enabled actors Ann-Marie Duff and Lara Peake learnt sign language to play their characters. The story is a man out of prison trying to reconnect with his estranged daughter. This is full on stuff and the most intense drama I've watched since Chernobyl.

The biggest fail here is the dropped ball of not doing a concurrent backstory with the "First Nine" bikers who founded the motorcycle club a generation earlier. They are mentioned so often and in brief images that the producers cue our interest big time, and then they just let it die on the vine. Animal Kingdom did it so well with Ellen Barkin's backstory, and Sons of Anarchy could have included that backstory by using some of the time given to senseless shootouts and drug deals for the umpteenth time. Still, it was a ton of fun to watch.

I've not watched SOA but did watch all of Animal Kingdom. It seemed to me they only did the Ellen Barkin backstory because she had left the show ( I presume her choice) so in order to keep it on the rails it still needed her presence to knit it together. Yep I did find it interesting but I tend to think it was a convience to squeeze an extra season out of it rather than something that was planned all along. I could be wrong though..

We finished se03 of White Lotus last night. An unpopular opinion maybe but this was my favourite of the 3 seasons so far.

The Penguin

Picking up a week after the events in 2022's The Batman, this HBO series puts us in the festering gutters of Gotham with an unrecognizable Colin Farrell in the lead trying to fight his way back up the crime syndicate food chain with some help from a young street kid (the excellent Rhenzy Feliz) and the daughter of a mob family recently released from Arkham Asylum.   More a mafia crime story than a supervillain action-drama, The Penguin works and delivers the cold hard goods.

Reacher Season 3
Lee Childs character is so well realised it's hard to think of any actor other than Alan Ritchson who would have been better in it ( ''The Rock'' maybe??!). This keeps up the standard of the earlier seasons and other than great fight scenes (and extreme brutial violience) does also have a heart. One of its very best points is that it allows the supporting cast to shine and gives them layered roles.
In this season Reacher is well matched by a zealous FBI agent (played brilliantly by British actress Sonya Cassidy) who is operating 'off the book' trying to bring a gun runner to justice with an undercover sting operation. Reacher also wants his head on a stick for past 'indiscretions' Great TV.

Started the latest season of The White Lotus last night. I'm liking this one much more than the second series.

Daredevil: Born Again
A lot of hype accompanying this reboot of a fans favourite. Disney decided to bring it back after the previous series aired some 10 years ago when Netflix lost the rights to do any Marvel based stuff. The original series is considered to be one of the best comic book adaptions for its great characters and multi layered story lines. For me it's the villian that makes this interesting and again we have 'Kingpin' Wilson Fisk (played by the always brilliant Vincent D'Onofrio) going up against Charlie Cox's tortured vigilante Daredevil. It was always going to be tricky rebooting this after a long gap but I believe they have done a fine job with the afore mentioned layered story lines but still featuring those signature multi martial arts fight scenes as well as some extreme;y nasty gory stuff (but we love this don't we?). It's also great to have a villian who is capable of snapping a mans neck with his bare hands. Fisk is an imposing figure but so well realised you almost sympathise with him at times. Top notch and for me the only Marvel show that is any good.

Finished se03 of The Wheel of Time - the ending was great and obviously more to come (there are 15 books in the series - though as I've not read any of them, I've no idea where the TV show is compared to the books). One has to admire the effort in bringing the show to the screen. All the towns/villages/costumes/props are top notch.

Wolf Hall: The Mirror and the Light

Mesmerizing second half of the adaptation of Hilary Mantel's novel, sensitively rendered by Mark Rylance's Cromwell as he serves Damian Lewis's King Henry and an unsteady court at the brink of war and at odds with Rome.   Masterfully portraying the darkness and illness and machinations of 16th Century England and Henry VIII's capricious whims, this series, as well as the first, are among the finest things British television has achieved.

The Wheel of Time - Season 3. It's alright this show but there are so many names/place names to remember it does get a bit confusing for an old fart like me.

I,Jack Wright Season 1

I thought this would be a limited series but apparently there could be more to come. Written by Chris Lang (Unforgotten) this is a dark drama/comedy set around the well trodden subject of a will reading after the patriarch of a succesful family company dies in mysterious circumstances. Some of it is quite tragically funny especially John Simm's 'man child' character but also some nice turns from well known British actors such as Trevor Eve and Zoe Tapper. If you want something to binge in a day then this is ideal at 6 episodes.

Gangs Of London Season 3
Seems to have got even better as each season goes by. It seems every episode in in 'real time' and full of interesting set piece fight scenes. Some of it stretches credibility to the limits (ie a women strangling a bloke with the unbillical chord after giving birth) but it's never anything other than pure entertainment.

Surface Season 2
I finished this about a week ago but struggle to think of anything meaningful to say about it. Great idea to move the filming to the UK and it has everything you want from a slick 'high society' thriller starring familiar actors playing horrible self entitled people with way too much money trying to hide terrible secrets. Yes it is that cliched. Switch off brain escapist nonsense but I quite liked it.
