My entry into prog was 'Meddle' but I deliberately left that off my list as my view of it is very personal.

Depends much on the person's musical background and tastes, but if having to do entirely in general, something like (in chronological order):

King Crimson - ItCotCK
Yes - The Album
Jethro Tull - Aqualung
ELP - Trilogy
Genesis - SEbtP

I don't buy into the idea that one needs to be eased into prog via prog-lite. As mentioned earlier, it really depends on the person's taste in music prior to their exposure to prog. For me, that was hard rock / heavy metal and anything full-on and heavy. So, me easing into prog meant getting used to relatively light and somewhat folky music. When I was a fairly young teenager, I fell in love with "21st Century Schizoid Man" that was sometimes played on the radio station I listened to. It wasn't until a few years later that I discovered the album. The rest of the album did take a bit of getting used to. Weirdness in music doesn't really bother me, although it really does depend on the type of weirdness. For a long time, I only enjoyed The Residents on their own terms, and it was only fairly recently that I began to enjoy them as I would other music. I am more likely to be attracted to dissonant harmonies and strange soundscapes than chaotic rhythms (or bland consonance). I think I would have immediately fallen in love with "Pawn Hearts" regardless of when I first heard this album. And I don't think I'll ever learn to truly enjoy "Trout Mask Replica".

Five prog albums that worked for me quite early:

Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon
Supertramp - Crime of the Century
Hawkwind - Warrior on the Edge of Time
Jeff Beck - Blow by Blow
Emerson, Lake and Palmer - Brain Salad Surgery

No, I know how to behave in the restaurant now, I don't tear at the meat with my hands. If I've become a man of the world somehow, that's not necessarily to say I'm a worldly man.

Yes - The Yes Album

Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon
Genesis - A Trick of the Tail
Supertramp - Crime of the Century

A second fifth (and not doubling down on bands previously mentioned) would include...

King Crimson - In the Court of the Crimson King
Traffic - Low Spark of High Heeled Boys
Procol Harum - Live: In Concert with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra
Caravan - In the Land of Grey and Pink
Emerson, Lake & Palmer - Trilogy

That's about as perfect as I could make it , though I'd probably want to devote at least one album to newer decades, and my choice would be to replace ELP by Setna's Guérison (of 2013).

Hi,

Tough choice for me.

I remember the class we took in our senior year that was about music and painting, and we had Jensen's History of Art as one of the incredible texts and guides, but when it came to music, the teacher once suggested that it was hard to discuss music periods sometimes. Like a "period" was defined by one or two composers, and that was all we knew. And he said that most of us would never know or mention anyone else other than Beethoven and Tchaikovsky as "Romantic" ... because we probably didn't know anyone else.

The age of recording and the incredible ability to show us music that no one could ever conceive, or the age of publishing that was massive in the 1950's and 1960's ... made for a lot of ideas and discussions.

I tried to "list" me some choices, but ... for me, it felt like they were all from different times and places, and while they might fit a definition like we have for "progressive", some of them are a completely different time and place, and maybe not a good choice for a generic idea.

I probably would not try to suggest that it is this or that. I've fared better by allowing the new folks to find things on their own, which is by far the best way to find and learn about anything. Being told, school like, is fine, but almost all of us, ended up shaking a finger or two at our school and many of the folks in it ... well we did in the 60's that's for sure, and our "class" of jerks and idiots never even tried to create a 10 year this or that, or a 25 years this or that, to give you an idea of the incredible disconnect for that class at Madison's West High, and how the teachers and administration of it, worked on destroying so much, and not appreciating anything.

It's hard ... and there are a lot of things I want to mention ... and I probably would start with The Doors' Riders on the Storm and that album ... and then ... I think some Tarkus ... and I definitely would select KC's first. After that I go to Germany, France, Italy ... and at that point things kinda get ... spread out too much and difficult to discuss.

I have never met anyone, who ask me about any of the music I have on LP or CD ... and many family folks and their relations know it and never once asked me ... what is this like, or that? And the Space Pirate Radio folks were only wanting to know what some stuff was, because they were collectors (I'm not a collector!!!) of sorts!

I've tried a couple of times, to play things here and there for others, and got some off the wall comments ... like the one that was the one that gave a whole generation its artistic appreciation (so to speak!) ... when after 5 minutes of the Ozric Tentacles, Warren went ... "where's the lyrics?". Ten years later, his kids were on their little mp3's or Ipods, and what were they hearing ... boom boom boom boom boom ... and I made the mistake of asking what their music was saying ... and one kid said ... you wouldn't understand! I can hear Mike Rutherford's comments now in my head!

It's a dead end ... and remember that since 1974, along with Guy Guden, we were pushing a lot of "imports" and "foreign" music. But one thing that we did not believe, was the folks around the radio station saying that no one will ever hear that stuff ... because it wasn't a hit.

They were wrong! And "wong" (Firesign Theater)! And the stuff is well remembered and has a lovely caring group of folks like all of us here.

The more things change, the more they stay the same?
Music is not just for listening ... it is for LIVING ... you got to feel it to know what's it about! Not being told!

Unless someone is already a fan of avant garde or "weird" music I can't imagine recommending any avant prog or RIO to a newbie. Even if they are a younger person I would still start them out with the usual suspects (Yes, Crimson, Floyd, Genesis, etc.).

And good luck to you Greg! I hope you don't leave entirely and come back before too long. I guess at 99 years old it's finally time for a little break though right?

@ThyroidGlands
The classic LatAm bands such as La máquina de hacer pájaros or Invisible are so overlooked in Europe and the English-speaking world that hurts my soul. :'( People have no idea what they're missing out on.

Congratulations, Greg.
Ee hope you come back very soon. We’re going to miss you~

------

Obviously, it all depends on the person. In my case, these 5 albums are the ones I would recommend to a classmate with a relatively open mind:

Serú Girán – La Grasa de las Capitales
Peter Gabriel – Melt
Los Jaivas – Alturas de Macchu Picchu
La Máquina de Hacer Pájaros – Películas
King Crimson – In the Court of the Crimson King

It’s a list meant for an Argentine teenager who is probably already familiar with some of these artists. If I had to make a more general list, I’d lean toward classic albums (a very unoriginal list):

King Crimson – In the Court of the Crimson King
Genesis – Selling England by the Pound
Yes – Drama
Rush – Moving Pictures
Van der Graaf Generator – Godbluff
You don't know nothin'
You don't know nothin' about
You don't know nothin'
You don't know nothin' at all

I had a listen to vylet pony and I like this… but much of it sounded like excellent girl-pop.

This one grabbed me.

I think it'll always depend on the person. Music is so subjective.

Here are some that'll work when the right person comes along.
North Sea Radio Orchestra - I a Moon
Tarentel - From Bone to Satellite
Can - Monster Movie
öOoOoOoOoOo - Samen
Kate Bush - Hounds of Love

Hey, Greg! Not sure if I've caught you before your sabbatical, but I need to say that I always look forward to your polls and posts (even if my comments have shrunk to four lines or fewer) since you name-drop many artists others don't, like Glenn Branca and Art Zoyd. This place would definitely not be the same without you.

I’m not saying Trench and Veckatamist are Prog but they are close and something different. They both ARE art-rock and could be inroads to a re-vitalization of genre…. And there must be Many others like them I’m sure. Not exactly groundbreaking but very cool. They got a lot of college kids attention when first released.

The way I steer away from “metal” is also a handicap, I admit.

I’ve been meaning to give Vylet pony a listen. I noticed hi ratings and reviews . Yes there are up and comers . I felt that way about Grizzly Bears Vekatamist album (love it) . Mostly played by college radio. Good stuff doesn’t see the light of day. plus, my age is a handicap now I think. My inability to grasp certain styles of music due to ingrained expectations about what is… and what’s not. A lot of popular music songs about “muh dick” or “Dat Azz” are selling like hotcakes.   Sad.

Quote 4. The undeniable fact that much of what’s new in Prog sounds so
Much like what is old in Prog.

This isn't entirely true. The «new» progressive rock catalog that the older people gravitate towards is designed to sound deliberately old school, eg. The Flower Kings, Karmakanic, Nuova Era, Viima and so on. But there is also the, let's call it, "new new" progressive rock, that is more contemporary at the core. Acts such as Plini, Vylet Pony, glass beach etc.

Very much appreciated from the both of you, George and Paul. I have very much enjoyed my time at this site with you both. :) I have had an outpouring of well-wishes from people and it is so heart-warming. And no need to feel guilty at all, George. And I love the chance to discuss ideas with people, to have my ideas and perspectives challenged, to refine my own ideas in conversation, and to be exposed to other ways of looking at things. I was kindly offered a hug from one member and I wish I could offer one huge virtual hug for this forum that would embrace all willing to accept it. And perhaps if not willing, squeeze and smother one anyway like an all too avid anaconda with a huge crush on you (bad James Bond kind of pun there), but that sounds all too cruel. So a little wave or a gentle nod of the head might just do instead.

And I hope to come bouncing back like a bouncy boomerang ball, which I might now need to invent. I should be able to find the time now. :)

Thinking out loud… I wonder if there is such a thing as a prog Noob? Since the 70’s many of the albums mentioned have been played on typical FM radio. YES certainly got lots of airplay, Genesis was always on. ELP had a good roster of songs being played. Peter Gabriel, the who’s Tommy, Procol Harum had hits on air… Supertramp everywhere on Radio. So it’s been heard out there…. Maybe the question should be how we would introduce new prog (2000’s and up) to those who seemingly have no interest. And that’s a very hard thing to do considering a few factors…

1. The current popular music climate (today it’s Miley & Beyoncé)
2. The age averages of many new band members
3. The lack of marketing capabilities
4. The undeniable fact that much of what’s new in Prog sounds so
Much like what is old in Prog.

YES is great but very very old news. And the new material isn’t getting through to many.
I played King Crimson for my daughters and they just shook their heads.
Same with Porcupine Tree.   A 2:50 minute jerkoff pop song is all they have time for it seems.

Classical Music!!!?? No way on earth!!!

I remember my dad trying to sell me on Duane Eddy… “listen to that guitar” he said. Lol

I looked at my 5 picks and realized these are all 60 years old!!’ Lolol! Who am I trying to kid!
Sadly, It just may be over for good!

A good album that incorporates a prog vibe with today’s listening sensibilities is TRENCH by 21pilots… and the way the industry is moving they are even old news.

Agreed, you’ll be missed, try not to stay away forever🙂

I have not even lasted a day, yet, well I did manage a day at least before that (after resigning my position). I read a comment and felt I had to respond for the honour of my old art rock comrades. I am a loyal person. I did promise the wife I would try -- hopefully life will settle down a bit and deal with some issues. I really appreciate the kindness of both of your posts. It is a wonderful community that I still care about deeply. After being a forum member so long and putting so time into this site, it would be painfully abhorrently sad to think that no one would miss me at all. And of course I'd miss people, even people who likely would not miss me.

And happy to be attending my son's high school graduation event today, who is off for computer engineering in uni in September. I am so proud of him and wish I felt comfortable sharing his piano performances on youtube of his compositions publicly here. It's in large part due to him that I want to focus more on my family and generally de-stress (being an admin here could be very stressful for me and that stress was coming into my family life and family life stress has been following me here). To think that he had not even been conceived when I joined this site and is now off to uni. Working with this site has been a very significant piece of my life, and it has been enjoyable and rewarding in large part.
