I just learned that a guy I've known for some time was shot and killed last night. He's a cop, doing his job. He pulled over some known gang members to check 'em out. One was a parolee. As he was preparing to search the guy, a routine thing, no guns drawn, no "danger". The guy begins to run, turns and fires two rounds.

The neighbors who responded said he was still breathing. He was shot in the head. No protection there.

The shooter is still on the loose. Stupid F**ker.

I remembered Paco and his brush from last month. Gray, the cop, left behind a wife and three kids. Insane, wasteful, senseless.

IMAGINE, no violence, no war.  Sorry John, I can't.

I'm sorry to hear that, Danbo.

The police forces of the free world always have my respect -- what a tough job!

When I was teaching highschool, I once asked my class of "n'er-do-wells" what a world without police would be like. At first, their responses were very predictable: "Cool! Awesome! I could drive as fast as I wanted to, and steal what I wanted!" (etc.)

When I pushed them to really think it through, however, most soon conceded that no, they weren't the biggest and baddest guys out there, and that it would soon be hell on earth....

Again, sorry to hear the sad news. The officer's family, friends, and co-workers have my sympathies.

Try to see some of the good in the world, nonetheless....Ying Yang

Danbo, my sincere condolences.  Especially to the man's family.

Police officers are often unappreciated and even reviled at the same time they are cleaning up the physical and spiritual messes left behind by the evil and the uncaring.

I have several friends in law enforcement and I do worry about them in the world the way it is.  Unfortunately the world seems from my seat to be increasingly sliding into barbarism.

My father is a cop...sometimes it's not easy because you know that someday it could happen...we don't have such a high crime rate and not so many killed people but in the last year some cops were killed... two because they stopped a car that was to fast, the guy pulled out a gun and both cops were dead, he took them by surprise ... and so you begin to think about what could happen to your father...especially now in times of terrorism...

yes danbo, sorry to hear this, such news always make me worry about my father...and poses the question how people could cause distress and death , and most of all, WHY...

If liberty means anything at all, it means the right to tell people what they do not want to hear...

This topic reminds me of a song off Dave Gilmour's solo album "About Face". It is simply titled "Murder". It expresses his anger towards this pointless way for people to die. At one time he was confined to his house in England because someone had threatened his life. I think that this and the murder of John Lennon inspired this powerful song. Great album, by the way. Too bad it's not included in the archives because I would definitely review that one.

Why?

I can't express myself more articulately than this when I hear of something so senseless, a life taken for no reason, a family bereft, friends grieving.....

Danbo - I don't know if this guy was a close friend, or aquaintance, or colleague, and to an extent it doesn't matter when something like this hits so close to home - you have my sincere sympathies.

I too have great respect for the police forces of the free world.

I was in town a few weeks ago and some kids who id like to call "delinquents", swore at a fire engine as it passed, now i think thats just f***ing sad, the fire brigade and the police both do tough corageous jobs and deserve to  be paid more than they are.

Sometimes the people in this world really bring me down!

Long live progression.

I don't envy you doing what you do in the future nation of Aztlan.

You have my respect and my sympathy.

ClapRight on! A victory for the forces of light!Clap

(That sounds a bit silly, I know, but I mean it in all sincerity!)

BTW, Danbo, re the title of this thread, I know that you were dealing with shock and anger when you wrote it, but I can't agree that the death of a policeman in the line of duty (that duty being to "serve and protect" the rest of us from the bad guys) is "senseless." Your slain fellow officer died as a soldier in the age-old battle of civilization against the barbarians. Every now and then, a good guy falls (every police officer knows that, and deals with it each day), but another of the brave free men or women steps in to take his/her place. Your fellow officer died serving a very good and honorable cause -- a true hero. His death was anything but senseless.

Well done, good guys, and chin up, my friend! I'll be thinking about you, teaching my children to know right from wrong, and to respect the brave men and women who fight -- and sometimes die -- to keep us free.

Sincerely,

Peter

Smile BTW officer Danbo, you're a "fine figure of a man," if a trifle thin on top....

I hadn't planned on being there. Normally I wear civilian clothing. My present duty assignment is in background investigations for department employment. I was in uniform that day because we hired a new employee. My supervisor ordered me to attend. You have no clue how hard it is to stand so close to someone who hurt one of your own, and remain passive. Self control, self control, self control....

Samuel Adams in the frige, my friends. And some musical escapism, of course!!!

Admirable, Danbo, and yes, I do know somewhat of what you speak. Nuff said.

Re your assignment, WHEW!

Embarrassed There was me thinking all along that you were some kind of "prog policeman" originally sent to monitor us potentially terroristic weirdos, but who had since "gone native" from an over-exposure to Frippean solos and Jon Andersonic lyrics....Wacko

Nice to be mistaken!Wink

Glad to hear the man's off the streets Danbo.

Also glad I can now picture you (although being a prog-hole-policeman, I expected more of the Serpico look about you; grow those tresses, maaaaaaaaaaan!)
