Topic: Mainly aimed at young lot & progbassist Posted: March 29 2005 at 17:08 |
Wouldn't it be weird if us younger lot made bands that were prog and they got signed and made it into rock n roll and then made an album that got put on this site! Would you let the stardom get in the way of still visiting PA, but it would definetly be cool to talk to someone from one of the prog bands on this site,
Any chance of getting Master Fripp into the prog forum?

Well, I suppose if I could find some other progheads where I live, and we didn't suck and such, then yeah, I'd still come on the site, and no, Mr. Fripp said he wasn't a prog rock fan, remember?

I'm already trying. I'm perfectin' the bass, trying out for jazz band, and keeping both eyes out for anybody with the slightest interest in prog who plays an instrument. I've already found two guitarists, a bunch of keyboardists...but no drummer. None of these people really love prog, but they love music and hate pop and are extremely good. I figure my influence alone and seemingly random suggestions might put us in the right direction. The best prog is bands which didn't start off thinking "let's be prog." If you do that, you'll instantly become an inbred repetition. Look at the Mars Volta: they're a unique fusion, and they're interesting. All the original 70s prog bands were original too. And neo-prog is usually stale because it merely copies originality.
I suspect if I make a band, it'd most likely be a combo of Kansas, Yes, Pink Floyd, and perhaps Van Der Graaf Generator. And some Genesis, perhaps. Plus whatever else the other band members do, which would most likely give us some sort of punk or hard rock influence.
...if we can just find a time to practice...

Well, my current goal is to form a symphonic metal band, but I'll sneak some prog influence in there. Although then Philippe will proclaim that calling us prog is ridiculous...

Go for it!
edit: if it looks like I'm laughing at you starting a band, I'm not; I was just laughing at the last bit!

Does anybody else think it'd be workable to have a bit of this forum where people try and get other musicians to record parts? It'd only work well if someone had written a whole structured piece I suppose , but if anybody has and can't find a keyboardist, or a bass player, or a drummer, for example, there could be an advert section to get someone to record a part to the music?
If that's a rubbish idea, I apologise. It's far too late at night to have ideas .

It's not that hard - all you need to is record a sample or two of a nice lick you have, then post it here through yousendit.com. If everyone interested posted 2 samples, then these could be loaded by anyone into a reasonable sequencing package and prototypes could be made.
It would then be possible to jam with these prototypes and create bigger and better samples, of individual parts or even sections of pieces, then exchange these. This could go on until we have several completed works - or at least, several "WIP"s.
This could be the biggest prog band ever (in terms of numbers of band members!).
...just an idea

I would love to put out a prog album. Its a dream of mine, really. An unrealistic dream but hey it could happen...maybe. But yeah I'd definitely still frequent progarchives! This is the best website I have ever been too, so much prog...*drools*
