Topic: Peter Gabriel in Lima - A Progarchives exclusive!! Posted: March 19 2009 at 21:48 |
This afternoon, the publisher in charge of Peter Gabriel concert, called us and said that Peter was arriving at 4:30 PM, so I grabbed my press card and went to the airport (Of course with my copy of a PG CD)
At 4:30 PM the airplane from Caracas and Bogota arrived, but PG was not there, the publisher told us he was arriving at 6:00 PM on a charter flight.
Due to the huge amount of Press, nobody was allowed in, but when I was leaving a very told bald guy with mustaches came, of course was Tony Levin, he just smiled to the crowd, then David Rhoades, the drummer and Melanie also passed and at last Peter.
He was passing by but I have a strong voice and asked him a photo for Prog Archives, and he was glad to come near greeted me and accepted the photo:
He said he didn't expected so much people and was some sort of embarrassed.
After that I gave him the album a pen and told him please shake the tree, he laughed and kindly signed it.
But then all the people gathered around but he accepted to sign albums and posters for several minutes, even a copy of Turn it On Again that a friend had:
Honestly I didn't expected a guy so calmed and even shy for moments, never stopped thanking the people there and got a bit red when the crowd shouted his name.
Tomorrow night we'll have a great show.
Iván

You are quite a fine person, and I am very fond of you. But you are only quite a little fellow, in a wide world, after all.

Well, the concert was tonight.
Got to the Football stadium at 8:00 PM to talk with friends before the concert anf get a couple of beers but found an empty place, it was depressing and I felyt sorry for Peter who doesn't deserve this, the organization was terrible, and the worst of all, NO BEER!!!!!!!!!!!
Well, took a couple of ice cokes, a chorizo sandwich, and slowly the place started to look more or less full, for the time the disappointing Black Swam Effect played, almost 50% was full.
After this guys ended without any attention of the public, the lights came back, and surprise, the place was crowded, seems somebody was selling tickets at 50% of the price in the door, I felt really as an arsehole who paid 150 bucks for a ticket being sold in 60 bucks, but what was done, was done, and at least I'm one of the guys who helped to avoid the risk of a cancelled show and Peter played before a crowded audience.
Everything looked bad, the organization sucked, the sound was not so good, but when Peter entered to the stage, it was another thing, FANTASTIC.
The setlist was (From what i remember)
1. The Rhythm Of The Heat 2. On The Air 3. Intruder 4. Steam 5. Blood Of Eden 6. Games Without Frontiers 7. No Self Control 8. Mother Of Violence 9. Darkness 10.The tower that ate people 11. San Jacinto 12. Down To Earth 13. Secret World 14. Solsbury Hill 15. Sledgehammer 16. Signal To Noise
Encores
17. In Your Eyes 18. Red Rain 19. Father, & Son 20. Biko
Every song was played with extreme quality and great response from the audience who sung each and every one, but Signal to Noise, Solsbury Hills, Red Rain and Biko were simply spectacular, with a crowd totally surrounded to the great artist.
The biggest surprise of the night was Melanie, who has improved a lot since the Growing Up tour.
Sadly I had to take the photos with a cell phone camera (The Peruvian organization with total lack of respect, didn't accepted my credential. so i din't took the risk to take my camera, instead they gave ythe passes to people who aparently sold them at the door), the damn camera was set to tiny size.
Here are some poor phottos that don't reflect the excellent show:
Sorry for the poor photos, but if you're in any country that's being visited by Peter, don't loose the show.

Thanks for sharing Ivan!!
Just saw a interview from Peter in TV!
I really wanted to go, but it was this or Deep Purple, and well, it was a obvious decision.

Tony Levin talks about the concert with photos and films
I didn't saw it was so crowded, and the audience was fabulous.

Without question, the daddy ( or grand daddy ) frontman of all "prog" bands - and a wonderful solo artist too.
