Hey Robert, what else do you have by the "experimental" era of Miles? |
Not much...I know I have Bitches Brew and Sketches in Spain...
Is it sad that I can't give a straight answer to this question?
|
Oh, no problem Rob. You know that I simply like recommending music to people, so I first need to know what they have and what they like. If you don't mind, what do you think of Bitches Brew? (I know you're not fond of Sketches of Spain, just like me)
And btw, what did you think of the latest Velislav Ivanov? Is it the first album you listen by him?
|
I have not warmed up to Bitches Brew. It's a very complex album, so I am giving it lots of time.
The new VI album I just finished listening to- I liked some parts of it, but others bored me, to be honest.
|
Yeah, I agree with you with Bitches Brew, it has recently started to click on me, but still lots of spins yet till it finally sinks in I think.
I actually only wanted to know your opinion on VI latest, but because I don't have one one of my own yet. I've only listened to it once, and it striked me as better compositionally compared to their other two, but it didn't thrill me as his second album did.

I think this is my favourite album from 2010. The Land of No Groove is epic. Recently picked up thier s/t album. Very good but not quite to the level of Rise.

Bundles is on my listening short list.
Now for something completely different, but still with a hint of jazz influence.

Listening short list? What do you mean?
Also, don't you think 'Ballad of Joe Pimp' is very similar to 21st Century Schizoid Man?

My listening short list is a short list in my head that I keep for albums I want to listen to in the very near future, say 1 or 2 days. Anything beyond that I tend to forget as my short term memory is suffering as I get older.
"Joe Pimp" is almost too similar.
Also, a lot of similarities with Soft's Bundles and Nucleus' We'll Talk It About It Later.

Oh ok, I'm still young though, so I still got some spare memory
'Joe Pimp' may be simply a "parody" of it, not sure.
And yes, Soft Machine with the addition of Karl Jenkins started to sound a lot like Nucleus's first two albums, the riffs and grooves. But production-wise, they're very different, thus making it sufficient different so as to not consider rip-off.
Bundles is superb by the way, Allan Holdsworth rocks.
