I was just thinking of something.  You all know that song "Sweet Home Alabama", right?  Well, a big part of its legend is that it contains a rebuttal of sorts to Neil Young for his unflattering portrayal of southern men in "Southern Man".  Let us ponder this witty comeback:

Well I heard Mr Young sing about us
Well I heard old Neil put her down
Well I hope Neil Young will remember
A Southern Man don't need him around anyhow

Now, I respect Lynyrd Skynyrd, let's get that clear right off the bat.  I think for the most part their lyrics were intelligent, witty, and a lot less "rednecky" than most people think.  BUT, this verse has always bothered me.  Why is this a good comeback?  Wouldn't it have been just as effective if the last line read, "Well, your mama's ugly" ?

New Amazon Auto-ripper is kind of neat.  I just ordered a CD on it and got instant MP3s to listen to it now.  Also gave me access to all of my previous purchases, including CDs that I bought as gifts for others, so now I have downloaded copies of these albums too.  Granted, they are not my usual fare, but still cool to get "free" copies of them.

On the Uncle Meat CD reissue, what's on the excerpts from the movie? Like, movie dialogue, or music, or both, or something else?

The movie excerpts track on the Uncle Meat CD consists of a significant chunk of all the dialogue in the movie. The only real music in the movie is the "The Uncle Meat Variations", which is kind of the opening theme of the movie, and several excerpts from the enormously entertaining Royal Festival Hall concert from 1968 (which are NOT included in the Uncle Meat Film Excerpt clips on the CD, though they have been released elsewhere on the "Ahead of their Time" CD).   So that big 40 minute track is basically just movie dialogue without the visuals.

Most people I've talked to think it's a horrible waste of space on the CD, and actually brings the quality of the album down, seeing as it comes right in between sides 3 and 4 of the original album.   I think it's fine, though.  I listen to it occasionally as its own piece.  I also have the advantage of being familiar with the movie, though, so it makes more sense to me anyway.

I was about to say, "the movie hasn't been available for decades", and then realized it was probably on Youtube anyway.  Sure enough, it is!

It's been high on my wish list for Zappa releases, to have that come out on DVD someday.  To my knowledge, it still hasn't.  It wasn't even completed until the 80s, and it was available briefly as a VHS.  It's a fun movie.  Lots of absurd catch phrases and unorthodox fetishes, as per usual with the Zappa thing.

Once side 3 i over, I skip right to King Kong Itself. If it weren't for those awful penalty tracks, the whole album would fit on one CD.Those tracks should have been removed for the 2012 reissue, and it should have been the vinyl mix anyway.I don't know why they kept the RYKO version.

Also, new laptop = awesome!!!
