There's a few who've had Gregorian chants in metal. I can't think of any particularly striking examples offhand, although Wreck of the Hesperus (sp?) have put some Gregorian vocals in amongst doom metal, as I think a fair few doomers have. Then of course there's that tribute to Sabbath in Latin which if I remember correctly was Gregorian chanting. For more speedy metal I can't think of any names at the minute; if someone can come up with some more names it might remind me.

I pretty much agree with most of what's been said nere. I listen to mostly Prog Metal, perhaps 70%, and maybe 25% Prog Rock.

What nobody has mentioned is that Prog Metal breaks into a half dozen or so sub genres, like Power metal - Rhapsody, Symphonic Metal - Nightwish, Operatic Metal - Therion, Gothic Metal - Tristania, Death Metal - Craddle of Filth, Doom Metal - Devil Doll, Darkwave - Lacrimosa

There also is a stong Femme Goth movement, with the likes of Lacuna Coil, Within Temptation, Dreams of Sanity and especially in Poland with Artrosis, Delight, Closterkeller etc.

I would say that there is generally as much difference between each of these sub genres as there is between Progressive Rock and Metal.

Furthermore I see Progressive Metal being an offshoot of Progressive Rock rather than being a divergient style.

Once that makes 'em popular and they get female attention, they soften up their sounds and get commercial.

All true and excellent points. (But I would consider Cradle Of Filth black metal and I definitely don't consider Devil Doll doom or even metal...but now we're splitting hairs).

And don't forget about Tech-Metal: Cynic, Believer, Psychotic Waltz (early), Atheist, Sieges Even, Watchtower, Spastic Ink, Canvas Solaris, Spiral Architect, etc.

This is the first time I've heard of 'metal prog'. What is the difference?

Late Death albums, especially "The Sound of Perseverance" is an example of prog metal, and DT is metal prog - good guess?

Please give me a few examples for each category.

I would be interested in an explanation of this distinction as well.

I think you're on the right lines but the other way round. It's not a distinction I make, though.
