I have now moved away from playing metal / rock and now want to go into a sort of smoother lighter rock direction with my bass playing. Or something with my brother acoustic Because he's actually awesome at acoustic guitar singer / songwriter stuff.

Don't do light rock. Either do metal. Or go the whole other way and learn jazz. Light rock is not for real men.

I think jazz seems like a good idea. I could go for that.
By light rock I mean like not heavy heavy guitar always distorted. I mean rock where it can be heavy and stuff but not due to the type of effect put on the guitar.

No, I mean like, sort of how Rush used to be. Around Permanent Waves album. Yes it is hard rock-y but it's not exactly all overdriven now is it?
The guitar has chordy sort of reverby sound but the bass has a nice fat sound.
If that makes sense or maybe I'm going crazy from lack of sleep.

He has distorted but on Hemispheres and Permanent Waves, it's not all distorted stuff. And his distortion isn't overlydistortedtothepointofwhatnotesisheplayingicanthearthem.

I don't think anyone but stoner metal bands use that much distortion. Oh and kids that don't know about tone and are under the age of 16 use that much gain too regardless of genre.
