How is his solo work, anyhow?

This is all that I have heard from him. The best reference that I can give is that it reminds me somewhat of Steely Dan. I was on his website today and he has a new album coming out on September 6th.

pretty basic soulless fusion. I got rid of it !

*shakes head furiously*
I think that's one pretty soulful record, the melodies, the solos, absolutely gorgeous. For me it's the perfect mix between the latin jazz sensibilities of their first two albums with the jazz rock powder of Hymn of the Seventh Galaxy. |
a bit of objectivity : the guys play very well, they want to show us that they are virtuosi and that no one can beat them at their instrument, but this is unoriginal and uninspired jazz-rock, without soul, and that aged very badly.
If you want soulful music played by veterans of jazz-rock check out 'live from bahia' by Larry Coryell (1992).
Or during the golden-age of jazz-rock, 'mysterious traveller', by Weather Report, this album is way ahead of its time and far above other weather report albums, mainly because it is more "world music oriented" than your usual "jazz-rock". |
I disagree, you could apply that comment to 'Romantic Warrior', I really don't like that brand of jazz rock, too much show-off. 'Where Have I Known You Before' show-off? Couldn't disagree more, are you sure you remember well the album?
I love it, and I've listened to 'Mysterious Traveller', great album, love Joe's atmospheres, but it's very different kind of jazz fusion mainly because Return to Forever played Jazz Rock unlike Weather Report.
