What a wonderful world   It is an outdated system, but kids get free college and room and board to play a sport, and if they are good enough, turn that into a career in sports or coaching.  If they aren't good enough then they can get a free college degree and use that accordingly.  The college and room and board could be worth upwards of $40 to $50 k a year for an opportunity that they might not otherwise be able to afford.  There are many students who take full advantage of this and go on and use their educations for future careers.  There are many other student athletes, however, who put all of their chickens in the sports' basket, and when their college careers are done, all that they have are memories because they didn't take advantage of the education that was offered to them.  This, of course, is due to a combination of internal and external forces at work.
