Yeah, novelizations tend to frighten me. Somehow I've come across a novelization of the film adaptation of Chuck Dickens' Great Expectations.

As for Monk, I've heard good things about it (the tv series) but never had a chance to watch any of it.

I've been working my way through Lee Goldberg's Mr. Monk books(Goldberg also wrote for the tv series). They are interesting, complex, well written mystery novels.I don't usually read novelizations of television shows but these are really good books.

I'm as scared of a Joe Hill book as I am of a Beatles 2. I couldn't say I'm a King fan, but I admit he is maddeningly consistent. He's a guy who's really mastered his writing style, even if I don't care for most of the ideas he's had lately.

I've been reading a slew of short story collections.

Dreams of Terror and Death - H. P. Lovecraft (Entertaining stuff - I like The Cats of Ulthar the most at this point)
The Collected Fictions - Borges (Which gets exponentially better as it goes along. My favorite so far is Library of Babel)
Alone Against Tomorrow - Harlan Ellison (my favorite so far being I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream, which is also probably my single favorite short story from anybody)
I also got a copy of The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen vol. II a few days ago.

We raided a local thrift store's book shelves and made away with some interesting items.

-Three Far Side comic strip collections
-Two Heathcliff comic strip collections
-Moby Dick, Herman Melville
-The Cider House Rules, John Irving
-The World According to Garp, John Irving
-Tess of the D'Urbervilles, Thomas Hardy
-A collection of Shakespeare plays
-The Spy Who Loved Me, Ian Fleming
-bunches of others I've forgotten completely at this point

I got 'em all for a nickel each. We must have bought 60 or 70 random books from the place.

Being such a major fan of his father, I've avoided Hill previously in case it's either derivative or a major disappointment; the reviews would suggest otherwise though & a recommendation from a fellow King fan now makes me look forward to receiving the book even more.

Just waiting for delivery of 'Horns' by Joe Hill - never read anything by him yet, but has fairly good reviews...

I HIGHLY recommend anything by Joe Hill, especially Horns.

most recently I read these two:

both really fantastic, lots of things I never knew about and just a lot of interesting and inspiring information.

Now I'm about halfway done through this one and it's really good too

Short story by Argentine genius, Julio Cortazar.

Highly recommended for jazz fans and music critics. Also, literary fans will get a kick out of some of the topics and the narration.

Most of his stuff is.

My wife and I just finished Mockingjay this morning.

Without going into spoilers, I'll just say someone sounded like she was in a big damn hurry to wrap everything up.

I preferred No Country for Old Men even though the prose is written to the standard of John Grisham in comparison to Blood Meridian.

Finished this one last week:

Fantastic book. I think the Judge might have just turned into my favorite character in American literature.

I've begun reading No Country for Old Men even though I've seen the movie before; thank god I was half-asleep and hungover when I watched it at 4 AM with some friends so I don't remember much of it's story.

I'd never have the patience to read aloud for something so long( I can barely handle a five page alphabet book). For my 4 year old son I usually make up some quick story about spider man on the fly. We take turns telling each other stories, though.

This was worth it just for the entire prologue of King's next novel,Doctor Sleep, which is included at the end.For those who don't know,Doctor Sleep is the sequel to The Shining.Big smile

I finished A Prayer for Owen Meany...

For some reason or another (possibly because they're easy to read between calls), I've begun the Chronicles of Narnia series. That's my work reading, At home I'm going through Borges' Collected Fictions. I'm nearing the end of A Universal History of Iniquity which is interesting.
