One month ago I made a poll topic titled Six Live Tracks Recorded and Released in the 90s (clIck to see)
In that I compared: Fishmans "Long Season" (98.12.28 Otokotachi no wakare) (received one vote) Portishead "Sour Times" (Roseland NYC Live) (0 votes) Swans "Blood Promise" (Swans Are Dead) (0 votes) Porcupine Tree "The Sky Moves Sideways" (Coma Divine) (7 votes) Camel "Rose of Sharon" (Never Let Go) (3 votes) Rush "Roll the Bones" (Different Stages) (5 votes) And in that people were free to vote for as many tracks as they enjoyed, in this I ask people to limit to three maximum. I wanted to try again to see if the results are any different if I choose different tracks. Not only did I want the songs to be recorded and released in the 90s, but I wanted the songs to be first released in the 90s (so if it was off a pre-90s studio album then it should not count). That Camel album is not up in youtube in full for tracks (at least for me region), and I did not see nay others that were from it that were originally from the 90s on youtube, so instead I went with Dream Theater. I wanted all of these tracks to be on the shorter side. The first three are off favourite live albums of mine from the 90s, the Rush and Porcupine Tree are two of the top ranked live albums in the PA charts. The Dream Theater I chose due to the band's popularity and impact on the 90s. Note: I came up with this a while ago and wondered whether to post it. I adore that Fishmans album but I went with a track (I wanted one on the shorter side) where the lead singers falsetto is extreme which many would find off-putting. I so love it when Honzi comes in on violin, and well, I love the track and the whole 2 hour plus live it is off. Sadly, the lead singer and Honzi both died young (33 and 40). Feel free to vote for up to three that you like. Fishmans "In the Flight" (98.12.28 Otokotachi no wakare, recorded on 28 December 1998, released on 29 September 1999) Portishead "Mysterons" (Roseland NYC Live, album recorded 24 July 1997 - 3 July 1998, released 2 November 1998) Swans "I See Them All Lined Up" (Swans Are Dead, album recorded 29 August 1995 - 1997 and released 20 January 1998) Dream Theater "Caught in a Web" (Once in a Live Time, recorded 25 June 1998, released 26 October 1998) Porcupine Tree "Signify" (Coma Divine, recorded March 25-27, 1997, released October 1997) Rush "Test for Echo" (Different Stages - Live, track recorded, unsure, released 10 November 1998) On another note: I want to affirm that I do prefer listening to full albums generally, even if lives are sorts of compilations commonly, but I also like to hone in on specifics so one, ideally, is not just voting for favourite band but a specific piece and comparing it with others. This can make exposure easier. Feel free to mention what your choices would be from any of these albums, especially if under ten minutes youtube vids would be appreciated, and mention any other applicable 90s live tracks (first recorded, first released, and conceived in the 90s ideally). I don't expect much interest. |

^ Thanks, Joe. I really like it when people who vote do take the time to post.
My preferences are obvious, love the Fishmans, Swans and Portishead. I do like lives that are quite different from the studio albums. Today, my top three choices would be: 1. In the Flight 2. I See Them All Lined Up 3. Mysterons I adore In the Flight especially from about the four minute work (key changes that really get to me). Of the others, I do considerably prefer the Porcupine Tree offering in my earlier poll. Fishmans I only quite recently added to PA. It became a very popular band in some circles especially as it caught on in the web after the band's dissolution due to the death of its lead singer, guitarist and songwriter. I was working in Japan when Fishmans was at the top of its game, but I did not know it then. And it was based in Tokyo, whereas I was in the Osaka region. Maybe the best time of my life. I love various of its albums, but if I had to choose one, it would be this performance by Fishmans. I love the version of Long Season on it, and I really like the whole album. I think it's the top rated live album at Rate Your Music and it has become my favourite live album. It touches me deeply and resonates with me so very much. I do love the 90s for music. I wrote a five star review for it at PA, and honestly, it means even more to me now. Sadly, the lead singer did die three months after the performance. Yesterday I watched a video of DVD performance form 2011 of what i left of the original Fishmans plus many others contributing to it. I found it to be such a wonderful experience. A great tribute to the singer, and also I think it happened after the big Japan disaster. I would love to doa Fishmans appreciation thread at PA, but I know I would be so much in the minority here that it would probably feel like a lonely and sad topic. Maybe this as close as I feel to an act as, say, Doug does with Triumvirat even though I have not been into Fishmans for nearly so long. Just in case anyone is interested, here is the whole live album of that 2008 concert (for better sound quality, the album was synched with the video here methinks). EDIT: I meant 1998. And here is the 2011 concert footage: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LM3q6fBOK_c I especially love it from about the hour mark. And "Weather Report" off it I adore. Test For Echo "live" works really well. I think it starts off one of the three discs on Different Stages. Picked that and my favourite Signify from Porcupine Tree.

^ Thanks, John. I do think that Rush live version works well. As for Signify, I do prefer the choice in the earlier poll of the Sky Moves Sideways. EDIT: and thanks to verslibre.
And I see that Portishead's "Mysterons" was recongised by a mystery voter (who appropraite for Mysterons). It's a favourite of mine off that live album because I like how it differs from the studio album (although "Sour Times" I like even more off that album -- my favourite version of it). Here's hoping someone likes that Swans and Fishmans. I was a little surprised not to see Swans or Portishead get a vote in the last poll (I used to be better at predicting such things from the community I feel). I think both Blood Promise and Sour Times are awesome off those albums. The Swans in this poll is heavy and horrific. It makes Jon Anderson, for instance, by comparison seem light and tame. ;) Edited by Logan - 16 hours 13 minutes ago at 14:45 |
