Topic: 100% concept albums bands Posted: February 14 2006 at 10:20 |
There are lots of bands which make concept albums, and there have been a lot of threads about them on PA, but are there bands/artists which ONLY make concept albums? I only know two: The Alan Parsons Project and Ayreon.
Do you know any other 100% concept bands / artists?

Most of what Glass Hammer produces is concept in nature.
I like most of their output (The Middle Earth Album takes a little getting used to).

I wouldn't call Actual Fantasy a concept album - although it's close.
The only band that I can think of is Coheed & Cambria ... they only released concept albums, and they are all part of one continuing story.

Early Gong were a concept band too. And Hawkwind are a concept band also, with their music always up in SF/fantasy stuff. (Two studio albums and one live album, "Warrior on the Edge of Time", "The Chronicle of the Black Sword" and "Live Chronicles", were based on the books of fantasy author Michael Moorcock. And just remember the legendary "Space Ritual", for which I am too young to have witnessed it).

I love early Gong. A band like that takes you completely into an other world. They were unique, and very eclectic. I had the pleasure of seeing them live a few years ago. That was still great.
I never listened to Hawkwind. Perhaps I should . I never thought I would love "space"-bands, but Gong proved me wrong, though they were a league of their own. The same is true for Hawkwind, I suppose . At least, from what I heard about them...

Pain of Salvation? I couldn't be sure, though. Magma are the most obvious though I'd say.

they arent really emo at all...
His voice sucks, his music sucks...But that doesnt make it emo.
And whether they are emo or not, they still are a Concept Band

I can strangle a canary in a tin can and it would be really original, but that wouldn't save it from sounding like utter sh*t.

They are not a prog band, but King Diamond is a great example...
- Fatal Portrait (1986)
- Abigail (1987)
- Them (1988)
- Conspiracy (1989)
- The Eye (1990)
- Spider's Lullabye (1995)
- The Graveyard (1996)
- Voodoo (1998)
- House of God (2000)
- Abigail II: The Revenge (2002)
- The Puppet Master (2003)
That is a listing of every single one of King Diamond's solo studio albums, and they without exception, ALL concept albums.

As far as I know, although they didn't start out as a concept act, every studio album W.A.S.P. put out since 'Headless Children' has been a concept album. Could be wrong though..

Triumvirat:
- Mediterranean Tales
- Illusions on a Double Dimple: Interesting concept against the status quo and depression. The name of Double Dimple is referred to a drink, and how people drown their problems in alcohol.
- Spartacus: Obvious concept.
- Old Love Dies Hard
- Pompeii: Again absolutely obvious.
- A La Carte
- Russian Roullette (Not sure about this one)
- The Website Storuy (On work since 2001): Again conceptual.
Rick Wakeman: Maybe 100% (Not sure, but at least 90%) of his studio albums
- Six Wives of Henry the VIII
- Journey to the Centre of the Earth
- Myths and Legends of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table
- Liztomania
- No Earthly Connection: A parallel history based in the evolution of man and his musical soul.
- White Rock
- Criminal Record
- Rhapsodies
- 1984
- The Burning
- Cost of Living
- Beyond the Planets
- Crimes of Passion
- The Gospels
- The Rick Wakeman Family Album
- Zodiaque
- Time Machine
- Black Knight at the Court of Ferdinand IV
- King John and the Magna Carta (Soft Sword)
- 2000 AD Into the Future
- The Seven Wonders of the World
- Romance of the Victorian Age
- The New Gospels
- Return to the Centre of the Earth
- Stella Bianca A La Corte de Re Ferdinando
- The Natural World Trilogy
- White Rock II
- Preludes to a Century
- The Wizard and the Forest of all Dreams
- Songs of Middle Earth
Well, I got tired with 30

I dont know how that man makes as much music as he does, but yeah all of his are concept(ish) lol
even his newer albums still are. Out There is extremely good and all about an idea that music came from extraterrestrial sources (at least thats what my thoughts were)
Is it stretching too far to say that Jethro Tull only made concept albums? even though Anderson wouldnt admit that Aqualung was a concept album, its still arguable that it is. Maybe not thier earlier stuff, but after aqualung, almost all of thier albums were stories
