I can't remember the exact dates but my favourites are

Peter Gabriel - Earls Court about 1992. Included Sinead O'Connor guest appearance.

ELP - Colston Hall 1993 on the Black Moon tour. Sheer class.

IQ - Astoria about 2000 performing all of Subterannea and an impromptu encore of The Last Human Gateway

Yes - Hammersmith Odeon about 2000 again performing on the Symphonic tour. Played for just under 3 hours without a break!

Kansas - Shepherds Bush Empire about 2004. Played a great full on show loads of energy.

Colosseum - Swindon Art Centre about 2005. Previleged to see these legends (inc Chris Farlowe) crammed onto a tiny stage in my home town

Porcupine Tree - Astoria about 2006 included previews of new material (FOABP)

Mountain - Swindon Art Centre about 2006. These guys rock!

Keith Emerson Band - Astoria about 2007 inc 40 minute version of Tarkus!

Carl Palmer Band - Swindon Art Centre (at least 4 times!) . Carl is always great value.

Magma in Combs-la-Ville, March 2010, the third and the best concert I've seen them in. Most likely one of the best live bands ever. Mindblowing.
Jaga Jazzist, Paris, March 2010. Fantastic.
Tortoise, Paris, December 2009. Fantastic.
Gong, Paris, November 2009. Fantastic + that special feeling that you're lucky to watch real heroes while they're still at it.
GY!BE, Paris, January 2011. Definitely the loudest and most intense... experience ever. More like a contemporary arts performance than a music concert.
Any of the Kumm concert I've been to in Bucharest between 2007 and 2009.
My first byron concert in Bucharest, December 2007.

There are no better concerts than those we saw in our youth. Here are the ones I saw from ages twelve through eighteen. They don't do concerts like that anymore:

Alice Cooper, Ector County Colisuem, Odessa, TX - July, 1972 - "School's Out" tour
I bought a guitar because of this concert. I couldn't imagine seeing a better show for a first concert.

Deep Purple, Cobo Hall, Detroit, MI - June, 1973 (can't recall the tour name)
One of the loudest shows I've ever been to. My ears rang for a week.

Pink Floyd, Olympia Stadium, Detroit, MI - June, 1973 - "Dark Side of the Moon" tour
David Gilmour mentioned this concert at the July, 1994 show at the Pontiac Silverdome. He said that it was the last time they played DSotM in its entirety just before they played it again. Sweet!

Robin Trower, Masonic Auditorium, Detroit, MI - April, 1974 - "Bridge of Sighs" tour
I hardly remember this at all, but I was told I had a good time.

Uriah Heep, Manfred Mann and Aerosmith, Cobo Hall, Detroit, MI - July, 1974
Great show, and Aerosmith had just released "Get Your Wings". I was pretty impressed by a band I'd never heard.

Black Sabbath, Cobo Hall, Detroit, MI - August, 1975 - "Sabotage" tour
Unbelievable show. Ozzie was noticeably stoned, but then so were we.

Aerosmith, Ted Nugent, Foghat and The Outlaws, Pontiac Silverdome, Pontiac, MI - May, 1976
Foghat stole the show.

Jethro Tull, Masonic Auditorium, Detroit, MI - January 1977 - "Songs from the Wood" tour
A simply great event. I have loved Tull ever since.

Genesis, Masonic Auditorium, Detroit, MI, - February, 1977 - "Trick of the Tail" tour
Another superlative show. I think this was one of the first times Chester Thompson was on drums.

Pink Floyd, Cleveland Stadium, Cleveland, OH - June, 1977 - "In the Flesh" tour
I think Floyd sounded better in an arena venue, but the stadium show was excellent nonetheless.

Neil Young, Pine Knob Music Theatre, Clarkston, MI - September, 1978 "Rust Never Sleeps" tour
One of the best shows I've ever seen.

The Moody Blues, Olympia Stadium, Detroit, MI - November, 1978 - "Octave" tour
I don't know which show was better, this one or the 1993 concert with a full orchestra.

P.S. As a humorous aside, I had to call friends who went with me to these concerts to verify which tours we actually went and saw. Things were quite...ummm...hazy back in the 70s, and even moreso 35 years later trying to remember who the hell we saw and when we saw them.

I've seen a zillion shows the first two are the only ones that are considered classics in any sense. I've added a few other notables.

Guns n' Roses - Alpine Valley 1991
Metallica - Peoria Civic Center 1991
Pink Floyd - Soldier Field 1994
Dream Theater - The Vic Chicago 1994 (Awake tour)
Queensryche w/ Type O Negative 1995 (Promised Land Tour)

You are quite a fine person, and I am very fond of you. But you are only quite a little fellow, in a wide world, after all.

Great topic!  I think I'll start with the best concert ever, and the rest in more or less random order.

1977 Renaissance at Massey Hall.  Absolutely superb show, in every way possible.

1976  FM, at A-Space.  FM consisted of Nash the Slash and Cameron Hawkins, and they played Nash's score for the Louis Bunuel film Un Chien Andalou (while the movie ran).  It is the only soundtrack I can imagine for this movie.

1977 Taj Mahal, at the New Yorker.  An absolutely mesmerizing performance, especially considering that blues is not a genre I much care for.

1979 Robert Fripp at the Bathurst St. Theatre, First night of two nights of Frippertronics.  A much more interesting and dynamic performance than the second night, which was oddly flat.

1973  Three Dog Night and T. Rex, at Exhibition Stadium.  I include this because of, well, Marc Bolan and T. Rex.....

1973  ELP at Maple Leaf Gardens.  Brain Salad Surgery Tour.  My first exposure to prog in all its exces--er, glory.  Wink

1976  Van der Graaf Generator at Massey Hall.  First ever North American tour, these guys were just machines.  Hammill prowled the stage relentlessly, like he was looking for his last meal.

1981  King Crimson at the El Mocambo.  How much virtuosity can you pack into a small room?

early 1980s:  a bunch of shows at a small club in Toronto called The Edge.  The Two Garys brought in extraordinary acts:  Nico, Magazine, Fred Frith, Chris Spedding, the Police...and Kevin Coyne, who played the last show there.

Plenty of others, back in the day.....

Wow, Budgie in 1978!-i would have given my left you know what to have been at that one!
Couple of Budgie stories-went to college in Ottawa in the early 80s with someone who saw Budgie quite accidentally-he was bar hopping in Toronto, Canada one night-drunk as a skunk, and stumbled into The El Mocambo, and Budgie were playing!
Knew another guy who met a member of Budgie (do not know which one) at the Gasworks, a popular bar in Toronto, and struck up a conversation with someone who said "I am in a group called Budgie"

I haven't been able to go to as many shows as I'd like, but from those I have seen, I think the most memorable are (don't remember the dates right now):
- Rick Wakeman playing the whole 6 Wives of Henry the VIII with orchestra at Hampton Court Palace.
- Roger Waters. As a matter of fact, the last 3 tours he has done (they were all great, though the crowning concert was the last Wall concert... it may not have had such a good selection of songs as the other two concerts, but the show was mind-blowing).

I have also seen Dream Theater on their last two world tours, and it's really entertaining to watch them play.

I wonder who it was?
Well I watched them on the Hide Your Pussy tour, the line-up was Tony Bourge, Steve Williams, Burke Shelley and Myf Isaac on rhythm guitar. I have only watched Budgie 5 times (perhaps suprising given i'm in a Budgie tribute band)  and every time they have had a different guitarist! Tony Bourge, Rob Kendrick, "Big" John Thomas, Andy Hart and Simon Lees.
I have met Tony Bourge and original drummer Ray Phillips at the Boat Club in Nottingham UK but they were not in Budgie at the time. I also met Pete Boot because he came to watch one of our gigs.
I met Simon Lees because he played with my band on an encore at one of our gigs (his band Anubis was supporting us as we were playing at a Budgie fan club convention).

My mate saw Budgie with Pete Boot on drums in 1974 when he was 13, as you say, some people have all the luck!

Budgie sure brings back memories-in the early 1980s, when i was about the biggest fan of the band on the planet, i belonged to a fan club called "The Budgie Zoom Club", that was fronted by a fan by the name of Ashley Ryan. Were you a member, and if so, do you know whatever happened to Ashley Ryan?

No I was not a member it was probably before I got my first computer by the sound of it! Smile I am a member of Budgie's current fan club called Bandolier run by the fans for the fans, our guitarist is one of the mods, it can be found here:
http://uk.groups.yahoo.com/group/bandolier/
It's a small group but there's everything you wanted to know and more about Budgie is here.
PS: I had better warn you, if you are thinking of joining, people say exactly what they think! LOL

I'm not sure if all the dates and concert halls are 100 % right, but I deny every responsibility to that Wink

1. Pink Floyd - Momentary Lapse Of Reason tour - Rotterdam, Feyenoord stadium, 1988 (okay, no Waters, and with the help of session musicians etc. but what a great visual show and what great, powerful music!)

2. Yes - Magnification Tour with orchestra - Amsterdam, Heineken Music Hall, 2002 (I went to the Open Your Eyes tour which was incredibly disappointing; next time me and my friends didn't even go to Yes, even if they were playing a few blocks away from where I lived; but the Magnification tour with orchestra was absolutely amazing!!)

3. Camel - Dust And Dreams Tour - Utrecht, Tivoli, 1992 (best show from a group without orchestra or light show that I ever saw; best live band, with Mickey Simmonds on keys)

4. Pendragon - Kowtow Tour - Amsterdam, Paradiso, 1989 (me and my friends, we were new to Pendragon and didn't know yet how they looked like; at first we hated the show, but it turned out to be Jadis LOL ; Pendragon  came after Jadis and we loved the music, the show, the stage presence)

5. Barclay James Harvest - Welcome To The Show Tour - Utrecht, Vredenburg, 1991 (with just one front row of fans, and some fans sitting here and there; BJH never came back to Holland again LOL , but what a show!)

6. Prince - Sign Of The Times tour - Rotterdam, Ahoy, 1988 (Prince was at his peak in those years; great musicianship and a wonderful stage show)

7. IQ - Ever Tour - Utrecht, Vredenburg,1993 (Peter Nicholls returned to the band and for once he painted his face again like in the old days; it was great fun and the music was very good back then)

8. Tears For Fears - Songs From The Big Chair tour - Rotterdam, Ahoy, 1986 (I didn't know their music in those days: a friend invited me, but the show made me listen to their albums)

9. Vangelis (with Jon Anderson as guest) -  Rotterdam, on the river Maas, 1991, with a 'ballet' of boats (unforgettable, not the music itself, but I was living in a student dorm in Rotterdam next to the Maas, and with my friends we drank something at the dorm, and as we walked a few blocks towards the concert, the laser lights were projecting on the buildings)

10. Pendragon - Once Upon A Time In England tour - Utrecht, Vredenburg, 2000  (just a lot of great music)
