PFM was the first RPI band I heard, followed closely by Banco, Il Balleto di Bronzo, and Area, and several others.   This was all many years ago, and since then I assumed that most RPI groups followed in the general pattern of these groups.  I am fairly limited in my knowledge of RPI, so I was very surprised when, during the past year, I came across the strange avant-folk-electronic hybrid of Franco Battiato, and the dark early goth of Jacula.

So I'm figuring there's got to be more out there, stuff I never even dreamed existed.  Help me find some artists in the RPI genre who are really "out there" - I love the avant garde, and I love albums that take me by surprise.  How weird does it get?

I'll throw a few bands I like at you.  Some are dark, some are avant, some are just weird mixes

Opus Avantra - GREAT RPI
Adharma - modern mix
Akron - dark, Jacula vein
Alegri Leprotti - very cool avant edged
Antonius Rex- Jacula related
Architrave Independente - modern mix
Il Babua
Sorrenti - Aria, a must
Cervello - Melos.  f**king classic
Correani - modern, eclectic
Officina Meccanica
Rocky's Filj
Paese dei Balocchi - mellow, dreamy favorite of many
Paradiso Basso Prezzo - wild
Persimfans- strange theatrical
Three Monks - a classical organ eargasm
Zaum
Breznev Fun Club
Garamond
Gruppo Alternativo
Nichelodeon
Yugen
Stormy Six
Labirinto Specchi
Pholas Dactylus
Luciano Cilio - beautiful soundscape
Juri Camisasca

I'm sorry this is an incomplete list probably with many typos....I'm very tired and in a hurry....but couldn't resist a quick crack at a fun question!

Good luck, there's some great sh*t thereThumbs Up

My cup runneth over.  Much to investigate here!  I've heard Antonius Rex and maybe Stormy Six, but the others are all new to me.

Thanky thanks!  Smile

Sorry if this quote gets all scrambled up, it's the phone.
Just wanted to second this list, Jim did a great job.
The ones that I know of and think you would like are Pholas Dactylus, Cervello (you really need to get this one Steve. Sounds very much like an Italian version of Burnin Red Ivanhoe) and Rockys Filj. These are all albums that are out there, but in very charming ways.

Oh almost forgot about Art Fleury. They toured with Area back in the seventies before recording their debut in 80. I have this one, also reviewed it, and it is a complete mindf*ck. A combination of electronic RIO, field recordings, tape manipulations, radio segments, burial cortege styled organ and an abnormally strange way of gluing all these things together.
Gave it a three, but I am seriously considering a bump to 4. The word original doesn't even begin to describe this album

1. OSANNA "Palepoli": http://www.progarchives.com/album.asp?id=1030
Not my cup of tea, but essential.

2. PIERROT LUNAIRE "Gudrun": http://www.progarchives.com/album.asp?id=2907
Very good, better read a review on GEPR first: http://www.gepr.net/phfram.html.

Both are weird and unlistenable, especially the second. Hope you'll love them. LOL

Yep another truly unique album. Electronic RIO with some very theatrical female vocals. Gotta love the Italian take on Elvis' I can't help falling in love with you. Sounds so wonderfully deranged

A very nice list. Very, very nice. I know Rocky's Filj, Three Monks, Nichelodeon, Yugen, SS, and PD (thanks to Guldyboy)...all are top notch. I have deep love for Yugen...especially their debut. 6 star album in my book.

I look forward to investigating this list further.

Pierre, what's that album we spoke about a couple of months back, that was like a very rambling, avant-garde spoken word collage experimental piece? All I remember is, you said that you `like the train on the front cover', so you might be able to narrow it down from that description lol!
