Interestingly if you listen to GG&F, it's clear Fripp was a classical player by training and practice.   It was only when he began moving away from trad. Classical and into the freedom of rock and jazz that Crimson took off.

I think the OP was talking about any genre placements that one disagreed with - not just King Crimson. For example, I do not think that Ga'an has anything to do with zeuhl, and I think they are infinitely times more symphonic. Overall, a good idea for a thread.

Semmed clear to me that the intention was not just to talk about King Crimson, but that that was his example of a "Genre placement that nobody else can understand". From the title, I would expect pretty extreme examples where people might react in a "What the frig are you smokin' by thinking that?" kind of way.

As for Ga'an, I definitely hear a Zeuhl relation in the albums -- in the bass, rhythmically, in the repetition, in the ritualistic aspect, and in vocal qualities.

I would recommend this, for instance, to people who like Eskaton:

I prefer the self-titled to Black Equus by the way, and would say that Black Equus is more symphonic sounding. To me the band mixes Eskaton, Guapo, some Krautrock bands such as Popol Vuh, and ones like Eloy. To me Ga'an comes closest to Eclectic over the two albums I have as it has Zeuhl, Psych, Krautrock and Symph flavours, but that's not to say that I have a problem with the classification and would personally sooner see it in Zeuhl than in Symph (especially because of the self-titled).

As for PA classification that I don't think WTF? with placement and I don't think think people would say WTF? with me.

I put Vortex in the Zeuhl universe (especially for the self-titled) while it is placed in RIO/Avant, despite both I think making sense. Of course both categories overlap, but it's because of the stylistic similarities I make. Guapo, too, I put in the greater Zeuhl universe.

I would put Frank Zappa in Eclectic Prog. I might put Vangelis in Crossover Prog (many call for him to be moved from Prog Related to Electronic). And Kitaro I'd sooner see in Prog [Electronic] Related or even Crossover as to me he's just not as experimental as I would expect (and I do know his most apt albums). That's not to dismiss other people's opinions, different people have different ideas and make different associations.

Watching while most appreciating a sunset in the moment need not diminish all the glorious sunsets I have observed before. It can be much like that with music for me.
